This and the other recordings of this band I've found on TH-cam rank with the best band performances I've ever heard. Anyone who was a part of this band is to be commended for their pursuit of excellence and has earned a lifetime of pride for their accomplishments.
Pretty amazing stuff!! Nixon used to have some amazing players during the early 90's and lemme tell ya... we had some pretty amazing Region 14 band concerts!! . I remember playing in the top Region Band and All-State band with some of the Laredo Nixon musicians.
I was in then 8th grade when you all played this. I remember just being in awe that a sound like that could come from a band. for sure Nixon in its hay-day.
My first listen. I'll notate as it goes. You're on the clock: Slow. Down. There. Is. No. Fire. "Allegro" doesn't mean PRESTO. NICE Piccolo & trumpet in the soli. omg. it is ONE TEMPO throughout (until the Andante). Smith wrote it specifically that way (with the 8th note as a constant throughout the melodies/counters). BRAVO TROMBONES! 2:06 NOBODY gets that right! Nice bell tones, Horns/Bones Oh, Lord. Horn solo is good, but the tempo is not GRAVE. It's Andante. brb. I'm going to clean the kitchen. Hopefully, when I'm done, this section will have played out. (Nice octave, Solo Horn!) Tuba. Niiice. Euphonium. Should have taken a breath. Bass Clarinet/Bassoon: MORE. AIR. SUPPORT. Seriously? A Harp? In a HS Band? Come ON, Conductor. Go back to College and learn what a PHRASE is. It----doesn't----sound-----too. Good. (Excellent flute quality in the interlude!) And...here comes the "grand finale" to the slow section. I paused the video. Guess: it's going to run too fast and too loud. And too choppy, phrase-wise. (unpause) I was wrong. I admit. BLOW IT, HORNS! (This is effing awesome!!!!!!!) Absolutely PHENOMENAL! Best treatment since the USAF Band (1982) (Pitch, contra! Pitch!) Interlude..... Horns: FUCK, FUCK YES!!!!!!!! Fugue: terrific, terrific, terrific. I am digging this. (Who taught you people to play?!?!?) "Coda": BAM! (Horns) Somebody splatted but recovery? Wow. Wow. Third best recording I've EVER heard.

True! Some people that were part of this band and one of the directors were my band directors 30 years later!

I vividly remember playing this AMAZING piece with such a talented group of individuals. I played Bass Trombone that year as a freshman.
my brother played in this band. it was something.. i got to play the chimes one time in practice.
the trumpet part is an ass kicker. superb!
