    Dear Sally,
    Thank you. I am an older adult learning piano. I have been essentially without my teacher for the last six months because of the pandemic, except for What's App meetings on our cell phones. I am so happy that I have revisited your channel. You have a lesson for many of the pieces I worked on, and have been working on ( i. e, Bach Inventions 1, 4, 8, 13). I have always wanted to learn Fur Elise. I decided to learn it on my own without my teacher assigning it. I learned the notes through slow practice, but I didn't have the direction with regarding to counting as you present in this lesson - I only referred to what I have heard. This lesson has helped me so much to move to the next level. I also want to mention that I have learned to a level of theory that I now appreciate your analysis of each piece you teach. I am learning to connect the theory to the music and how composers create their music. Thank you, again.
    Sincerely,
    Cuba

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dear Cuba, thank you for your wonderful and thoughtful message! I deeply appreciate hearing that the videos have been such a help for you, especially during the last difficult 6 months of social isolation due to the pandemic. Regarding the counting of Für Elise, I have heard many people over the years attempting to play this piece by ear, and not really understanding how to count and play the rhythms. As you have found through your own careful study of the piece, Beethoven has precisely notated subtle variations in the rhythms which can only be played correctly with accurate counting. Thank you for taking the time to write in detail how this lesson has helped you. It is my privilege and pleasure to be your “on-line teacher.” I wish you much success and joy on your journey with the piano!

    Great lesson.
    Your the first person I've ever heard that explained WHY.
    I've heard lots of people play it. But they sound so wooden. This played correctly sounds awful. This played with feeling and passion makes it a different piece altogether. The passion is not accidental but applied teqnique resting on a bed of emotion. It's not painting by numbers but capturing the atmosphere and projecting it with it's rushes, fears, contemplations and Joys.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Hello J.J., thank you for your thought provoking and eloquent words. I think you address the essence in how to determine the character and subsequent interpretation of a piece. I always ask myself: What was the authentic impetus and emotions behind this musical idea, and how do I join my own unique life experiences and feelings with these? Yes, it is absolutely about "capturing the atmosphere and projecting it." Thank you for your insights, which I'm sure will be inspiring to many others! I'm glad you liked the lesson, and all best wishes to you.

    I have just found your videos they are breathtaking. I used to play piano but haven't played seriously for many years. Recently as I begin to teach my children the basics of music and watching them enjoy music so much it has made want to return to playing. After seeing your Amazing performance videos I was feeling much awe for your playing and very rusty for myself! And then I find the amazing teaching videos. Thank you for the time you Put Into these. This was one of my favourite pieces as a child and I am so happy to able to re discover. On and off I have had piano teachers - none of whom explain things so clearly and show so much passion and interest in teaching. I am looking for forward to seeing many more of your performance videos and teaching videos. You have helped me find my lost love of piano and music and Inspired me to put the time and effort into my own music and teaching my children. Thank you for sharing your gift.

How wonderful to hear that you are also teaching your children this beautiful art form. Many blessing to you and your family!

    One of my favorites, I am reading about Beethoven now, and learning about his life and troubles with depression and mania. I think he left things open so that his mood dictated the tempo, because it was so close to him. I have found that the pieces I have wrote allow for the piece to have different meanings depending on the tempo.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Daedalondae! Thank you for your interesting comment and for mentioning the importance of our choices regarding tempi. This one element makes such a big difference in the interpretation of a piece. I find this especially true when I do very slow practice. Another entire world opens up!

    Sally, thank you for this excellent, heartfelt lesson. Explaining, at the end, what was happening to Beethoven at the time he wrote the piece and his growing deafness helps players of Für Elise interpret the mood and hence express his genius at a deeper level. What a beautiful and inspiring soul he was! Your videos are marvelous. With much appreciation for offering them to the public.

    Thank you Sally. I really enjoyed this video. After watching it I can finally make progress on section b and c. I purchased the materials and they really help. I also bought 2 of the Grieg lyric pieces an I’m looking forward to starting on them. These charts are really helpful. Besides these 3 that I just got I’m sure I’ll find more. I just turned 71 last week and while I have been playing guitar since I was about 14 I’ve only played piano for a few years. I bought a nice Clavinova csp-170, which while it doesn’t quite sound like your Bosendofer it does work for me at home. I have really been making progress since the lock down and love your lessons.

It is just fantastic that you are learning piano now and have made great progress during this last long year of lockdown working from the videos and your Clavinova. I am also delighted to see the charts you purchased, and to hear that they are helping you with the B & C Sections. You can PM me at sallychristianmusic@gmail.com for more specific questions about the charts, practice tips, etc. I’m pulling for you via cyberspace. Enjoy the entire process!

    Beautiful class..thank you. I'm in the process of learning this master piece... The way I take it is the recurrent theme describes the object of his love, while the unique where it takes from the calm to the tempest are reflection of his feelings of sadness for not being loved back.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Roberto, thank you for your insightful and much appreciated words! I agree that the emotions that inspired this piece are about longing and unrequited love. Ich danke Gott für die einmalige Gabe, die er Ihnen gegeben hat und an der Sie uns - und das lediglich für ein freundliches Dankeschön! - Anteil haben lassen. Ja, liebe Sally: Dankeschön. Vielen, lieben, herzlichen Dank!
    Dear Sally, I am a male, 55 years old, and I sit in your piano lessons like a child listening to a wonderful fairy tale being told. I even forget to breathe! You are truly the Scheherazade among piano teachers. I thank God for the unique gift that he has given you and that you share with us only for a kind "thank you"! Yes, dear Sally: Thank you. Thank you very much!

      Dear Pfennigturm, thank you for your amazing and exquisite comment! You have taken my breath away with your kindness and thoughtfulness. Time stops for a moment as I reflect on just how much your words mean to me; they are a gift of joy! You are right, a “thank you” goes a long way. I say the same words back to you for your generosity. As a child, I listened to Scheherazade, and marveled then how our imaginations could alter the course of our lives. To one degree or another, we each have the power to contribute something wonderful to one another. Thank you, and many blessings and best wishes to you!

      Why is no one caring about th e little pauses in the ascendig part of the melody wich are not present in the descending part? In my opinion, the pauses give a "restless" touch to the ascendig melody, whereas the extended notes without the pauses make the descending melody more quiet. Beethoven always uses pauses with much thought!

    I appreciate the history you've given behind this. Makes one appreciate the origin of this great melody - especially the human emotion you're alluding to. Can't help but think of James 1:2 with your talk at the end. Thank you, Madam. This is exactly how I imagine that peace! Admitting that it is difficult to interpret anything published almost half a century after the composer died, I firmly believe that the scores are there for something. You mention a very important approach to such a piece, a rondo. When interpreting music based on dance patterns, especially those baroque dances, it is most helpful to learn the original dance character. Choreographies such as the HoTung by SoloPop or Trap and Dubstep remixes can be funny, but they are a great demonstration of how a different (perhaps wrong?) choreographic interpretation leads to a very threshed interpretation in piano playing. Imagining those lovely up-and-down hops of the Rond make the play interesting and entertaining.
