You guys are so thorough. Great job working on all these BMWs. I have a question for you. My son’s E39 M5 is having some electrical issue with his lock system not working. He’s tried all the programming on the key fob but with no luck. If you guys could do video on how to troubleshoot this issue, that would be great.
You mentioned changing a letter on the GM? I’ve converted my 840ci m62 to a manual 6 speed but it idle hunts for the auto and has ‘trans fail safe’ on the mid. I have an autologic box here so I can change the vehicle order number
Is this all the same for the 540? I’ve done the whole manual swap. Coding. And now I’m stuck on the wiring part. I just cannot get my car to turn over. Or even get the starter to kick. I think the car still thinks it’s in neutral - :/
I've an e39 520i wagon, m sport, manual. For you Americans it's got the 2.2l M54. 170bhp. E60 540i short shifter, vanos rebuild, billet disa valve, straight piped, michelin pilot sports and E46 M3 wheels (needed adapter spacers to fit e39 hub) and i spent the last month using a dish sponge to dye the entire interior BMW cinnamon. Bought it for €900 and she's my baby. When I'm rich I'll treat her to a 3 litre. Brilliant cars. Almost as fun as an E46 but way more comfortable. Perfect daily, perfect project. Just stay on top of everything like the water pump, vanos, radiator, stuff like that and she'll never let you down. This channel has been essential in owning an old BMW. Much love
I don't think you understand how much your videos helped, from replacing the csb, to replacing the rear main seal to the steps for the swap. Literally a lifesaver 🙌. Only thing I would change is to specify that the newer model clutch switch has only one connector on the back of the master cylinder rather than 2 separate blue and red sensors on metal brackets for the old version.
Let me say this. Happy Monday. @shoplifetv you sir are a Legend. I followed your instruction step by step along with a few other youtubers and i completed my swap 2 days ago. Shop Life's wiring is spot on and car started right up. I am not sure if my reverse lights work just yet as i haven't coded the vehicle. Once thing i would like to mention to others out there. is I have a 2000 528i and i wish this video showed how to connect ncs expert to the car. I have read that we need to connect via the round 20 pin connector under the hood to code the car as we can not code the car thru the obd port in the drivers foot well area. I had a few hiccups with how to route the hard oem clutch line, bleeding the clutch slave was a pain, and the mounting the transmission to the engine was a nightmare. But to anyone out there IT IS DO ABLE. I did it over the course of 5 days by my self with a jack and a mechanics tool set. It is not rocket science, follow this mans lesson, uses 50's Kid videos as well and get a general understanding of what you will be doing. Car absolutely drives fantastic now. Love it.

Great looking wagon. Love those m-parallel wheels! Great job bringing in beautiful Selena to help with the heavy lifting. Glad to see "Wonder Woman" wasn't too busy to chip in. Lol... This video can also be useful in mating a nonstock BMW transmission to one of these cars.
Thanks for taking the time to make this! I just bought a manual e39 sedan as a donor car to manual swap my wagon and this video is a game changer. You hit every relevant point and gave some amazingly detailed information to help everyone else out. Much love and keep up the great work!
@@ZaysSlow335 all of the drivetrain components are the same as chassis is the same. The front trim for the swap should swap with the sedan however the doors and backseats may be wagon specific. I ended up selling the sedan to fund my drift car but all the stuff to swap to manual should fit
Great video man, was nice to see the kid helping you out too, sometimes I feel like we're the last of our generation to not mind getting our hands dirty. And also Selena on hand to help out, you're a lucky man ;) Keep up the good work both of you!
My 528iT uses that same 3.46:1 final ratio, but I used the Getrag 250 gearbox, which has the same internal ratios as the ZF320 . It's proved to be a pain in the neck on the highway (frantic), and first gear is useless for anything short of pulling stumps. I should have used the 3.23:1 final; more in line with the touring nature of the car. Also, the pre-facelift clutch/brake reservoir is identical. The upper plastic is the one that needs to be cut. Love your content!
When doing work on those connectors, I bought a Wire Terminal Removal Tool. It's 60 pieces of assorted picks to help remove the pin inside the connector. $12 bux. A pick will work fine, but for the money, you'll have a lot of options for removing a pin without damaging it.
For anyone in the future that is going to do the swap, if your car won’t start it’s because of the clutch switch. Just bypass it by taking 12v from the brake switch and placing a wire to the blue and black cable to the EWS
Great video.I'm potentially buying a 523i estate (wagon) with an auto transmission. I'll probably be happy with it, as I won't be driving it much, but knowing the conversion can be done easily enough is a bonus. When I say easily enough, I mean when people like you do it! I couldn't imagine me doing it ever! LOL 😅
Great vid man! Family friend gave me an E39 530i for free and I’m strongly considering doing this. After manual swapping my 335i I’m convinced it’s the way to go
Great video! As always! For the future, it would be a great idea to use a steel clutch fork pivot pin from an 850i instead of brass. Brass is very weak and wears down quickly.
Did you follow this video to do the 5 speed swap I'm a little confused on the clutch switch wiring and think I got it wrong. I try to code it with ncs expert and it has a fault for no communication with the egs so won't let me finish coding
Last step on wireing is to bridge the two wires from the clutch (vi/w and br/bl) with the vi/ye wire from the brakeswitch? Is that right? Can Not see the wire, in the description there is no information about that step. Thanks for help!
Don’t have time to watch this tonight but I really hope this can help me out. I gotta 01 E39 that’s auto and I’m doing a turbo ls swap/ also converted it to manual but I don’t know anything about coding, DME and stuff like that
Great video, I manual swapped my 540i last year but forgot to sort the cruise control. What is needed to get that working? Or can you bypass the DME looking for the clutch switch?
Hey man, great video! I love all the BMW videos you give to us…so much helpful information!! I do have one question though, about the wiring. I’ve done the manual swap on a 2003 540i mSport and there is a blue with black stripe wire in pin 8 of the EWS from the factory. Does pin 4 of the clutch switch become spliced to this wire? Or does it replace it? If it replaces it, is there anything that needs to be done with that blue wire with the black stripe? After looking at the Bentley diagram for the EWS, I can see this wire links the EWS to the transmission range switch for the automatic, so I’m assuming it’s no longer needed, but the more clarity I can glean on this the better. Anyway, thank you for the videos and your thoughts and time, and I look forward to seeing what you’re doing next! Cheers- Coop
I don't have a "factory mode" profile, how do I create one? Remove the last character from the GM, SA, and VN fields, check - what does that mean? remove the last characters even if they are numbers? thank you very much for your answers
Thank you so much for this great video. I did this on my 535i e39 (european model) and I had no crank no start. This is due to the fact that European models don't use the clutch switch as a safety switch. I took power from the brake switch to the EWS to solve the problem, and it worked. Coded the car, everything works nice except for the cruise control which won't power on. Any clues? note that the reverse switch works, and the PDC as well as the car is coded as a manual, using NCS expert.
Thanks for the video! This is giving me the confidence to do the same swap to my wagon. Can you please share the name of the clutch switch wiring harness adapter you used for swap? Thanks!
