- The Beast is a wooden roller coaster located at Kings Island amusement park in Mason, Ohio. Designed and manufactured in-house at a cost of $3.2 million, the ride opened in 1979 as the tallest, fastest, and longest wooden roller coaster in the world. Decades later, The Beast is still the longest at 7,359 feet (2,243 m), spanning more than 35 acres (14 ha) and utilizing the surrounding terrain for many of its elements. Two lift hills contribute to the ride's duration of more than four minutes, which also ranks as one of the longest among roller coasters.
Following the 2021 season, approximately 2,000 feet (610 m) of track on The Beast was refurbished by The Gravity Group. Two of the ride's signature elements were reprofiled to provide a smoother ride. The first drop was increased from 45 to 53 degrees, affecting the transition from the first tunnel into the second drop, and the helix finale was modified to improve the distribution of force. 1,090 feet (330 m) was completely re-tracked, and the overall length of the ride was slightly increased by 2 feet (0.61 m) to 7,361 feet (2,244 m)

A thousand times!
It's much better at night or right after it rains when the tunnels are so full if mist you can't see where you're going. If you can catch one of the last rides of the day, they'll sometimes not use the brake run which lets you zip through the tunnels and curves much faster. The helix at the end is notoriously rough but one of the best features of the ride. It's dated now and overshadowed by much bigger and faster rides, but it's still a great ride and a rare example of a terrain hugging coaster built before the computer age.
I have rode The Beast so many times over the years I have lost count. But sadly I stop ridding it about 15yrs ago because it was getting so rough for me over the years! I personally like steel coasters much more! I am wanting to ride the beast again now that they made major repairs to help smooth it out. My husband & myself got to ride Son Of Beast when it still had the loop! I think that was during its first couple of weeks after it opened. We waited 4 1/5-5 hours in line to ride Son Of Beast! Back then you knew before you got to the park you would be spending more time in line than on the rides. It was just how it was, but you would always met all kinds of people literally from all over the world! Because Son Of Beast had been the longest & only wooden looping coast people really came from other countries to our little towns around Kings Island to ride the rides. Sometimes if we was lucky you got to met some of them & even decide to go ride other rides with them & maybe get something to drink & eat with them. No cell phones, no social media just talking to other people in line & after that day you may not ever think about them again or maybe for some reason the memory of them & that day over 35yrs ago & you wonder how their life has turned out? Even if you can't remember their names or where they was from, it is still a great memory to have & reminds me how much I miss how simple life was back then! I don't get to to to Kings Island much. I think last time I was a chaperone for our oldest daughters show choir to kings island 5 or 6 yrs ago. Our youngest who is 16yrs now its just like her momma when it comes to roller coasters! She will ride anything that is put in front of her it an amusement park, just like I did when I was her age! She is my roller coaster junky buddy & storm/tornado enthusiast hunky as well!
Many times for pov you should have gotten in the front seat that's where I always rode
yep. first year it came out--and plenty after that. Everything at KIngs Island that year was The Beast.
That helix tunnel is the best thing ever put on a rollercoaster. I rode this for the first time in 1981 at 7 yrs old in the pitch black. It's an experience I've never forgotten and passed on to my son. The beast will always be my favorite because of its lore. The greatest woodie ever made! 👍♥️
I also rode this at that same timeframe and I was 6. I rode racer and then Beast. I wasn’t quite tall enough, so the spiked my hair up to give me the extra inch and a half. The pads of the lap bar were huge then. I looked down the first drop and grabbed the bar while planting my feet forward to brace. It was amazing
This comment encompasses my complete thoughts exactly about the Beast. I wasn't quite as young but on my first night ride I was 14. No ride will ever top the helix tunnel, at night.
That part is better than any other ride in full at Kings Island.
I recently told a friend the same thing!
The goat of all wooden roller coasters the tunnels after the second lift hill are absolutely violent but i love it
The single greatest rollercoaster in American history.
The thing I was liked about this ride was the way that you went back through the woods. It’s like you were on an adventure or something.
I absolutely love this ride ! When she winds up and goes through those tunnels, man, that's a great feeling !
Considered one of the best and fastest roller coasters ever made!!!
The sight, sound and smell of this ride….along with the feel of it. It’s unmatched
It really is. Definitely a gotta be/had to be there kind of experience
When I was in high school in the late 80’s I had a seasons pass to Kings Island and my best friend worked at one of the food concessions. At that time parking at the park was free after 8pm and the park closed at 11. We would go there 5 nights a week during the summer and ride the Racers a couple times and then get as many rides as we could on the Beast before the park closed. The goal was always try to time the line to get the very front seats on the last ride of the night. Also when it would rain it seemed like the Beast would gain an extra 5-10 mph. One day we went and Metallica were at the park the day before a show in Cincy and I met Lars Ulrich in the Beast line.
Ive rode this over 30 times since the 80s. My absolute favorite. Especially at night.
It's the only ride I ever want to get on when I go to Kings Island. I'm older now so I like to just walk around, eat, drink and ride the Beast about 6 or 7 times and call it a day.
It’s been over 25 years since I rode The Beast…..but it’s still unmatched in my book…..especially if you ride it in the dark!
Been since 1984 for me and it's still the best
If you get on this bad boy at dusk in the Fall months, there is nothing better. Incredible views.
I would love too ride this at night and during the fall looks amazing I love the tunnels I think I rode this many many years ago can't remember tho
I grew up in the Dayton, OH area so we would go to Kings Island quiet often. In the mid 90s me and some high school friends went to Kings Island and it started raining and after about an hour it let up and they opened the rides back up but there was hardly anyone in the park. We ended up riding the Beast 10 times in a row, jumping off and running back around to get in the ride again. It was SO AWESOME. My neck was in shambles by the end of the day but it was totally worth it! We rode it late into the night too and let me tell you, riding it at night back then was SO AWESOME. You'd drop off into almost complete darkness, it was so cool. It's crazy to see how the ride still basically looks the same after all of these years! Love it!!
My all-time favorite coaster and the one I have rode the most.
Rode it back in "79" not long after it opened, I'm 68. Rode it about 10 years ago, would ride it again today if given the chance. 😎
I miss you old friend. It's been 35yrs since I saw you last. I rode you at least once a year the 1st 8yrs of your life and the last time was August 1989 on my honeymoon. Thank you Theme Park POV for the great memories from my childhood and the beginning of my adult life.
In the early 80's my family drove from Colorado to southern Indiana for a family reunion. My cousins decided to take me and my sister to Kings Island. At the time I was terrified of roller coasters and have never ridden one. Well that changed when they convinced me to ride The Beast. It was the best time ever and I've been a fan of coasters ever since. At the time Kings Island also had a coaster called The Racer. It was 2 coasters that raced each other. Once went forward and the other one went backwards. Of course I was on the one that went backwards. Once the ride ended the coaster on the other track was unloading and another coaster didn't stop in time and rear ended it. I think there were only minor injuries but it's a day that I'll never forget.
The Racer is still there, but both trains only go forward now. I've ridden it like 20 times already this summer. I miss the backwards train.
The Racer is a rough ride, especially backward.
Best woodie ever built!
BEST ROLLER COASTER ON THE PLANET I RODE IT OVER 75 TIMES IN MY LIFETIME ...EPIC
It's a classic that still thrills to this day!
This is the only ride that gives me a headache but I love it. 😂 It's normally the last ride I ride while there
I rode the Beast in 2014, prior to the Gravity Group retracking the ride. Still, it blew me away and now stands as my favorite wooden roller coaster.
I am coming for you, Beast! Next weekend
Have fun. Ride it at night if you get a chance.
@@marcusperry9481 that is the goal! I can hardly wait. I am traveling 2500 miles for The Beast, Racer, Mystic Timbers, and more! My next destination is Cedar Point. I was ready to face Top Thrill 2 but then it’s closed. I was afraid to ride it and that’s why I have to try it but I don’t know if I’m relieved or disappointed
The original Top Thrill was amazing. Just missed the new version by a week on my last trip. Beast at night is quite good. Also do Mystic Timbers at night.
@@marcusperry9481 At night is the #1 best choice. But right after a rain downpour is also a good time to ride. The track so super fast as it hydroplanes along.
Memories of being 16 with my 1st real girlfriend, riding at night about 10 PM in 1979. Sweaty palms and racing hearts...Young and not a care in the world. Felt like a million dollars.... Ah... the days of youth gone by....
Awesome video brings back memories from early 80a
I rode this before the seat dividers and seat belts were added. Also it only had the buzz bars when I rode it. Much better experience back then.
I have only visited this park once and was really impressed with both the speed and length of the ride. I was surprised that there was a second lift hill and it added to the excitement of the ride. I am glad to hear they have kept up on maintaining the coaster since it is so unique compared to most wooden coasters.
I remember going to KI in the early 70's shortly after it opened, and the primary coaster was The Racer. When The Beast opened it we were there. Back then the paved area to the left at the bottom of the first drop wasn't there. After dark you dropped off into a pitch-black hole except for a small lightbulb above the tunnel entrance. It is still one of my favorite wooden coasters and gives riders a nice long ride.
That second tunnel, I always think my arms are going to get ripped off.
Such a rough ride! Son of beast was also, as was the vortex! The beast is the only one that remains of the 3 roughest rides in the park.
Love the sound of the lift chain!
Same
It really does add something. Creaking and clanking like it might fail just in time for your ride!
Miss that sound on all the new technology rides
OMG . I can feel the bruises under my arms from that double helix just watching this! Brings back great memories...it's an awesome coaster❤
Great ride - particularly at night. Nothing beats the night ride. Traveled across the country for that experience a few years ago!
Who here remembers R.L. Stine’s The Beast book? It made this ride straight up LEGENDARY for me and I’ve never gotten to ride it but I really hope to get the chance.
The Beast from the East?
"P.D. what does that stand for?" "Pretty Dumb!!"
Truly one of the greatest roller coasters and a definitely must
So many memories. Standing in line checking out the hot girls during the long wait was almost as good as the ride. First time riding was 1979. Hundreds of rides since then. Still in my top 5 roller coaster rides ever. I freaking love THE BEAST.
The BEAST is truly Unmatched.
Awesome ride! Rode it yesterday and going back in a few minutes! A little rough, though! Love it, but you won't need to visit that chiropractor this week after riding this!
Best roller coaster period. I rode it 6 times in a row during a slow day at the park in 2000. I was in love.
I pray for your wellbeing lol. It definitely tales a toll but its well worth it
@@T15-v3d no way I could do it now
Yes! Grew up in Cincinnati and would ride this in the early 80s as a kid!
I got a season pass one year back in 1990 when I was 20 and safe to say The Beast was heavily involved every visit
No coaster can ever top this. It’s not the best first hill, not the fastest, not the most intense but it is the best roller coaster experience one have. Old school wooden coaster; incredibly long, completely hidden in a mature forest. When ridden at night with cool air hitting your face…well, it’s a bucket list item.
The night ride I got last summer was a spiritual experience.
Went down for Halloween haunt two nights ago and rode it at 10:30pm. First night ride. Fantastic!!
First time I rode the beast was June of 83 , I was 12 years old…Awesome!!
Growing up in Cincinnati, I love Kings Island especially riding the beast; but to write it at night is the best. There's a ghost that rides the ride.
Best ride ever!
Going here tomorrow for the first time!
I wanna ride this ride sooooo bad.
This looks like fun! The only drawback? The slow ascension, as the Chaindrive Mechanism drags the Cars up those two inclines. Otherwise, a cool ride, indeed!!!
It's done on purpose....for timing and spacing of the trains.
I got to ride this coaster when it was relatively new. I really enjoyed the length of the ride and was surprised when it had a second lift hill. It does look like it rides rougher now but still would give an impressive ride for any wooden roller coaster fan. I also liked how it followed the terrain and went through those tunnels.
Love the beast.
When it came out in the 90s it was the biggest baddest and fastest coaster on the planet!
This one was fun. I LOVE LOVE LOVE "Diamondback" that's my jam!!! Aloha~~ from Hawaii~~🍍🤙🤙
Great POV. Thanks for posting.
They say its five minutes but the first 2 minutes is the lift hill
Very nice video!
The best woody coaster!!!!
I’ve ridden all the coasters thru the years at cedar point and Cincinnati kings island and this first hill with wood coaster track has the most force on you even though it may not be going as fast it feels faster as the other coasters.
Best roller coaster ever made
1989 was the last year I was able to ride in the back seat. The vibration was terrible on my back, especially the turn/hill just before entering the final brake run.
Alas, 1999 was the last time I visited the park. My buddy and I had a two day pass. Since it was the end of the season they were offering leaving guests a free pass for the next day so we stayed a 3rd day, a Monday. Since the park was nearly empty we got to ride the backward racer side 17 times in a row with little to no wait time. Good thing we did since that no longer exists.
Being on the left side for the helix makes it seem like you’ll lose your head 😂. The pov Really shows how much you get beat up but it’s the best ride in the park
People are so disrespectful. Stop throwing sht off the ride. Like at conneaut lake people sticking gum to the wall. It's stupid and all it does is make the park look like sht.
Beast is like Godzilla. King of the monsters
I love the beast just my body can’t handle it anymore lol
Awesome!!!🎉
This was a great ride back in the day, but like so many other wooden dinosaurs, it is just painful and not fun to ride today. Look how violently the camera shakes throughout the ride. Diamondback is the current jem of King's Island, IMO. Higher, faster, smoother, more air, more fun, no ibuprofen needed afterwards lol
They need to RMC it
It's always interesting to hear people say "The Beast is too rough". That's why we have loved it for years! The Beast beats you to death, especially the double helix. I never felt that wooden coasters were supposed to be a smooth ride.
Best woodie
YES @ThemeParkPOV
Night time baby !!!
Factoring its age. This is still one of the greatest roller coasters on earth…
Looks pretty cool
Very cool ride
Have not been there in a long time.
Still the best.
It’s almost like you feel like your gna fall out of your seat on the dubble helixe and also it feels like the train is gna fall off the track
Its still a rough ride I see 😂❤
I've Never Been To Kingsland Before
It’s an old ride but I would say the Beast is still my favorite ride at KI. It won’t break your neck doing stunts but that first drop is killer since it was reworked and it’s still overall a fast and fun ride and it lasts awhile. The bar is far more acrobatic and smooth but it’s over like right after you start . They should have joined mystic timbers and the beast and included a drop to retake the record for tallest and fastest wooden coaster and World’s longest coaster. 😊
I wish they’d RMC it. That would be amazing
Sit as close to the front as possible. And tense up your glutes and raise your butt a little off the seat. This will help in the few rough patches.
Last time I went on this ride, was in 1983
What is with the hairbands? It's not even hairbands anymore, too. I've seen shoes and socks before (on other rides), multiple of those cash to credit cards, water bottles, and an American flag. Why?
use to love this but the older u get the more painful it is. last experience was probably my last lol
Looks fun
They should rebuild son of beast but do it correctly this time❤
What a weird coaster. In a good way. I do get a little bored of the out and back format with bunny airtime hills. This looks like a terrain coaster followed by a second hill for a massive enclosed helix, and i want to try it.
I'm looking at those Aminous clouds above
When riding at night and you are in the front seat, don't have your mouth open when you come out of that first tunnel and over that next hill. That dip had a massive mosquito swarm and I spent the rest of the ride spitting them out.
The Beast hasn’t held up well over the years
RMC should redo the tracks for a smoother ride IMO.
I never ride it but I really want too…
That lift hill was slow at first.
I thought KI didn't let you film on rides?
The voyage
The Beast is fast, and so is Amtrak. That was my reaction when I 1st rode this Amtrak Train Ride from Mason, Ohio to Mason, Ohio in 1983. I was still in the Marine Corps, stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA and at the time Colossus at Six Flags Magic Mountain was my #1 Wooden Rollercoaster when it was Absolutely Awesome!! The Screemy Meemy Version in National Lampoon's Vacation with the Single Buzzer Lap Bar PTC Trains. It was Pure Airtime Nirvana!! I don't know why there's even Upstop Wheels under the Beast Trains??? A bunch of Whoop-Tee-Do over this Boring Rollercoaster.
🙏sorry for your loss
OG Colossus is my ❤️🎢 as there was nothing like it. However Beast does deserve some props too. I will be riding it for the first next weekend on my trip to Kings Island. No it’s not like Colossus but it’s unique in itself because it’s a huge wooden terrain coaster. I hear the night rides are epic. Regardless, I appreciate every coaster I ride.
didnt son of beast try to take over and it was then demolished?
I Would Like to Try that at Night Once.
rough ass wheel seat
I never rode it
The Beast was so much better before they added all the trim brakes.
If it didn’t have the brake coming thru the shed it might could clear the second lift hill on its own if it didn’t come off the rails first! Have you ridden it since 2022? I feel the coaster is better now than it was even as how I remember it from the 80s.
Why such a creeping lift hill? Up in here? PWG
The other train has to clear the 2nd lift hill before the 1st one can speed up. If it went at full speed, it would stop at the top of the first lift hill each time. Rather it go slow then to have a setup on the first hill
@@millenniumbryanand also coasters need that intense build up to a drop. it sucks when its too fast
I’m in your room
