Wow - that was a very intense watch. We can't believe how scary it must have been in the moment. Hats off to all the crew of Esperance. Impressed with the way you all handled it. Hope you went for that pizza 🤔.
Well done to all of you, especially Kelly because although you were not there, holding it together while talking to the kids must have been so hard! Hugh you were amazing to actually film while trying to control the boat, and kids for doing what you were asked to do and looking after each other was fantastic. 😊. Ice creams on their way. Liz & Ian
Congratulations on coming through all that, intact and stronger. You will always remember that time when you needed your kids every bit as much as they need you. Thanks for sharing your honest feelings, without overdramatising. Other channels would have had some scary music, and a teary thumbnail at the very least!
I second many before have said here, huge congratulations Hugh, the way you kept 3 kids calm and reassured while trying to work out what the hell was going on was nothing short of magnificent. Definition of what a real man does in a crisis 👍💯👍 (now go fix the windlass!)
Not an event I would like to have faced with 3 littles aboard. They are a testament to you both. And Hugh- you were superb, am sending a big round of applause. Well done all of you.
We have just watched this while sitting with the owners of Kendra. Wow, that looked awful, but you did amazing. Earned a sub. Will have to go back and watch your other videos now. 😊
What an horrific experience for you Hugh, especially when your gorgeous wee family were on board. They did so well. We were holding our breath during the video, one of the scariest we've seen. In 30 years of sailing, we've never been through anything as rough at anchor. If you take into account the possible errors in your instruments it might mean that you did actually survive hurricane force winds , even though it wasn't actually a hurricane.😅
That's the new anchor? We can say it passed the test then 🙂 And the kids can tick of an important milestone. +60kn. Anyway a comment for the algorithm. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us armchair sailors.
OMG, well done Hugh. That was one of the worst video'd storms I've watched. You did a f*$king amazing job. You bough tears to my eyes when you reassured the kids and offered them chocolate, super super super well done xx
Terrifying experience. You did a perfect job with lifejackets and engine on. Kids were brilliant. We have had a very similar experience in 50+knts, with boats dragging around us and not being able to see past the bow in the dark and rain so really felt for you all. We spend 2-3 months a year sailing and watched every episode as enjoy your adventures but this one one had me on the edge. In my 40 years sailing these storms are extremely rare and you will have learnt so much. Best wishes and calm waters for the rest of your travels.
I believe this weather event was a Derecho. It might be interesting for the kids to look it up and read about it. Although the wind strength was close to a Hurricane, they are a whole other ball of wax.... A derecho passes by rather quickly, with the wind event along the front of an approaching thunderstorm. What is hard to get your mind around is that a Hurricane is hundreds of miles across, and can move very slowly therefor its wind goes on and on and on... 12 hours easily, 24 hours even of continuous wind above 60.
Thanks so much, for this. That term is a new one for me. The kids have been really interested in weather and storms this week! (I wonder why). I have just read this out to them. Thanks (Hugh)
Great video and stay safe
Fantastic - you all did what was right and credit for you for rearing 3 remarkable kids and teaching them well! 😀
Excellent introduction !
Well done again for dealing with something so scary and handling it well. I'm glad to see that the new anchor performed well!

Well done all of you. 💨⛵ You need some proper anchor chain hooks. Those swivel snap shackles aren't up to that job.

That looked horrendous! Well done for holding it together. We'll have a whip round for some new underwear for you.

Wow, Elaine told us that storm was pretty extreme, but that’s the first footage I’ve seen of it. Are you guys headed to Greece next season?
It was quite something! Yes hoping to get to Greece this year. Current stuck in Sicily the weather isn’t being kind
