As always, a wonderful and very interesting video. The opal is very pretty. I had an Ethiopian opal once that fell out of a pendant and it was in the windshield of a car during summer and when i finally founf it, either the impact or heat (or both) cracked it but weirdly it turned an ok colored opal into a rainbow disco ball that glimmered in the light. There were colors that werent even there before and had this lovely pastel rainbow glitter effect. Its actually one of my favorite pieces that sits safely in my china cabinets. Lol tfs!

As an established investor/cutter, I would have first used hands and then perhaps tools to break it up. Sometimes a saw cut across a cracked area can reveal how old the cracks are. If it is possible to cut a stable piece(s), I will do so and then sell the stones to understanding friends who are quite happy to get such beauty for little...and I get something back to defray the loss. I should mention however, that I have never been offered cracky opal by any reputable dealer. Like you, Murray has given me such stones over the years, but the key is that neither did he suggest that I fracture treat the stones, nor have I ever done so. But the Opticon has been readily available for decades. :)

You did a beautiful job fixing the cracks in that opal. So glad you didn't throw it away. Too much goes into finding and mining these precious stones. Cracked or not any gemstone is still a gemstone and if I knew how to fix it shoot I'd keep them for myself. May not be as valuable with fillers but hey I'm still wearing a genuine gemstone and to me that's saying a lot in a world full of fakes.

I bought many grams of cracked opal for examples, and downloaded pictures from auction houses, just to prove any mining district can have crazing problems from their areas. Cracked is not crazing unless it continues forever. I've heard some levels and districts had a real problem with crazing. Any opal can crack with physical stresses like heat or impact despite the hype some is impervious. Putting opal on a hot tin roof in the summer to eliminate the non gem grade from the gemstones kinda proves some opals were stable all along. I saw a documentary of a dealer walking in his yard watering all the rough daily because "Everybody knows you can't dry opal in a desert". I have not found anything yet to treat natural opal, it just fills the cracks like they do broken stones with opticon. You can see the separation of the filler from the opal with a loupe at the crack site. WE got a bunch of that jasper that year and Morgan hill also.

WOW! So beautiful, awesome video, so how do you come about finding that oven that sucks all the air out of the stones, lol but I really would like to know. I have some special little opals yellow, pink, orange, they're all from the USA but some have a few cracks. One guy told me to put Epoxy to stable the stones, and just buff it all over on the stones, and it will seal the cracks. I bought the stuff he recommend, it can take really high heat. I have a black opals but you can see through it if you hold it to the light. But it is really soft, and I really don't know if I should put the epoxy on it. Your the opal man that I would only listen too, because I think you really know what your talking about.

Amazing work! That fracture fill really made that opal look great!!!It's funny how they say diamonds,Ruby, sapphire and emeralds that are ok to use resin!!I didn't know that!! However I'm pretty darn sure that fracture filling/resin impregnation for Jadeite is frowned upon haha!! Lastly I think that this would be great for fixing a stone you already have, however I Would Not be buying a brand new fractured Any Stone!!!lol😬😁
