  • In today's video we head back to Florida to discuss without a doubt one of most impactful things to happen to the aquarium keeping hobby in the past two decades....GloFish!
These incredibly unique group of man made transgenic fishes have taken the pet trade in North America by storm. Bringing with them a whole new generation of potential hobbyists.
We start by heading behind the scenes at Segrest farms to their breeding facility with non other than Sandy Moore, The president of Segrest Farms. For an indepth look at their facilities and the parent breeding stock.
As well I sat down for the the story with the legendary Bill Shields, the former leads tropical breeder for 5D Tropicals.
Bill was responsible for the production breeding of all their egg scatterers and played a very key role into making GloFish available to the North American Pet Trade.
So let's get a beverage and sit back as we discuss the origins of GloFish from the people that were involved right from the get go.
Wether you like them or not GloFish are here to stay but regardless I think you may find their origin story fascinating.
    Thank you kindly for watching,
    Biggs

Chris I really appreciated this video. Over the past few months I have heard some of the story of how and why these fish came to be and learning about the company "Glo fish"
I know there's a lot of people that just absolutely look down on them, but with a video like this and more education about these fish...it dispels the myth of them being tattooed or injected... Fascinating stuff!!
Personally, I have two rescued female Glo bettas in my sorority and they are two of my favorite fish that I own.. Happy, healthy and thriving!!
I had no idea about all the research, restrictions and paper work that went into these "individual" fish!! Like you said love them or hate them they are here..so why not understand them a little better?
Super cool video I really enjoyed it!! Hope you have a blessed day my friends!! Thank you both for sharing the story of this fish😁👍🌿🐟🌿💚

From what I read, the idea of adding bioluminescent jellyfish DNA into animals, was actually thought up to make other genetic modification visible under the microscope or magnifying technology they used to look at cellular change. By making the cells glow, it made all sort of thing far more visible, so it was easier to record the effect of other genetic modifications

You know I am kinda neutral however I would love to challenge the legal "THEORY" that you can patent a living breathing animal because if you don't mind my saying.... "Datz sum BULLSHIT"!! Now the Actual PROCESS to create a GMO "glo fish" I'm completely on board with that being patented and if they don't want people to breed these they should of only put one sex into the market or create a sterile fish but since it's a living breathing animal I refuse to except the legal decision of someone who needs a good smack-up side the back of their head that this is patent protected just ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING

I disagree with glofish yet I have blood parrot fish so I have no right to dislike them

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes sadly the blood parrot story is much worse. From my background dissecting a blood parrot fish gives one a whole new view point of why we should leave the role of creation to Mother Nature or a higher power.
Glo fish however liked or hated as an aquarium fish their purpose for being developed had a noble purpose.

Genetically modified fish is illegal to keep, sell and import here. I couldn't be happier!
There was a pet store that had some for sale and they got raided, IIRC they got slapped with a fine that put them out of business. Some kid tried to sell some online that he had smuggled in... let's just say his parents were not very pleased.
Personally I am not even a fan of line bred fish, I want the wild variants. But to each their own. :)
