I have a 2023 Evowood 14 and love it. The can opener and awl are now the Victorinox components. The only Wenger tools are the scissors, cap lifter, and nail file. It's a great knife, and immensely comfortable in the hand with its contoured scales.
Hello from Ukraine. How did Evo 14 work out for you? I too wanted to buy one, but after watching Jon Gadget's review decided not to. I have a soft spot for 1-2 layer models, currently carry a Small Tinker. The problem of scissors / nail file was solved for me by buying a bunch of barely used SD Classics and putting them everywhere - drawer at home, backpack I carry, etc. One always goes in pocket everywhere I go. They also have the scale tools, so I'm free to carry even an Alox if I so choose.
A year later, but what do you think about the Victorinox Companion ? It feels like it would solve all your problem (Nail File, Scissors, Keeping blade clean for food prep). It is pricey because of special edition, but hopefully they will put a regular version in production.
Your last point is exactly the reason I haven't bought it yet - it's way too pricey, currently 😅 I'd love to get one, it really is the perfect combination of tools for me (in a three-layer SAK) but I don't need a special edition, can't justify paying a premium for a collector's item that I plan on using everyday.
As already highlighted by someone there is a more modern edition of the s14, that in addition to victorinox awl and can opener should also have the victorinox corkscrew which will accept the mini screwdriver. Alternative: if thickness is really not a factor look at the mountaineer, it's a 4 layers but you get a hell of a full size file, possibly even too aggressive for the nails, with a cleaning tip. And still also has the secondary small blade
My Evo 14 replaced my Climber as my EDC knife. When carrying the EVO 14 I don't need to carry a regular Classic/Executive 81/Ambassador for the nail cleaner + nail file. Also the Climbers hook has shown itself to be useless in over a decade of carrying it. The self locking flat screwdriver on the Evo 14 is a bonus.
Hi, it seems that the knife you got is some new old stock - It is the original Wenger construction before the Victorinox' influence. As noted in other comments, Victorinox continues making the Evolution line under its branding and it includes an amalgamation of the Wenger and Victorinox style of tools. The current Evolution 14 has the Victorinox-style can opener and is compatible with Victorinox tweezers and toothpick + the mini screwdriver will fit in the corkscrew etc. I have an old Wenger Ranger I bought in 2006 when it was already owned by Victorinox but it was still using the Wenger branding, it has the Wenger-style can opener, however the mini screwdriver fits into the corkscrew.
Thank you for the informative comment 🌷 Yes, other commenters pointed out that I got an old stock knife and the newer ones should be a Wenger/Victorinox hybrid. I'll try getting my hands on a new Evolution 14 and compare the two in a future video ❤️
I've actually done that several times with my Sportsman and it worked perfectly, but I kinda wanna enjoy the double-blade life with this Climber for the next couple of weeks 😊
You can try the victorinox executive 81, same tools like the classic, only bigger and without the screwdriver tip in the nail file... Or even better, the 74mm victorinox executive... The mini screwdriver old model (cilinder) fit in the Wenger corkscrew...
Thank you for the awesome suggestions ❤️ Unfortunately, both models lack a proper bottle cap lifter, which is a mandatory requirement for any multitool I want to carry daily 🙏🌷
Good review. I am trying to decide if I want to carry a 2 layer or 3 layer Vitorinox multi-tool. ✅ I think maybe 2 layer when I wear nice clothing, and 3 layer when I am wearing work clothing.
Shalom, excellent video. I think it would be somewhat difficult for me to use a wenger for edc because: 1) they are not manufactured anymore, they are collectibles and it will be difficult to get spare parts such as scales; 2) The can opener, although it works differently and better than the Victorinox one, loses the small screwdriver; 3) It is true that the wenger has a nail file, but it could be supplanted by a 58mm Victorinox on the key ring. In short, the wenger 14 is an excellent purchase, with a very interesting edged blade and generally of excellent quality, and a great choice of tools, today it is a collector's item to treasure. My EDC is a minichamp on my keychain (the most useful thing I ever had), and for my pocket, it can vary between spartan, compact, cadet, climber, explorer, pioneer x, or tinker deluxe, I took out the small tenker since it ceases to be manufactured.
Thank you for this wonderful comment, Ricardo, I like your analysis and insights, and I agree with you on the Evolution 14 having a great choice of tools - not so much on the build quality, unfortunately. I will upload an update video sharing my experience carrying this model for the past couple of weeks, but I can already tell you that it doesn't live up to my expectations, after I've being used to carrying my trusty Compact every day 😉
@Rosalind ROSSITER Yes, I have a minichamp alox. In honor of the truth, I have some repeated models, since they are the ones I use regularly; and those are along with the minichamp, explorer, outsider, spartan, swisschamp and Tinker small. I try to have a real and usable setup for the different scenarios or parts of my life. Greetings.
Shalom Raz & Happy Wednesday. I have a 3 of the Wenger model 14's & the Victorinox Delmont EvoGrip 14 version. Originally the Wenger model 14 was known as the Traveler, I have a Wenger Traveler with plain red scales, a Wenger Teton version which likewise has plain red scales but replaces the nail file with a small Clip point blade, I have the Wenger EvoSoft 14 which has black rubberized contoured scales (its a very rare model & only had a short production run) and I have the current model red/black contoured scaled EvoGrip 14 made by Victorinox. Actually I prefer the EvoGrip 17 models over the EvoGrip14, as the EG17 is the 85mm equivalent of the Huntsman (my favorite EDC) and besides having 2 of the current locking blade Victorinox S17 Delmonts in red/black & yellow/black scales, I have a unique original Wenger S17 model made in 2010 on a limited basis for the Swiss Patrouille des Glaciers bi-annual race with blue EvoGrips with black neoprene inserts. For EDC I still prefer the Huntsman ( especially with Plus scales ) but I also carry the Huntsman Lite, the Ranger, the Mountaineer, the Explorer & the Compact & the Wenger S17 and its rare that I carry any of the model 14 knives apart from the EvoSoft 14
I love this knife. It’s their perfect combination of tools. I just wish it got the upgraded nail file used in Victorinox’s newest knives. Also wish they weren’t going to discontinue the line.
You can use a litle round nedlefile carefully in the growe on the mini screwdriver, and it will fit wery good. After several tries you vil get a super fit. I did get it to fit on a Ruike with a corcscrew, no problem. Try the scissor, its not that bad.
HNY! Good video, thanks! You might try it out for a week to see how it goes...however, I have found that I sometimes have to carry more than one knife as not all the components I need are on one tool...they could possibly go in a case in your "daily" bag, while you carry your regular EDC in your pocket...& so the Wenger can stand in as your food prep/ eating utensil...the Wenger blade I like because it has a big "belly"...the corkscrew can undo knots & can carry tinder to start a fire with a fire starter in place of a toothpick...nice knives!
Thank you, Edgar! ❤️ For me, the whole point is to have a single "do it all" kinda knife in my pocket, I don't want to carry an additional backup knife in my daily bag, there's already a full size kit in there (that I will make a video about, shortly) 😉
Have you tried the small screwdriver on the new Victorinox Delémont models ? The problem with the Compact is that it has no awl (to open packages for the reason you said). I want to keep the side with the blade clean. I like the compact for work in a bag ''just in case'' (I use the pen very often). And the sportsman during week-ends in my pocket.
Try using the "combo-tool" (bottle cap lifter&can opener) on the Compact as a package opener! That's what I do, and it works great ❤️ Keeps the main blade sharp and clean 🤘
Just something I noticed your can opener on the new knife will work great to open packages!!! I have a similar type on my pocket tool and it works awesome. As well if you have an little kids around it is safe ish for them to use
Thanks buddy! ❤️ Others in this thread also suggested that I use the can opener to try and open up some packages, so I will do just that and update you guys in my next video on how it went and if it could actually be used as a package opener without compromises 🌷
@@Practical_EDC I made that comment early in the video. After watching the rest it is missing quite a bit that you use. I admire tou for trying to carry it, I know how frustrating it is when you carry one tool and realize you needed the other. Anyways great video as always!!! Cheers 🍻
Thank you for the kind words, buddy ❤️ I really an going to carry this new one for the upcoming week, just to make sure my predictions are correct and it can not fully replace my Compact as an EDC Knife 🙏 Of course I'll tell you guys all about my experiences with it after the week is over.
All of your concerns would go away if you got the victorinox version instead of the Wenger. There are also custom plus scales for victorinox evos online for the pin and pen.
I don't somewhat understand the point in having several poorly equipped low-end SAK toys and having to decide which one to carry to meet my demands, when I can have one excellent Swisschamp that fully covers all my needs and utterly solves any situation to allow for in my everyday life. The Swisschamp is still comfortable to carry and small enough to be my only EDC. Keeping any simpler SAK makes no sense to me.
Happy to hear you're comfortable carrying the Swiss Champ as a daily driver 🌷 I personally find the Champ way too large & heavy to carry daily in my pocket. My limit is four layers, anything beyond that goes in my backpack.
Bitten by the bug...lol...chasing the unicorn! Lol....me too BTW...lol... please do a video on where you purchase your knives in Israel! Use the can opener for packaging..
@@Practical_EDC hi Raz, I just noticed something on your video was bugging me... I couldn't figure it out until now... you got the vintage S14...that's the problem! That's why you have the old logo and old can opener! The latest version is called Victorinox Evolution S14 Red with Spring lock 85mm. It has the modern Victorinox opening layer (new bottle & can openers), Wenger scissors, nail file (instead of small blade), large locking blade. And on the backside you have the modern Victorinox sewing awl and you can choose between a corkscrew and mini flat driver or the Phillips Driver only. Scale tools are the tweezers and toothpick. You loose the pen and pin. It might be the perfect edc for you? I hope that helps! Let me know...yom tov!
Thanks, Ronnie! 🔥 I will talk about the differences in my conclusion video, but I honestly don't feel like the newer model (with the new style can opener) will preform much better than this vintage one I've been carrying daily since uploading this video 🙏❤️
Btw the Wenger scissor cut better, their “spring” keeps the scissor blades tight and together, the Victorianox scissor bladed can come apart somewhat depending on what you’re cutting.
I have several knives with Wenger and Victorinox scissors and I would say the Victorinox cut better, are easier to sharpen if they get blunt and don't have both sides of the scissors moving about like the Wenger scissors do.
Those Wenger-style serrated scissors are much inferior to the Victorinox plain-edge scissors. Try trimming your nails with the Wenger-style scissors and you'll probably never carry that knife again 😂😂😂😂😂
Thank you for watching the video all the way through, Henry! I appreciate it ❤️ I think I really will try to carry this Wenger for the week, see how it feels 🌷
Yes, Wenger is a very good knife, BUT its scissors are shitty and I don't like scales. They should add scissors to Cadet and Sportsman. Also, I have to say that blades on Wenger are better
