1914 (exactly a hundred years ago) marks the beginning of a series of changes that would profoundly impact Europe and the Middle East. Before 1914, the Muslim world still had a unified Caliphate with a sense of a global Ummah, a ray of hope and light at the end of the tunnel, all of which would change.

I loved this lecture. As an Orthodox Christian (and thus, a descendant of the Ottoman Empire at large), I can tell you that the English back stabbed us too. Greece got independence but England puts a Bavarian protestant on the throne. Romania gets independence, they give us a German Catholic, that is almost as bad as the French putting the Alawites in charge in Syria. We are all suffering because of England and France's meddling in the 1800s. It just took them 100 years to go from Eastern Europe to the Middle East. It's good to see someone flat out saying "France is at fault in Syria." My Ottoman history professor in college said the same thing. This was bad before ISIS even.

There are many who are aware that the Balfour Declaration was the worst thing to happen to the Middle East/Islam in the modern era.

Excellent. You made history very interesting. I want to add one thing. All this was happening because Muslims were uneducated and we ignored science, technology and research. As you pointed out, when Europe was inventing steam engine, automobiles, railways and machine guns what was Turkey and other Muslim countries doing? In 1493,Europeans discovered America, about 400 years before the WWI, and Turkey at the door step of Europe was sleeping. The secret to progress and power is education. Even today Muslims are not paying attention to Education and Technology.

Assalam alaikum. I just want to point out that the Turkish Ottoman Empire was not the backward, unindustrialised empire as is much written about in British accounts. The Ottomans did have industry - not to the same level as Germany or France - but they did have manufacturing and building sectors. Heavy machine and technology at the time was in its infancy for even the major European countries eg electrical products and motor vehicles manufacture had to go through long drawn development to find solutions. The Ottomans did have factories and workshops producing their own homegrown products and their number one partner was Germany for technologically advanced products, even to this day. The "sick man of Europe" title was a propaganda tool to malign and belittle them, and to give the impression the British were "saviours" of the Arabs, Bulgars, Greeks etc subjects of the Empire.

The ruling Ottoman Caliphs were decadent and backward . Attaturk was correct , certain wrong concepts discouraged progress , and innovation , and too much importance was placed in Islamic Sciences ''
Turkey owes its current advanced industrialization to Attaturk .

I totally disagree with your view on the Ottomans. Since 1900 and mainly after the peace treaty of Versailles a lot of negative writtings and accounts have been given to the Ottomans, this was to justify the war to the Arabs, Bulgars, Greeks and many other Ottoman subjects who were "liberated". The reality was that Ottoman rule brought peace, prosperity, autonomy and justice to the states they ruled. Travel around their former empire and you will see the beautiful and magnificent remnants of their rule. How could they be backward when they had a technological advanced ally in Germany.
I presume you are from Egypt so you would know the great Hijaz railway project and the Arab revolt. The Ottomans followed an Islamic free market economy, and they were good entrepreuners who went far and wide to embrace good quality products from the manufacturers in Europe. If they were backward you would not find beautiful stately public buildings, homes, roadworks, schools, hospitals, bridges and many public works. They had a good agriculture sector, mainly olive oil, fruits and nuts, grains and other mediteranean products spread across the whole empire. Did people starve in the empire, or go sick without hospitals and treatment, well no. If that would have been the case then there would have been a mass exodus to foreign countries like happened in Ireland during the potato famine. We would have read accounts of bread riots in the streets of Istanbul, Athens, Sophia and more. Instead we see the bazaars full of goods and everyone doing well and getting on well with eachother.

I am a Bangladeshi national and Muslim. The reason I am mentioning my nationality to clear I am a non Arab. So what your points here? Well I agree they should not hand the land to Zionist establishment. Even though Britain role might be unethical but what you expect them to do. They were doing politics to full fill their goal. When Muslim government conquered land that used to belong to someone else. Now you mention the sherif family was naive. But I think they were not politically educated, they couldn't read the situation and predict future shift because of lack of knowledge or awareness. So I am struggling to understand how correct the view to link it with religion. Thanks

Every single capital of Muslim world is in the hands of none Muslim, yet. we shall NOT blame Khalifa and its Khilafa.. lol Sunni logic express ! lol Khilafa wa corrupt from the very start Habibi.. When Omar the second Khalifa, appoint none Muslim cleric to work in his Khilafa, then what do you expect? ! what Happened to Uthman? and what happened to Khawarej against ALI.. were there any young Turk? its the believe and prospective of Sunni Islam that pave the way to this calamity and humiliation nothing else ! and still instead of thinking and rethinking ! all the Sunni go for is to blame this and that ! keep going !

I enjoy your lectures on interpretation of different topics of Islam but in history bringing to light events in chronological order isn’t benefiting the prospective of radical change. That’s the purpose of learning history: History will repeat and punish those who do not draw the right lessons: you said Mustafa Qamal hated Islam. How did you end up with this conclusion? From your lecture I learned that he fought against the all enemies without a compromise and lead his people to victory. On the other hand arab ‘muslim ‘ leaders always in bed with enemy; deceptions and backstabbing their own people. Calling ezan(edhan) in turkish not true. He saved the muslims in battlefield and in world stages. Stopped the genocide and ethnic cleansing of muslims in balkans and more . It’s very important to study his biography

As much as this presenter is having a heart burn over the allies attacking and capturing Bagdad, Damascus, and Jerusalem; as much as he never shed one tear drop over the Arab Muslims conquering these same cities, and beyond. The hubris and hypocricy of "good for us Muslims to conquer and abuse other nations, but others conquering us is something to cry about.
