  • Bought a Black Diamond 60 gallon compressor about a year and a half ago and the compressor started hammering.. In this video, I replace the bad factory compressor with one from Harbor Freight. Compressor prices are through the roof now so I was looking for the most economical way to get this thing going. Seems that no matter what brand you look at now days, the reviews are horrible.. Even some of the top brands are having issues it seems!

    Get rid of that PVC pipe. When not if it goes, it will fragment and can really injure someone. Run HEAT PEX, not the reg red for hot water, use the oxygen barrier heat PEX for baseboard heat. It has a higher pressure rating. Great stuff and simple to install with great end results

    should have used angle metal for compressor brace no weld

    A lot of these compressor types that have the inlet and outlet on the head have the ability to flip the head 180 degrees so you can move the outlet to the other side of the unit.

    Putting the compressor tank on rubber feet really helps with noise.

    PVC pipe should never be used for compressed air. Where it is exposed to UV light it will deteriorate over time and has been known to explode and seriously injure people. I would imagine the stuff buried underground would be OK since it does not get exposed to UV light.

    Yup! got a free compressor Black Max. 80gal. blew the piston out the side also. Just picked up an HF. 5hp compressor pump they are not going to carry anymore... and will be getting a Vevor 5hp motor spending under $200 total unless I need valves and such. The original setup had a 5hp motor on it.. all original but it says, 6.5 compressor on the tank.. go figure.
    great job, thanks for the detales.

    Saylor-Beall are the last company making their pump heads in USA but they're not cheap. Keep an eye out for used ones as they sell the rebuild parts. They're light years better than consumer crap. I hunted for years before scoring a two at auction. Look for "receiver tanks" used at auctions etc. Most people don't know they exist outside of industry. More air storage volume is a wonderful thing.

    • @Comm0ut
      @Comm0ut ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mrmotofy Their patents would have expired decades ago but the quality of copies is questionable so I'd not buy them new.
      I'll use consumer crap compressors too but I get them free or cheap because they're broken then fix them for pocket change. I scatter those around my garages and shop buildings for air everywhere. I won't buy anything questionable new because the best bang for my buck is used industrial equipment which is easy to work one (often much easier than the consumer junk).
      BTW I got two free compressors from my recycle center where the guy looks out for me because I personally hand him my good scrap aluminum instead of putting it in the company bins. It's perfectly legal since its my property and many recycle center workers collect scrap at home too. Treat people right and it pays off.

    Take the head off the compressor and turn it 180 , the bolt the head back on . Then you have a straight shot from the air output to the tank .

    What hp is the motor. I have a Dewalt and its garbage. It had a 3hp motor and it had trouble running. Eventually it burned out they sent a new motor and it kept doing the same thing. I put a new pump thinking it was the pump locking up and nothing keeps having the same problem. I've replaced the check valve and the on/off switch with no luck. I've replaced everything except the paint on the tank

    • @williamallen7836
      @williamallen7836 ปีที่แล้ว

      HF normally has 2 pumps on the sales floor. One needs a 3HP motor (the one in this video), and the other needs a 5HP. So a 3 HP motor will work just fine. Just make sure to follow the instructions to determine the correct size pulley so you don't spin it over it's rated RPM. It's an easy calculation, and tractor supply has an assortment of pulley sizes for a good prices.

    Would you know if this kind of compressor could be converted to run off a gas motor instead of the electric motor that comes installed with it?

    • @TimMcArdle
      @TimMcArdle  ปีที่แล้ว

      I couldn't see why not. You would probably just need to make sure you have it spinning the right rpm. Make sure you have a regulator as well if some sort.

    Dude that copper tube is rated for 1000 psi, that's the least of your issues. Your PVC Schedule 40 3/4" is only rated at 480 psi, but the older it gets the more brittle it will become.

    Interesting. From my understanding, Black Diamond is actually made by Sanborn who is a huge manufacturer of air compressors and actually make them for a whole bunch of brand name companies who slap their name on them. In fact Black Max was made/owned by Sanborn but they stopped the black max line when Sanborn was bought by Coleman. I also thought black diamond has a 2 year warranty.
