" _But this sad story shows that the townspeople were solidly aligned with the Natsi's goals and efforts_ " What a ridiculous statement. All it shows is that the townspeople were very distressed at the loss of their homes and the killing of family and friends, and that some acted without restraint and were not stopped either by other townspeople or the prisoners' guards. The killing of the US airmen had absolutely nothing to do with the Nazis' goals.
@@mcbrians.8508 ich komme aus Russland :) I am also of German descent. My ancestors fought against Nazism, militaristic Japan and the lies that Germany was involved in after 2WW by former Soviet allies.
Australia was involved in the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944: Air: About 2,800 Australian airmen from the Royal Australian Air Force and the Royal Air Force provided aerial support. Sea: Around 500 sailors served on Royal Navy vessels. Ground: A small number of Australian soldiers served with the British Army. In total, about 3,300 Australians participated in the D-Day landings.
At that stage of the war the only male non-military in Germany were old, sick weak. They were just as traumatised as everyone else, but they had no discipline to keep a lid on it as was supposed to apply to military personnel of all sides. The German guards for prisioners in rear areas were not first rate soldiers and often were conquered reluctant conscriptee's from Germany's extensive occupied territories.
Germany's first significant defeat was in the waters around Norway, even if sealion had taken place, they wouldn't have had the surface fleet to protect it. Not because of the RAF, but because of the RN. And D-Day only happened thanks to winning the Battle of the Atlantic.
What kind of nonsense is this? Kriegsmarine was stronger not by surface, but by the submarine fleet. And in conjunction with Luftwaffe. And mainly for the destruction of ice convoys. 80% of the financing was taken by Heer (Wehrmacht). How much fuel does a battleship eat? And the submarine? And the planes? And the main steel fist is tanks and logistics. And the fuel is Ploiesti and the Caucasus. Was Hitler supposed to sail there on a submarine?
Britain escaped from France along its favorite route since the Middle Ages - from Dunkirk, locked itself on the island and sat there, periodically spitting bombing. And in 1944, when everything was already clear, and the former allies of Germany betrayed Hitler so as not to be in the dock with him, the United States came for a piece of pie so that Stalin would not take everything. .

I feel like the German citizen were unwise to randomly assume that the American "Thank you ma'am" crew was the bombers.. like, maybe they should ask first...? But, in the other hand, it also makes sense why they hated them which caused that thinking\assumption . like, of course you don't want to see your house burning and getting bombed to rubble, and you also don't want your family\friends to be injured\killed.. but, even that is not an excuse of hurting the crew and killing 6 them. The German guards also have to stop it, but as they said, the guards made NO attempt to stop it.
I wouldn't have assumed that the townspeople did assume that the American crew were responsible for the bombing. They did know that Allied airmen were responsible, and that the US crew were Allied airmen. I think that would have been enough.

This story proves that not all of the German civilians were innocent or less barbaric than their Natsi heroes. Many claimed that they were unaware of the extreme nature of Heetlur's evil regime. One would like to think that the Natsis were not representative of the German people. Hopefully, that is true. But it takes a certain mindset to cause a man or woman to literally repeatedly bash in the head of a wounded man without any thought of mercy or investigation as to his guilt. Naturally, this was war and this town had suffered greatly at the hands of the Allies. But this sad story shows that the townspeople were solidly aligned with the Natsi's goals and efforts.
That was the result of total control by a ruthless minority.
See how quick they woke up when pluralism was restored.

" _But this sad story shows that the townspeople were solidly aligned with the Natsi's goals and efforts_ "
What a ridiculous statement. All it shows is that the townspeople were very distressed at the loss of their homes and the killing of family and friends, and that some acted without restraint and were not stopped either by other townspeople or the prisoners' guards. The killing of the US airmen had absolutely nothing to do with the Nazis' goals.

SMALL MAN SYNDROME???

So sahen die Amerikaner die Deutschen nicht als Menschen.
