I helped my husband do this and we put toilet paper rolls in the man cave desk drawer and put nicely folded cords inside each roll with the plug ends up so we can see what it is.

Definitely give the kids a camera! Especially if they have video mode. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVE watching old videos my kids made. Seeing the world through their eyes is truly a gift!! My kids are now 22, 20, 17 and 14 but I cherish those old videos of them taping themselves dancing or voice overs of their stuffed animals!

Just a tip! ☀️ One way I label my cords is to write the Brand/ What it’s for on a thin strip of paper
& wrap it snug around the wire with CLEAR tape so I can SEE it AND the label doesn’t get lost. That way label & cord stay together :)

I do something similar but I use a strip of paper that I write on both sides and then cover with clear tape. I need big letters so I can see it better. ;) I label the ones in use too near the plug so that I don't unplug the wrong thing. Learned that from experience. ;)

I’ve been using the container concept to limit how many cords I keep on hand, but it does need an annual sorting through. One strategy that has helped me with cords and in other areas, if I don’t know what a cord is for, but don’t feel ready to get rid of it yet, I’ll put it in a clear bag and write with a sharpie “don’t know” and the month, date, and year. The next year when I sort through cords, I feel much easier about letting it go.

Great work, Steph! In Australia we have ‘mobile muster’ which is an easily assessable recycling program for mobile phones ( that’s what we call cell phones in Aus😃). Many local supermarkets have a big green box at their entrance that takes old mobile phones, cords, accessories, modems, fit bits etc as well as old used batteries! When I get new tech item (like a camera) I throw away the box and put everything in a ziplock back (manual, cords, misc) then label it at the top. All the zip lock bags then go in a decorative file box I got from Ikea, that way everything stays in one place and can hide in plain sight on my bookshelf.

This one will be a tough one - not for me, but for my husband who has cords and wires from stereo equipment from his high school dj days - he is 58 years old now!!!

I did this the other day! I didn’t get rid of many, because my husband feels the need to keep them all but I organized them and folded all neatly so they now don’t overflow and aren’t all tangled! 😊

Your facial expressions every time you picked up a cord had me in stitches! Never was there a better representation of “what is this for?” Lol

My spouse has had huge bins of various cords. He has gone through them & consolidated into one bin labeled electronics. It's amazing how many cards we still have but at least they're organized & we know what they go to.

I labeled the cords that we use with a P-Touch label maker. I put cords with the items that I was keeping. The rest of the cords I put in a bin and offered it to family, friends and then donated the rest.

No extra chords, we've done this recently and we even got rid of tons of old phones, ipads, cameras that were broken or just out of date. Felt great!

Great! I've got 4 bins of cords that I'm going to get together and go through now. I'm going to try and be ruthless and get rid of as much as I can. Thanks this is a great idea for today.

I just decluttered our basement last week as my BIG project & I found a tub full of cords, so I went through them then. I would have never thought to go through them with out this. Crazy how many we keep. ~Samantha

I'm still with you, Steph! Cords are my husband's domain, so I leave those to him, as long as they're contained in one small box. But I did go through the box to see if there was anything that's not a cord, and I found an old flip phone, along with its charging cords. Off it went to be recycled!

Thank you Steph for this challenge. It is helping me out so much during this super busy month. There’s no way i would’ve thought to declutter my cords without you and I can’t wait to see the overall impact it’s abt to make on my home!! 🙏🤗💕

Cords done! Fortunately, I didn't have too many. So today was a lighter day for me. Thank you! I love how this challenge has been divided into categories, a nod to Kondo. Makes so much sense!

The best tip I ever got was to mark the cords when you buy new things. I label them with my labelmaker, and now I now what they are for. We still have older cords and cabels that my husband stores in the garage IF they should be useful.... :)

I HAD piles and baskets of misc. cords just like yours but a few years back got them all under control. I kept a few iPod’s and a few random cords that I felt I might need ‘someday’. Lol, todays the day to say OUT YOU GO!! Your nudge today is exactly what I need to release those few items. I have zero attachment to these things either.
    Thank you.

It just occurred to me that I could use my label maker to make label tags for the cords! This would be especially helpful for my husbands cords that I often forget the purpose of. Thanks so much of the challenge!

I am so impressed you knew what most of your cords went to. I did this job with my hubby a few weeks ago and we struggled a bit knowing what some were for. We sorted them in various boxes and got rid of duplicates. It looks so much better now.
