The most underrated scales/modes in my opinion. Thank you so much for this. Also check out Joe Byrd and The Field Hippies's Pelog:Moonsong for a cool psych-rock/pop interpretation of pelog!
Thank you for clearing this up for us. I started enjoying Gamelan music only recently and wanted to know more of the harmonic theory behind it. I found your video very helpful!!
Its me or first she say: Tembung with 2b and then 2nd natural, same for Sumaren, natural 5th and at the end say that it flavor is the 5b ??? How it works? Thanks
So weird to hear these starting on C. It's like a step or a step and a half flat from normal balinese tuning. I've always been perplexed at why the 1 of the scale is set where it is when the 6 sounds more like the tonic root. But I guess the system is set by whoever started it 100 years ago.
this is due to the tuning system not fitting into western tuning i think. but surely we can take inspiration from the compositional approaches and translate this onto a keyboard.

Awesome.
We need the full version of that Pelog Tembung tune.
I look up Pelog mode following Adam Kadmon's book for guitar and came across your video. Very nice demo on the scale tonality.

She shifted all three to the same root after first explaining where they sit on the pelog - hope that helps.
