always a treat when you do the deep-dive comparisons! buuut, ima need a back-to-back, or at least some time stamps in the description 🤘😬

Fantastic work but really needs back-to-back samples for easy comparison. Maybe do a short review video too?

Wonderful vid! Makes me very curious about 1.6 mm on my Tom’s; I have an RBH Westwood maple, wonder what it would do to the Tom’s? 🤔

I have one of these kits as well. The straight shells should open up a bit with 1.6mm hoops. But the mahogany already has a lot of low end naturally. I’m curious to try 3.0mm on mine to see how much it focuses the tone. 🤔

Great work, Mike. I love my Slingerland Stick Savers on both my 14 x5" Aluminium 140 10-lug and 14 x6.5" COB SoundKing 10-lug. As far as I was always led to believe, the Slingerland hoops are brass (or at least on the Soundking) which makes them feel quite solid and focussed to me. I'm also a big fan of S-Hoops..
For what it's worth, I've also experimented recently with swapping the 2.3mm triple-flange on the snare-side of another drum with 3mm. These feel like they hold tuning a touch better and are less bendy around the snare beds.
Keep up this amazing work and Happy New Year!

Yeah the old Slingerland hoops are brass. I love those hoops. Unfortunately they’re not available. Just the steel version.

The thin ones are my favorite. Looking forward to hearing how the wood hoops stack up.

Mike excellent work as always!! You dig in and really illustrate every facet of what changes you can get out of a hoop. Nothing like a 1.6 on Ludwig Supra but the stick savers really diminish the sound of the shell. I have had many Slingerlands and still have a few and they sound good but those hoops make the drum feel like you are playing on concrete. My favorite is a stick chopper though they will be in the next review, I have bought 6 sets from DFD and they are a game changer. Try a set on a Black Beauty, takes it to the next level.
Can't wait for the next video!!! Thanks!!

Thanks a lot for your work.
The Sticksavers third bend do not go very fare inward, so you had that tuning/stability problem. The Mapex and even more so the Sonor Vintage Series ones bend in a lot more and form a slight tunnel. The are way more stabil and very close to die cast hoops, without the weight. The Sonor Hoops from the 60es are even bend down around the screw hole (second bend) and are super sturdier. I prefer those on Snare, on Toms the Sticksaver work pretty well.
    Liebe Grüsse
    Benno

I really appreciate all of the effort you put into making these comparisons to isolate the effect of the different hoops. It's difficult to think about switching hoops based on liking the sound of another drum with different construction, bearing edges, heads, and hoops. As you said, the effect might be different on different drums, but this really helps give me an idea of how the hoop can influence the sound of any of my snares. Thanks!

I replaced all the rims on the toms on my mapex armory to 3mm triple flange from drumfactorydirect and replaced the stock heads with remo pinstripe. The set is now pro tier. Greatly improves sound.

Indeed! We excluded S-Hoops and a few others in this to focus on DFD’s in-house models only. I might return to the topic with other brands though.

I like the 1.6 the most. I have a 6.5” supraphonic and don’t love it yet my friend’s older one sounds perfect! His is older mine is newer so 2.3 verse 1.6 hoops is probably why I prefer his sound better.

Hey Mike! Thank you for this video! A wealth of information! “DFD seamless aluminum shell”?? When ever I go on to the DFD site, I’m going straight to what I need. I guess I should venture around on the site and discover stuff! Am I safe to assume that different lug hole drilling specs are available, along with throw and butt plate hole spacing and maybe snare bed widths? Also, is there any particular reason that the air vent hole is on the bottom half of the shell? I so curious!! Thanks again bro!!!
