It is quite hard to keep it happy (and not etiolated) here in the south of England, but I have kept it outside in the sunshine for as long as possible this year and it is flowering right now (lovely red flowers) :-)
Love your videos and you gave good explanation on the comparison. I have only some experience with succulents but what I have noticed is that the darker varieties of echeverias seem to need more ventilation/airflow to help with infestations etc. I have no idea why (wish I knew) but that is what I have noticed. My suggestion for the varieties you discussed here would be to ensure the pots are larger (or wider more to the point) or if in the ground on top of a small mound.
Great comment Leanne! Yeah I learned this too the hard way, I thought they'd be more suited to the harshest part of summer but apparently they need more protection compared to the lighter echeverias. The main reason I think is that they absorb far more heat compared to the lighter ones since white reflects light, while black absorbs light. So from now on I'm going to adjust my staging and place the darker plants at the back where they don't get as much sun as those in front.
I was sold a black knight 6 months ago and started to wonder if it was really a black prince. your video showed me it was !! I now want a black knight. They look awesome and judging by the comments they are easier to grow. Mine has been indoors since I bought it in the UK hasn't had a summer yet and is constantly covered in white patches. I treat it but the patches come back , reading another UK comment, I think mine lacks the ventilation it needs.
Great video. Love it. I find Black Prince very prone to rot and disease but they are so easy to propagate through leaves. My black knight has been with me for 2 years but I find it very slow in growing compared to the Black Prince.

I do believe what I have is a very stretched out "black knight" I loved the color as soon as I saw it, that glowing green center and blackest of black tips, but poor guy is in bad shape. Hi Karina, thanks for asking. There's a few differences between the two. The first and most noticeable would be the size. The prolifica tends to be a lot smaller compared to the derenbergii. It also clumps very tightly. It produces lots of pups along the flower stalks too. The derenbergii tends to be fatter, wider, and larger compared to the prolifica. Their flowers would also be very different. The prolifica has tiny yellow flowers, while the derenbergii would have very large orange/yellow flowers.

I know our seasons are opposite of you. I live in California and would like a video of what to do with plants that are dormant or slow growing. Most of my plants are echeverias and aeoniums. I like the fact that we are opposite seasons, this way I know what to do when they aren’t dormant in the coming winter.

Yeah they are green in the shade. As for babies, they can take on a different colour when really small and gain the darkness as they get more exposed to the sun.
It depends on how much light it is used to at the moment, which is mainly based on how much farina (the waxy coating on the leaves) it has. Despite its dark colour, the Black Prince has farina. You'll see it when you accidentally rub the leaves (please don't haha!). The idea is to let it grow new leaves with thicker farina than the existing ones. To do that, you'll have to gradually raise the light levels. Say give it an hour more sunlight every 2-3 weeks, depending on whether it is actively growing or not. If it is actively growing, the new leaves will emerge faster.
Hi Chuck, have you tried growing black prince from seeds before? I sowed five seeds that I ordered from France ten days ago on 17/07/2020. Haven't seen any signs of germination here. Hope it's not too hot here in Singapore for them. Could easily go to 90 Fahrenheit somedays
I haven't tried those from seeds yet. From experience though, seeds tend to take longer if it is too hot (or too cold). It is also possible that they are dormant right now. I do not have enough experience with germinating seeds to help you troubleshoot this. The method that worked for me was using very fresh seeds, so I'm not yet that experienced with germinating dormant seeds.

My echeveria black prince has a green part and not much darkish what i will do about it but there where had a full sun everyday and sometime cause of rain season right now

John Sheffield yeah they try closing uo when it gets too hot. You probably have to be a bit concerned when it gets too bright orange in color, it's too stressed and getting dehydrated by then.
Cerriscapades they are not changing colors yet. I have them in sun but they have a lot of shade especially at 12 p.m. where I live it gets hot and muggy / humid .
very good thorough comparison. I would add: black knight I can grow; black prince I can't haha. In all seriousness tho, I find my 2 black knights to be the most frequently flowering of all my echeverias - not sure if anyone else has that. Lastly, I again state for the record that the name 'Black Knight' should be officially reinstated because it is the coolest name ever!!

I go directly for systemic pesticides. I don't like to waste time fiddling with contact-based solutions because I might miss some of the bugs that are hiding. I just make sure to remove flowers first so that the pollinators do not somehow be affected.

I don't fertilize because I like keeping them stressed and my growing medium is mostly organic anyway, so they get lots of nutrients from the soil already. Take note that I can get away with my type of soil mix because of my climate.

I say a web page where they were breaking the words down so people like me don't get laughed at . I have been unable to do this collecting with succulents up until 7 months ago a vertebra fixed up and I was off but got laughed at the way I said the names . Why don't you get the names of yours and get someone to do them into synonyms.... Will pay one day on your site.

Well the lighter one that is. The darker red one to the front right of the crested Pappy's Rose is Echeveria 'Fireball'
