He won a contest and performed the song on stage. look it up, I was there and this guy killed the Diorites voice.
As much as I love Mark III Deep Purple's live version of this song (with David Coverdale on vocals), there's something about Dio's version that takes it to another level. Truly a talented man!
That's One of my favourite songs from deep purple. Although Dio didn' t make part of the band, this song seems to be created for his voice. So powerful 👏👏👏

Such a great blusey quality to his vocals. I'm not at all familiar with this singer, or for that matter, heavy metal, but I see I've missed out on something here. GREAT vocals! Thanks Ken. Kevin O'Rourke
Dio's vocal folds are so loose and flexible it sounds like he can hit whatever note he wants whenever he wants. His air support his unreal. he never sounds like he ever tightens up.
Dio just uses his chest mix but it always gives me the impression that he hits his extremely high notes in a chest voice, I can't feel any peak vibrations in his head on this version of Mistreated and that's really impressive, plus his fantastic breathing support , he has a lot of resistance and a lot of compression in his voice and that obviously allows him to hit those notes in that register with some ease; That sustained G5 that he hits in the song Wild One in the studio version, I'm sure he hit that note in pure chest voice and he demonstrates to master the larynx with technical excellence, when executing the note his throat is wide open and projected with high level of distortion and you can't see any peak of vibration in the head, it was impressive that he hit that G5 in a chest voice in my opinion and for many it is considered almost impossible for male singers.
I’ve only discovered Rainbow in the last month or so. I can’t believe I’ve never listened to them before. Truly Amazing line up with Dio, Blackmore, Cozy, Daisley and Stone. I wish they did more together! I’ve listened to Mistreated almost on repeat along with Stargazer. Life changing 😂
The version on the live "On Stage" album is even better, in fact, that album's got to be on the same level as "Made In Japan", just unreal performance all around.
Recorded this back in the eighties on VHS. Tape got more worn out than the 16 track of Bohemian Rhapsody. 😉 Too bad you missed the start of Dio's singing after the instrumental part.
One of my favorite songs sung by Dio. I first heard this a couple of decades back and was awe struck ( still am in fact ). I saw Dio on the Heaven And Hell tour with Sabbath in 80 then again for the Mob Rules tour, Sabbath and four or five more times on his solo projects. Once with a very new and unknown Queensryche who only had a four song record out at the time. I heard " Queen Of The Ryche" while driving way back when by this " new band out of Seattle " as they were described... Ken, I was so devastated by Tates voice I had to pull over to listen, I couldn't concentrate on driving and listening at the same time ( it may have saved lives I might add ). I love Coverdales version too. But Dio nails this song for sure ......
Ronnie was a true vocal power house and easily one of the best metal singers to ever have stepped onto a stage. My introduction to Ronnie was in the mid/late 70's, when he was a guest singer for Roger Glover's "Love is all (The Butterfly Ball)", i was young and didnt know who he was, but i knew i loved his voice. And a few years later, early 80's i discovered Rainbow with Dio and a little later the band Dio itself, and been a fan of his voice ever since. He too could do anything, sing anything, and it would sound great. Thnx for the upload Ken :D ("love is all" is also note worthy as a song for a review? :P)
Excellent reaction dude I had the pleasure of seeing a show from this tour on Long Island in New York I was 17..we all came to see Blackmore and of course dio.. but Ritchie was the man we came to see..but the instrumentals are great you should let it play through.. The California jam version with Coverdale singing of course was excellent as well..different style but he really sang fantastic on that version.
I saw this tour, it was for the Long Live Rock n Roll album, I was always a big Purple and Rainbow fan but the first number was Kill the King and this little fella walked on and just nailed everyone to the wall, I have never seen effortless power like that before or since, and that Includes Coverdale, Gillan, Lou Gramm, even Paul Rodgers, Glenn Hughes is amazing life but maybe overdoes the screams a little. But wonderful, memories to have.
Hi Ken, I'm a guitarist (to be very honest, I used to be, today I'm just a manager in just a company, but somehow I love your channel because you are a great singer) but RJD's voice always brings tears in my eyes: He is God and never before or after a human voice will ever make me feel like he does whenever listen to his performance. RIP and make the angels jealous, Ronnie.
It's hard to beat Ronnie James Dio.

Yep, Coverdale gave the original his all as he always does, but no-one beats Dio
Its absolutely fantastic! Ronnie really shines in this one!
He does, sarty23!
Hey Ken! I love every time you do a Dio reaction. It is one of the few times I see you singing along and you do it great.
Haha! Thank you!
What a gem! It was already one of my favorite DP songs. This is beyond epic!
The solo guitar there. Is such godness!!...so..spiritual..!
🎸🎸🎸
That was awesome! Ken, I know you can sing anything you want, however, this style seems to really suit you well. You sounded awesome singing along!
The version on the live "On Stage" album is even better, in fact, that album's got to be on the same level as "Made In Japan", just unreal performance all around.
Thanks for the suggestion, FoggyBrain Music!
Hahaha Ken, you crack me up. I love how you react to Dio singing. He IS amazing!
"these songs make me wanna sing, I can't help myself" Hallelujah Ken Hallelujah
Hahaha!
Recorded this back in the eighties on VHS. Tape got more worn out than the 16 track of Bohemian Rhapsody. 😉
Too bad you missed the start of Dio's singing after the instrumental part.
Great thoughts! Thank you Ken!
Who would’ve known I’d be watching Ken’s reaction videos while preparing breakfast... you’re family now hahaha great job, man!
Outstanding RJD performance. One of a kind. I love Glenn´s high pitched vocals at the end in the DP version.
Rock on!
Marvellous Ronnie, Thanks a lot
One of the best!
There is a great live version with Deep Purple, orchestra, and Dio (1999?). He sings Sitting in a Dream and Love is All.
"I have never seen effortless power like that before or since" is the best description of a singer I've ever seen
😊
I'm sorry for Mr. Coverdale but Dio made this his own song. It's like Hendrix covering a song, it's just better.
This is awsome. Love this Ken. Thanks. Love you.heck yes!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
