How to fix Bogging/hesitation when accelerating or hit WOT (wide open throttle)

    in this video I show how to fix a hesitation and/or bogging issue with carburetors by adjusting secondaries. Car used in this video is a 1976 corvette stingray that would bog when punched on the gas too fast or quickly. This of course will apply to most classic vehicles equipped with a Rochester 4 barrel Quadrajet / Quadra jet carb

    The Pull Over Enrichment holes(POE) on YOUR carb model are also ABOVE the leading edge of the air doors. If you've made any performance mods other than your intake, you might also want to consider cutting two small semi-circular openings(the size of a pencil eraser) on the air doors by these holes. This will start the flow of air/fuel mixture thru the POE quicker as the air doors begin to open thus preventing bogs.

      I've been running the Edelbrock for the last 6 years, 2 weekends ago I grabbed a proper quadrajet that was on a 75 Nova w/ a 350 off marketplace for $20. I haven't even rebuilt it yet and there's WAY more off the line and stoplight to stoplight with this one. Once I get this one dialed in, it's going to be WAY better than the Edelbrock I've sworn by for years now.... So if you still are running that, take your time and find one that was on a passenger car and a 350, it does matter, you don't want one from a 307 pickup truck, completely different jets and metering throughout the unit. It's worth the time to monkey around with trust me.

      Check your fuel pressure make sure that it doesnt drop under like 40 psi when you accelerate hard. If you havent done spark plugs on it in the past 100k miles, i suggest new plugs. You can have a restricted exhaust like a clogged catalytic converter. A bad throttle body/throttle possition sensor. Clogged injectors, clogged fuel filter. All of those can be affecting the truck...I wish I could narrow it down for you more but unfortunately without proper diagnosis and running through all those checks...I can only give you my thoughts on things i would check...

    the secondary air doors open too fast and cause the engine to lean out. you can change the secondary fuel rods to get a fatter mixture and that gets the bog out. when the secondary air doors open fast, they lift the fuel metering rods with it. it leans out from too much air and not enough fuel. you can still achieve the right balance of air fuel mixture at wide open throttle

    the trick with a rochester quadrajet is to keep at least one or two extra carburetors. you grannie tune one for fuel economy and emissions if you're state or province mandates emissions testing. you keep that carburetor in a box and leave it in the trunk or shop bench. then you take an older quadrajet and you "school bus calibrated" slightly fatter mixture on primaries or idle mixture, then you find or make a set of secondary fuel rods that are like toothpicks on the tips. you can make the adjustments in small increments to achieve the right amount of mixture for wide open throttle. no little 750cfm square bore or double pumper should keep up with it. unless they knew how to tune it better than you

      Unless someone put an old engine and fuel delivery system, the 2001 Ford won't have a carburetor. 2001 is already fuel injection. This adjustment wouldn't be available in your set up

    Could open manifolds also cause this?

    • @EddiesCustomsandRestorations
      @EddiesCustomsandRestorations  ปีที่แล้ว

      You will hear it more with open manifolds yes but it will be more of a consistent pop more like on deceleration

    The flathead screw feel like it’s free spinning and it doesn’t seem to be giving any tension to the flap

    If this is happening on a new EFI car, is it the throttle body likely sticking open?

    • @EddiesCustomsandRestorations
      @EddiesCustomsandRestorations  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not enough fuel more than likely.

      My tbi has a similar problem runs great at 1st but starts bogging once I come to accelerate after a stop. It even backfires and shuts off.

      @@EddiesCustomsandRestorations oh man....just my luck....I think I tightened the bottom one too much cause the flap isn't getting tight now and I knew better than to crank down on it. Shittttt. I just got done doing a flex plate replacement and I restored my gas tank as well. Finally thought I was gonna be in good shape lol

    Hello what to do if it's stuck open?

    • @EddiesCustomsandRestorations
      @EddiesCustomsandRestorations  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something should be holding it. If its just seized I would recommend adding some WD40 to the pivot points and tapping back and fourth to try to shake it loose. But gently so you don't bend the flap

    The best way to fix that piece of junk is to throw it in the trash. That is by far the very worst excuse for a 4brl carburetor that I have had the displeasure of dealing with. And yours looks new like a replacement. And there you go!

      Thank you kindly but Unfortunately the 95 chevy will have a different set up. It should be Throttle Body Injection (TBI) which is a newer technology compared to carbureted which is what I showed on this video...
