The other big reason why the G.I.Joe comic was easier to jump into was not just because of its real-world, military groundedness but because readers were likely to be already familiar with most of the characters from the toys (which often didn't make it to the cartoon). As a kid, I spent so much time browsing toy aisles and reading characters' file cards. Anecdotally, I jumped into comics through Transformers, which wasn't a grounded military comic and which had some fantastical elements (although admittedly not to the degree of many superhero comics). Jim Shooter might be despised by creators working at Marvel in the 1980s, but I absolutely think he made some great business decisions.

    • @jamesdlin7
      @jamesdlin7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@3dartistguy I said he made *some* great business decisions. I never claimed that he made only great business decisions. Yes, Secret Wars 2 was stupid, but Secret Wars 1 was a success. New Universe was a flop, but I think there were some good ideas there (and lessons learned) that he later took to Valiant. And while New Universe was a failure, Shooter also started the Star and Epic lines. Shooter claims that turning Hank Pym into a wife-beater wasn't intentional and that deadlines prevented them from fixing it. When he was running Marvel, I do think he overall made more good business decisions than bad ones.

    • @jamesdlin7
      @jamesdlin7 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@3dartistguy Shooter claims that Hank hitting Janet was supposed to be accident. I agree it's a weak argument. (But can you really argue that his meddling in Uncanny X-Men 137 wasn't warranted and wasn't an improvement?) I also already acknowledged that he was despised by his employees; I don't doubt he was a terrible boss. Finally, I'm not sure that you can classify Valiant as a failure; it was doing pretty well until Shooter was ousted from there too.

I think Jim Shooter did a lot more good than bad over the course of his comics career. Honestly, he's much needed NOW for current Marvel comics (which seriously needs new leadership. They seriously need Jim Shooter to come in there for at least a year or two to clean things up and set everything on a good path). I think his main problem was his attitude. He had a very "my way or the highway" attitude which he took a bit too far (which made a lot of people hate him, despite the success he was helping to bring to companies like Valiant, Marvel, etc. I've read interviews where comic artist and writer John Byrne was so angry at Shooter that he made a dummy that was suppose to represent and look like Shooter and then he BURNED the dummy by setting off a huge fire while pretending that he was burning Jim Shooter alive. And he did this in front of other Marvel employees. That's some serious hatred right there. LMAO).
Overall, Shooter did a lot of great things at both Marvel and Valiant. Yeah, he did some dumb things (Secret Wars 2 was LAME. Crazy that he wrote Secret Wars 1 which was awesome and then wrote the crappy sequel. I guess he wanted something very different and not a rehash of S.W 1, but he severely went too far trying to make the sequel different. Also, New Universe felt like a "low budget TV" version of a comic universe compared to the "big budget movie" feel of the traditional Marvel universe. I know he wanted a more grounded, realistic superhero universe but it went a bit too far. Granted, there was a lot of stuff I did like about New Universe when Shooter was in charge of it (I enjoyed his Star Brand, for the most part, and D.P 7 and Psi-Force for the most part), even if all of it felt like a low budget TV movie at times. However, I actually enjoyed New Universe more after Shooter left and John Byrne took over Star Brand (and the other New Universe titles got a bit more wilder)... which Byrne strangely used to take several huge shots at Shooter during the first few issues of his Star Brand run. LOL. Granted, Byrne also severely made fun of himself in a huge way in one of the early issues of his Star Brand run, so at least he was being fair. LOL.)

Michael, you should try Sgt. Rock and the other DC War Comics from the 1960's-'80's. I grew up on those, and they are great! Rock got four hardback re-issue collections (if they were going to do them all, they'd have more than four... they stopped making these for some reason). (There are some black-and-white compilations that cover more) The art, the stories, the characters... if you like war comics, you really haven't even begun unless you've dived into these!

Man, I had forgotten how good GI Joe comics were at the time. I read them regularly but had sort of forgotten about them. But seeing those panels with Ace in the Skystriker against the Cobra Rattler pilot and the salute they shared as the two burning planes flew by each other... it really reminded me of the joy of reading those comics. It brought to mind the memory of the completely silent Storm Shadow / Snake Eyes comic with Scarlett attempting to sacrifice herself to save Snake-Eyes. I'm half tempted to go back and read them, but also don't want to burst the nostalgia bubble in case they're not as good as I remember.

Military/GI Joe comics aren't my bag but I do appreciate the suggestion here that the writing quality is paramount; a lot of my abandonment of modern comics has had more to do with new writers coming in and not having a healthy respect for the tradition of the characters and the world in question and simply trying to inject as much modern socio-political material in as edgy a way as possible but at the cost of the characters and the legacy behind them. If this series maintains that quality and doesn't compromise to Twitter types who don't actually read or buy comics but stick to their guns (no pun intended) updating these stories and still holding onto that rich history, then it'll make me a little happier knowing that some producers of comics are still approaching these properties with a mature, thoughtful point of view.

The 'Nam was a highly acclaimed maxi series, it actually had a set run and features gritty stories and excellent art. I definitely suggest it to any historical war buff because it did no effort in hiding how messy the Vietnam Conflict got.

Im really glad Retroblasting did a video covering this. As Retroblasting knows, my little channel has been covering the modern IDW run of GIJoe. I have yet to pick up any of the issues. I can share that artist Netro Diaz who is an artist on GIJoe has been recruited to draw a few issues. He is a excellent young upcoming Artist and his art work is easy to pick out ( Sample GIJoe Issue 250 and especially the 4 issue Silent Option story arch featuring Agent Helix) . Most of my knowledge in Action Force is coming from Retroblasting and our friend Analog Toys. Im so impressed with everything Valaverse is doing and it shows BEST choices are made by people that care VS a Corporate board looking at some stupid Spreadsheet and feedback from a random focus group. My hope is one of the smaller Comic companies such as IDW, Dynamite, maybe Boom Studios will pick up this series and offer it for sale at LCS ( local comic shops).. Do you know of any news regarding that? Again, I thank Retroblasting ( and Analogy) for their support for Valaverse. I too look forward to joining the excitement

I would be very careful handling ips to comic book publishers, I think the best approach would be in house. There's a high risk of **progressive** activist infiltrating franchises and we end up back to square one of milktoast stories and gi joe male swimsuit covers.

This looks good. When I was a kid in the 70s and 80s we had an amazing comic named Commando. It featured standalone adventures generally set in WW2. They were black and white and the artwork was poor but they had tons of charm. When I was a kid it was all about WW2 for me, from the Action Men to the small plastic Airfix soldiers to the excellent war movies of the 60s and 70s... everything was WW2. Both my grandfathers were veterans and it seemed very real and visceral to me. It's funny how the world moves on. There isn't the same level of cultural representation for kids of, say, the Gulf war or the war on terror. Things are more fantastical these days and real conflicts are not used in the same way as the second world war was in the 70s.

My favorite GI Joe was when I got to see Snake Eyes origin unmasked I think he was in Nam in that had blond hair etc. I remember one of them had an issue I think with Wolverine or Punisher or somebody who was in The Nam I can't remember. Then there was like Sgt Rock some other Ghost Tank I can't even remember. I was never that into Western comics but I regret not taking Ghost Rider on the Horse that found somebody had thrown in trash when I was like Ten. Action Force sounds interesting at least if into that kinda style. That guy looks just like Sgt Slaughter to me I still remember my figures of him. OH it is him that is even cooler haha. My Fridge Perry who I mailed away for had his arm break sadly though. That dude looks a lot like Flint to me?

I remember I started my comic journey with Todd McFarlane’s spider man, and when I could eventually afford each monthly panini marvel comic, U.K. editions, comprised of about six comics based around Spider-Man, x-men, fantastic four etc. I just jumped right in the middle of many story arcs. It was tough, but I waited it out and happily loved them all from there on in.

At point 7:31, “The Dude” that Sgt. Slaughter is referring to is suggested to be Dashiell Fairborne.
In Condor’s bio it states he was orphaned at a young age and an American Special Forces soldier took him in and brought him back to America to raise him. It was heavily implied that that man was Dashiell “Flint” Fairborne. That’s why he’s wearing the black beret. In the AF issue that takes place, there is a reference that someone close to Condor is being held prisoner and it’s someone who was close to Sarge when they were previously in a “Special Unit” together.
That was my understanding of it. And, if AF is giving Sarge his history of being in GI Joe before the events of AF, then the ages and everybody would line up for it to be Flint as well.
I believe the intention was to give Sarge his props for being in GI Joe before AF and Valaverse found a clever way to connect some characters in their backgrounds. But I could be wrong.

As a tiny tot I didn't find comic book story lines confusing because I come from "church people", and the bible prepares you for a mish-mash of confusing story lines filled with mayhem, murder and betrayal. If the comics had included sex then it would have checked all the bible boxes. In the 1970's my kids TV programming included "Rich Man, Poor Man", "Trilogy of Terror" and for purely educational content I had "The Twilight Zone".
As a child my first introduction to the Hulk was Incredible Hulk Vol 1 #141. It included the 1st appearance of Doc Sampson. It is a self contained story line with a beginning, a middle and an end. I might actually love this comic more than 1977's Star Wars! I urge everyone to read it and share it with their kids and ask them what they think about the choices the characters made throughout, especially Bruce Banner.

I've illustrated for a couple of years a series of books about a contemporary elite paratrooper squad, I can tell you that one of the hardest things to consistently draw are the character's weapons, armor and gear. Unlike sci-fi fantasy tech, you literally can't make this sh*t up, or else you'll get called out for drawing the wrong rifle, or for drawing the soldier incorrectly handling his firearm. You gotta do your homework and research, I even had to use Google sketchup so I could trace a 3d model of the rifle from any angle and perspective.

This video also brings up a good point on why it's hard to bring back Gi-Joe these days with modern themes. Either it fails because it's too dark for Gi-Joe or it's excuted poorly and seen as tasteless, not to mention I think the war on terror has kinda made people sick of war toys. It's I believe Hasbro is mainly trying to make Gi-Joe collector-only these days and focusing more on lines like Transformers, My Little Pony, Marvel, Star Wars, abd Ghostbusters which are more safe with the general public and all have fanciful themes.

Yeah, my 1st Spider-Man comic book was chapter one of the Sin-eater story, the death of Jean DeWolf. My introduction to her was her life flashing before her eyes as she was bleeding out from a gunshot wound. I was used to Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. That's a marked departure. If the blood was colored red, it would have rated PG-13. It skirted so close to the limits allowed by the CCA.

It was a military comic where I first read about the A-10, as it had a page dedicated to modern weaponry. Also, I understand and relate to this description on superhero comics, I grew up in a small town, so only access to comics was at local drug store, and they weren't diligent on keeping the racks stacked with most up to date, and if it was a cross-over storyline, the drug store might not carry the comic starting/finishing the storyline.

I dunno if the GI Joe movies payed more homage to the original characters and stuff I think they'd have done allot better. IMO they they tried to modernize without any kind of proper respect to the characters from before that I loved and it felt hollow in comparison.
That being said I think I'll check action force out. It looks interesting and maybe I'll pick up the action figures if I like it. I disregaded the toy line at first but as with all toy lines if you don't have something like a comic or cartoon how do you get any kind of emotional attachment to want the toy? Maybe I will take the plunge into this and the new Gi JOE stuff. Still hate the prices though.

The idea of a new set of comics that presents an updated view of military comics is something I would like to see.
I hate to write it, but the comics were almost all flat and boring. I felt like issue one was interesting, but then it didn't last. It felt like there just wasn't enough story and it felt like you could tell that just by the very small page count. It was underwhelming.

I guess I always thought of GI Joe as being as much a sci fi comic as most super heroes. After all it had robots, snake men, ninjas, space ships and all of that. That being said I can see how it would be more new reader friendly than something like Spider-Man simply by virtue of it not having decades of lore someone has to decipher.
I like that this new comic seems to be maintaining some of the sci fi elements with the Swarm looking more like hydra or cobra (the figure even has a flight pack). At the same time I also like that the good guys are more grounded in traditional real world military stuff.

GIJoe a Real American Hero and GIJoe Special Missions comics were all written by Larry Hama. He was the same guy who wrote all of the original toy file cards going back to 1982. The current GIJoe ARAH comic now published by IDW has revived the numbering from the old Marvel era and once again are written by Larry Hama.

Great review Michael . I loved how the minister felt like the story in gi joe issue 1 with rock n roll and the ram. Cannot wait to get wave 1 of AF

Superhero comics weren't confusing for me in grade school. Because I didn't read them then. 😂

Nice brief and concise piece. I bought a second full set of the comics and sent to my close lifelong friend who is a hardcore GI Joe collector that’s been on the fence regarding new AF. After reading the comics, he was impressed and is now on board. Here’s to a healthy and long future for Valaverse Action Force.

Thanks for giving a good explanation on the brand and the basics of the story. Definitely not my thing. Military stuff was never my jam. Not unless it has a degree of fantasy or heavy Sci-fi element to it. Although I am a huge Punisher fan so I can’t really explain that. Haha.
But it doesn’t take away that the figures and comic look very well done. 👍

Funny how several comicbooks not from the big two seems to have more interesting stories to tell.

I liked the 'Nam and G.I. Joe comics too. I read mostly Marvel stuff, but I also loved G.I. Combat and Sgt Rock.

I'm all but abandoning G.I. Joe when it comes to modern. It's too expensive and frustrating. I can't get into the retro collection, Classified or vintage so I'm letting it go. Not really into Action Force but from Michaels synapses it starring to get me interested. Now if I can get the books and figures this might be my substitute for Joes. It's sad really to know Hasbro doesn't have as much faith in their own properties versus ones they had acquired.

Nice, must admit I have been waiting for the figures first as I want to see what ‘vibe’ they give on the type of stories they have before enjoying a binge reading of the comics. This is making me look forward to the comics now too. Damn you…! 🤣🤣

Yeah, none of those qualifications made any difference to me. But I did start more or less with G.I.Joe and Transformers. AKA Gateway Comics.

What new places? All G. I. Joe did was fight the war on terror. Badly. If that's not topical..
