How to Throw Forehands Farther | Disc Golf for Beginners

  • The forehand is an interesting throw. It seems like you either start out a predominant forehand player, or you go for a long time without ever picking it up. Having a solid forehand throw in the bag enables you to attack a multitude of courses, but just like the backhand we all often want one thing with this throw...more distance.
    So how does one go about gaining distance on a forehand? The mechanics of a great forehand can be quick to learn but long to master, especially when we start talking distance. I believe the easiest way to learn a max distance forehand is to go back to the basics. What exactly does that mean? You'll have to watch to find out!

    Thanks once again Robbie. My surgeon still has my backhand throws limited to less than 150 ft so I will not reinjure my bicep but has given the forehand an all clear earlier this week. As a predominantly rhbh chucker with a far less than serviceable flick I need a lot of instruction and field work. Well, let me tell you that the drills you have in this vid has helped so very much. In just a few throws I was chuckin' the Heat and Leopard 3 smoothly and further than I have before. While my injury has kept me out of the tournament scene, you and the guys at Overthrow have been putting out quality, helpful content that, I believe, will help me reach my DG goals. Thanks again.

    I needed this. I'm 6months into the game forehand has always been more natural to me. But as my disc beat in my forehand went to crap. What started as a solid right hook became a unintentional roller. I'm definitely going to use this to figure out my bag and get back to loving my forehand. It just feels so much more natural, especially in the woods where I can look forward and pick a target.

    Old 4 digit duffer here. Solid backhand player for many years. One day a few years ago I started losing confidence in my backhand. To the point that I knew I had to do something or give up the game. So I began developing a forehand game. I'm a much better golfer now than I ever was before. I can do things with a disc forehand that I could never do backhand. Shot under par for the first time the last time I played. Always looking for pointers to improve my drive. Distance is my problem. Can't crack 300'. I'll keep you're ideas in mind when I'm out on the course.

    Well, sir, I’m a few weeks into this, at what I’d call “angle 3” of the four angles you described, under-stable discs only, stand still. Indeed I can now throw said discs with consistency at around 180’. Not monster throws to be certain, but pretty darned good considering where I started. This stuff works when put into practice! Thanks!

    I just started back handing cause I've got a bad elbow so I usually always forehand, so I use a Leopard3, Teebird, and Destroyer.
    Something I recently learned was the amount of speed you put on a disc matters too.
    My buddy and I will say "Im throwing a 7 speed like it was a 9 speed," this gives us a little flex in our shots and with my leopard3 it travels left instead of the right which helps cause I can't drive backhand and need the right line threw some trees.
    Hope this helps, your content has helped me so I'm paying it forward.

    as someone whose been playing under a year these tips helped me learn to throw a forehand with confidence: 1- think of skipping a rock, its similar to that (lead with elbow). 2- (from Overthrow disc golf forearm series on youtube) Imagine how you would throw a hammer sideways on a similar angle- its the same release and wrist flick action to throw a disc forehand, imagine the disc has a hammer going through it and you gotta hinge and sling it as such. These tips alone helped me to be able to immediately throw as far as I can throw backhand, getting the release angle right and consistent is a whole other problem for me though.

    Forehand capability is a must. Anyone who has played competetively knows you at least have to have a forehand game for scrambling. These are good tips for practice, for sure. Just got back from the field. Worked like a charm. My forehands had been coming out with a bad anhyzer. By working back to flat, from a hard hyzer, I figured out that what feels like a slight hyzer, to me, is actually flat. Hence the anhyzer releases.
      Also, it actually seemed easier to get understable fairway drivers and mids, to hyzer flip, forehand, than backhand.
      Thanks again for the info!

    The best forehand tip I've ever gotten on forehand is more spin! Sounds dumb but the more you can spin it the less it wobbles. To get more spin its simple! It's like snapping a towel once your hand reaches the peak snap your hand back. Great for touch putter shots too

    • @prattacaster

    I started disc golf last year with a Boss and learned to crank over on it for what i thought were awesome flex shots but nowadays i can't break the habit and my forehands have gone to shit with the ridiculous wobble. So i decided to learn left hand back hand and its going pretty well but I'd still like to get a nice forehand without wobble so I'm gonna be trying these tips soon. Thanks!

    • @prattacaster
      @prattacaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is how I started, all along knowing my form wasn't great. The way I worked out of it was practicing 100-150ft approach shots. These are mainly just wrist flick shots and will train you to use proper wrist snap to get the wobble out. The wobble is caused by not putting enough spin on the disc. So slow your arm speed down, throw some neutral mids straight and without wobble and then move up. Whenever I have a crappy forehand shot now, I know I had too much are speed and not enough wrist action to get the proper amount of spin on the disc.

  • @jeremylevitt5957
    @jeremylevitt5957 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was going to ask when you were going to do a flick video. You read my mind! I agree with everything you're saying. I started an a anhyzer angle to get max distance and now it's hard to release flat. Reach back doesn't matter as much with a forehand, its all about the follow through!

    • @michaelcushman
      @michaelcushman 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disagree about the reach back. The physics is that of a whip, a karate chop. Try either of those with more or less coil. Yes, dont straighten the elbow like a backhand, it stays at 90 degrees, but the elbow can and should leave the ribs, just like a baseball throw "reaches back" on the coil, max shoulder rotation to create tension in the core.

    • @jeremylevitt5957
      @jeremylevitt5957 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelcushman I do agree with what you're saying. I'm just stating it's not as important as it is in backhand. Watch how mcbeth throws his forehand.

  • @harleybk3
    @harleybk3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is there a reasonable timeline regarding the transition through the 4 angles? For example, does the “spike hyzer” first angle take from 3 to 5 field sessions, or simply until it feels right? Probably not a perfect answer, but any recommended rule of thumb?

    If you did learn using the smash a flex forehand method and dont have the touch, start incorporating lighter discs and it will help you learn to smooth out your throw. I.E. instead of 174 Halo Destroyers, try a 160 Blizzard Destroyer. Youll still be overstable range, but they will not handle the torque of a Halo.

    Field work: what a good method for Forehand, to maximize learning, and progression? I do two days of Fieldwork all RHBH. I try forehand stuff, but don’t really know what and how to improve.

      My biggest advice would be to worry less about distance initially, but instead accuracy and smoothness. It's not hard to throw a forehand 250+, but it's really hard for a lot of of players to throw a forehand precisely where they want. Practicing accuracy will force you to have a smooth forehand throw

      Keep your sessions short and directed. Focus on angle control, spin, height, footwork, accuracy, flight line, distance. But don't overload too many into one session. Get something that's neutral to understable(I always suggest DD convict) and learn to control the spin, angle, turn and fade on that. Then you'll be able to do ANYTHING with a felon/firebird, etc.

    Approx how many of each of the angles would you suggest or how do you know when you are ready to goto the next angle?

      I’d say there are about 4 between the extreme hyzer and the flat shot! And it’s just till it feels smooth and natural!

    2 fingers are getting better but my thumb placement is a problem my run up was a problem and getting it flat was a problem

    I always threw forehands on a hyzer upshot. Recently, due to wind,
    I’ve been driving with them. Now my
    Forehand is crazy unpredictable. I don’t know what’s going to happen. They fly straight to left when they used to go left to right, or they just bury themselves. I was better before I started listening to advice. That, or I need better technique. Haha.

    A Smooth release helps the most because you lose a lot of distance and accuracy if it's wobbling from the beginning

      Throw easier! I'm a 31 year old, but have had consistent issues with my right shoulder/elbow from tennis and baseball growing up. But! I've found I can throw

    • @bernan1
      @bernan1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      start with your wrist. Do wrist flick forehands (with some elbow) for upshots. Then slowly add in more a shoulder depending on how it feels. I can't throw a full forehand or overhand due to shoulder problems. But just a flick of up to 200 ft really opens up some great upshots.
      Also...in place of some forehand lines, I'll throw a roller as it will finish in the same direction. Not as accurate, but better than nothing.
