I bought me a 99 suburban at a Auction. She was pissed that I bought it. Now it’s her Daily Driver. She realized I know what I’m doing. After 30 years she just goes with it
I feel your pain. I learned the hard way, before you start dating a girl, get a credit check on her. For many reasons, one of which you just mentioned.
I agree with you 110%. I have figured out.. If I took my wife's pile of shit and fixed every imaginery thing that could ever go wrong with it.. it still boils down to "she aint got no damn clue of what the fuck I do, how I do it". All she knows, is I spent moolah on some tools and what does she get out of it?
8 years married and I have flipped more crazy things than I can remember. I tell my friends that ask if my wife gets mad, or say their wife wouldn’t let them “if every car you bought made money how many would your wife let you buy?”
This is good advice all around. I once heard someone say, "It's not about the miles but it's about the SMILES" and at the end when you mentioned that a car is not an investment, but it's purpose is to have fun, it also reminded me of what others on this channel have said about how a car tends to have more perceived value when the previous owner has fully enjoyed it and can tell stories about it. I'm sure that there's a mullet wearing g-body enthusiast in every city that has a 4-mile Monte Carlo that's probably not worth anything close to what they paid for it.
My 5-yr old saw the pic of us at halloween a couple years ago and said “that’s me when I was a fat-cheek man!” And then said “momma I want to watch something else”
Biggest thing I learned selling cars when I was 18 is buy cars planning for a loss (ideally, know the potential yearly loss), then be excited when they break even or show profit. Most importantly, enjoy the hell out of them while you own it! The "too good to be true" deals almost never happen these days (especially when even the most ignorant seller being able to find everything they could ever need to know about value in 2 minutes) so just buy the cars you want for the best deal you can negotiate & enjoy the ride.
Married 10 years next month! Better to ask forgiveness than permission so long as it does not upset the finances! Or my favorite approach, talk about it for days/months and then when I buy it (tools or parts) I simply play dumb and act like I thought she was aware! Not my fault that she tunes me out 99% of the time if she hears Guns, ammo, car/parts, tractor/parts or fishing!
This is why I have a blast with my $3000 Pontiac Fiero. Cheap to buy, cheap to own, and at the end of the day, if I lose money on it, oh well, I'm not that far into the car anyway.
in my local area we had a “Fiero Club” it was one guy. he lived along a prominent road with a long straight driveway. he had them parked like a car show and would fix up one after the other. like 10 cars average
@@mexicanspec Buying a car is thousands of dollars. If your wife doesn't care about that, then chances are she's already got a backup plan or is using your overspending to justify something she is wasting money on.
My wife restrains me to one daily driver, and one toy- which makes sense; we only have space for two vehicles anyway. But the advice works with my other hobby, which is vintage wrist watches. I discuss each purchase with her, including one of the important points- whether I intend to regularly wear it or not. I have a lot of extremely rare, one off vintage pieces that are valuable as “vault queens”, and she agrees to them on the basis I promise not to wear them; when I decided to buy myself a gold Rolex Thunderbird as a new daily watch. She appreciated that I was honest as to the purpose of the purchase (wear it, not for investment/collection purposes), and we didn’t have a fight about it. Honesty really is the key.
Great video. My wife of 25 years enjoyed it as well. I just recently pulled her into the hobby with me by getting her a 2008 Miata PRHT to go along with my 1996. In fact Doug had a silver one for sale back in May when we were looking but it got gone before we could sort out the logistics of getting to Ohio. She wasn't keen on road tripping for a toy. So we bought local.
That’s some good advice. You didn’t mention though the satisfaction of building or restoring your own car and the feeling of driving what you’ve invested your own blood, sweat and tears into. That’s what helps drive me!!

As a person who enjoys the car hobby and has a wonderful wife who tends to go on long drives to buy cars with me, this is the most accurate video on this! Well done!
“Most cars cost money to earn…“ Love it that you were able to come to such a conclusion that it even sounds silly to say but yet so true all of us are guilty of sitting on the toilet counting doing the same mask over and over ambitiously counting eggs that haven’t hatched from chickens who haven’t even laid eggs yet who’s earn eggs haven’t yet hatched… Thanks for the videos, cheers! PS it seems better to look forward to acquiring some thing or build up toward it then it is when you get a hold of what you always wanted. “Never meet your heroes“ so true so true…
I agree on Doug's point that cars are not an investment, cars are commodities, they MAY go up in price in a few years or depreciate less than other similar cars, but until they increase in price or stop depreciating as much, they'll cost a fair amount to keep in good conditions, and in most cases you'll lose a few hundreds(at best) or a few thousands if you "invest" in cars without prior experience in the car market.
I do the same thing. Bought a dirt bike that I bought with money I had saved up, fixed it, enjoyed it, flipped it. Rinse and repeat about 12 times, and I have yet to ever lose money on any toy I have purchased and that *WE* have enjoyed. I also discuss all purchases with her first, and the deals are all done in cash. Never had an issue, and neither has she.
I don't have to ask my wife about any of the financial decisions I make. We are a one income family and her debit card always works. Sometimes I tell her what I am about to do and sometimes I tell her what I have done. It is my responsibility to make sure it works and most often it does so she is happy. When I hear and read these comments about guys asking their wives if they can buy something I just shake my head. But then again I would never do something so stupid as buy a car for a large portion of our net worth and think it's an investment.
‘I don’t hide these purchases from my wife’, greatest advice I could possibly give a young car enthusiast 😂 when I came home with a Z06 after I had just bought a ZR1 4 months early my wife didn’t talk to me 2 months… never hiding a purchase from her again 💀

I knew a guy who put a louder aftermarket exhaust on his wife's car - as a birthday present to her. Wasn't a big hit and she made him put it back to stock.
I know a guy who bought a huuuuge TV even after I frantically sent a message through my husband that this was a terrible present for her. It was a terrible present for her. Some men....
This reminds me of a deal I saw while working at a boat shop. Guy came in Saturday and bought a boat. He was so happy and exclaimed how thrilled his wife would be because of how much she loves her bosses boat. (None of us had the heart to tell him). We were closed Sunday and Monday morning I pulled up 3 hours early to get started working overtime, and there he was in front of the gate asking to return it.

Thank you for this video, because all of the other VinWiki videos I’ve watched recently have made me consider trying to flip cars because cars are what I’m passionate about. The way to do it is to tell your wife you bought the car, then after she berates you for a while, cries, says you don't love her, threaten divorce she will calm down. Then you go and buy the car.
My wife doesn't drive, for a couple different reasons, and for the 22 years we've been married I've always been able to buy whatever car I like. But there was one car she adamantly said "no".
