- Vitellia, daughter of the late emperor Vitellio, wants revenge against Tito. She stirs up Tito's vacillating friend Sesto, who is in love with her, to act against him. But when she hears word that Tito has sent Berenice of Cilicia, of whom she was jealous, back to Jerusalem, Vitellia tells Sesto to delay carrying out her wishes, hoping Tito will choose her as his empress. Tito, however, decides to choose Sesto's sister Servilia to be his empress, and orders Annio to bear the message to Servilia. Since Annio and Servilia, unbeknownst to Tito, are in love, this news is very unwelcome to both. Elīna Garanča and Anna Netrebko sing the duet of the young lovers, Servilia and Annio, from Mozart's opera La clemenza di Tito.

In her role as Annio, Elīna Garanča plays a male part in this opera. What is your opinion on choosing a mezzo soprano to portray this character?
Not a very convincing boy, if that's the intent. 🤷♂️
Regardless, her singing is phenomenal.
Perhaps a countertenor would have been a better choice? I'm not sure.
May have been written for a castrato. I have no problem with it. Personally, I don't care for a countertenor's falsetto voice. Annio, is supposed to be young at any rate.
Why do you ask? Trying to get rid of "trouser roles"?😂 If so, a lot of mezzos will be very angry.😂

Yes, indeed. Yet, they are so different. As are their temperaments..
And unlike many "divas", they don't sing against each other, but with each other!
The flower duet
A better duet is very unlikely ( if not impossible) to be heard anywhere when you have 2 brilliant singers like Elina & Anna.. every note was superb!

this got me through the early months of the pandemic; i fell in love with it here and spent several weeks teaching it to myself on the piano. something about listening to this song, a love song, makes me so hopeful.

I've always loved this particular recording of this duet, but was bummed there wasn't a video. A pleasant surprise! It's fascinating watching this out of context of the opera, and how the environment lends itself to mannerisms and silliness that one isn't free to succumb to onstage where you have to act the part, too. Thank you!

Netrebko is a category of her own. It must be difficult for her to control her voice. They match perfectly, but I like Bonney and Garanča duet better.
I totally agree with you. That other duet is sweeter, more tender. Bonney's voice is more rich and she more passionate in this role.

This is really a good performance. But I would very much appreciate it if DG would have paid more attention to the correct presentation of the content. This is an older video production with an aspect ratio of 4: 3. Please upload these older videos in the correct aspect ratio instead of stretching it to 16:9 incorrectly. It looks embarrassing. And the audio of this stereo production is only presented in mono here.
