TIP: For anyone with this kit or similar and is still having issues after wiring it like the video here is a fix. Plug the pins into the connector just as it shows in the video. When you plug the connector into the red part on the ballast just flip them around on both of them. Mine actually had a positive and a negative mark on each one to match them up. So you’ll want the positive side to go into negative slot and the negative side to go into the positive side if that makes sense. Many hours of frustration and this is what finally got mine to work correctly.
No matter what I do to mine they remain dim, they start up really bright then within a second return to a dim state, does this mean my 12v current isn't strong enough?
Just curious why doesn't the passenger Factory harness get used only on the driver side wouldn't that cause a light bulb out warning on some of the newer luxury cars
very useful this video!!!, very accurate with the install using a harness here is a tip that im using on my accord 94, with the harness you have 1 vehicle connection free so what i did was to unify that connection to the high beam bcos im dont like to see any wiring hanging there also, to put into the high beam a capacitor just to have peace of mind, hope this tip like it and well greetings from colombia. :)
Great video, I have a question about the extra wiring from the ballast. If I could put a picture on here I would show you. I have extra wiring for the factory wires. Do I just cut them out or what?
Awesome instructions....my surprise was when I saw the nissan badge...I got a 2011 max and the engine compartment is very similar. Saves me some time figuring out where to wire and how to route it.
Good video sir. People doing installs (plug & play installs) with just the factory stock wiring may end up ruining/overheating the wires cause of what you said...the ballast uses alot of current to start up. And that is why you used relay harness because it uses the right awg. gauge wire for the ballast and it gives it the amount of power it needs to work.
@@galodoidousarenato5504 it should still work. My only opinion though when you connect it direct to the headlight plug, the stock wiring for the bulb may overheat and burn out the wire if the stock fuse does not blow because HID startup uses alot of volts/amperage it says on the ballast. I use a relay for my hid lights because I can hook up a bigger gauge wire to run my hids. The headlight plug runs to a relay, then the relay would switch on and send power from the other wire I use to power my hids. You should check out videos on youtube on how automotive relays work. But without a relay, your hid kit should still work. Just read the instructions...
Hi. Thank you it was very clear nice expression. I have a question. I bought a osram hid kit(new). I tried it by my passat without relay. But it flickers 2 sec. and stops the working. (Both of xenons) I have to make relay connection to fix this problem? right?
Assuming the new HID kit works fine, if you install a relay wiring harness for the HID, then you will be powering the HID directly off the car battery and that should take care of any flickering or turn on issue.
when connecting the wire to the positive terminal am I in any danger of getting shocked or electrocuted, or do i have to disconnect negative first just being safe thank you
I bought A golf plus 2005. Its just failed its annual mot inspection as the law of these HIDs has changed here in the UK. To pass I need to remove the HID conversion back to the original. Any idea how to do this?
Can we use one factory connectors with relay to the headlight and another one factory connector with relay to the fog light ? Thanks you in advance sir🙏
Eric, I bought a relay harness for my light bar. The on/off button switch has a red light for off and a green light for on. When the ignition is off the red off light is lit up. Will this drain my battery? My guess is it's like an alarm led. Love your videos. Thanks for any input
I retrofit my lights on my 2007 Suzuki swift. Stock plugs are h4 and the projectors I retrofit are H1 bulbs. I bought a h4 relay harness, two ballasts and two H1 xenon bulbs. I put everything together and it works fine, except one thing. When I switch on my lights and close them after a while, trying to open them again only drivers headlight came on. If I try on/off several times the passenger side work too. I thought my ballasts are bad and I bought new ones. But still the same. Is that a problem with my relay harness?
Thanks for this video . . shows the wiring harness and relay and what to do with it. But can't help thinking that a set of capacitors and the stock harness . . all plug and play. But thanks for clearing this up for me, appreciated.
if my car has different bulbs for high and low beams, does that mean I need to run two sets of this wire set up for each set of bulbs? also can you confirm that this type of installation with a relay will prevent the computer from being compromised?
Hey I'm wondering the same thing! My dodge chsrger has a high beam bulb an a low beam bulb for each side... does thst mean I have to run the lows with 2 ballasts an a relay harness and 2 more ballasts an a relay harness for the highbeams??? **Enlighten me Please**
Hi, thanks for the video. Recently I just change stock headlight(55w with 15amp fuse) to xenon Hid(55W with stock fuse 15amp), but the xenon manual says a 20amp fuse recommended. Do I really need to upgrade the fuse rate? Thank you.
Saw a post here, someone had both hi/low beams on the factory plug and they wanted to install both but this video was for low beams only. I would think if they wanted hi and low beams, they would need to buy a bi-hid kit for both hi/low beam and for the relay harness it may look alittle different I think, but basically the same thing here in your vid.
i recently added a relay to my HID set up. I noticed that the wire from the battery to relay gets very hot. Is that normal? It seems dangerous to me that it get hot. Any responses would be appreciated.
Where do you buy a replacement for this unit when the bulb breaks. I purchased my Mercedes with the headlights already upgraded an I have no idea where to go to get a replacement bulb.
Out of curiosity and before I get a headache looking at mine (came with absolutely no instructions) on your passenger side, did you still have a male plug that connected to nothing?
With the relay harness that you install for the HID, you only need to connect one side of the headlight connector as that is used as a trigger to turn on the relay. The other headlight connector is not used.
When your hooking up your harness to the nut on your battery you dont need to dissconnect the battery right? I dont want to lose any of my settings in my car? Thanks and great videos!!!
You can also remove the fuse from the power cable on the harness. This way no power is flowing to the relay switch and allows you to secure all wiring connections prior to activating the lights.
Hopefully you or someone reading this can help me with the issue I have right now but basically I was trying to install the hid kit with relay on my car and the passenger side of my hid bulb won't turn on and I couldn't figure out why. It was also making so buzzing noises which supposedly I heard that it wouldn't happen with a relay kit. I don't know if it was due to the fact that the plug that was plugged into the bulb was left hanging, but I only have one signal wire which is connected to the driver side.
I was following the same setup in my Hyundai Venue. But if I connect the battery line then I get a warning in console saying check headlight. If I give the headlamp line directly to relay and then connect relay to ballast, warning does not come. But I now face a new issue, the cut off line seems to be disappeared and the high beam from both lights goes to some top right in a wierd shape, no clue what's going on.
I have 55w currently and i was curious of any type of heat so i had them on for a while just driving around and before i turned me car off, i touched the outside lense and they were cold.
I have a hids for my low beam and they work great. But I tried putting hids on the high beams and don't seem to turn on do I need a relay to start up? Thanks in advance for the help
HID are not ideal for high beam as the warm up time takes too long for real practical use. There are lots of LED lights that performs very well. You should look into those. Also easy install as they are plug and play.
Doesn't the ground go to the ground terminal in the battery or does it matter? I used a ground that was on the side of my engine bay but other videos say to use the batterys ground. Not sure
I just installed my OPT7 Hid Kit to my 2012 ford fusion and both my low beam headlights went I out !! I should have gotten the relay I see why now it's important to have that. hopefully I didn't burn out any wires :/
did you have a actual OEM connector for the ballast? I had my HID kit installed years ago, and cent figure where they plugged the connector into. I been using the fog light connector since.
I have installed x5 can-bus ballast with 35w HID bulb. It is working good only as a head light but i lost my DRL (Day running lights). Will HID works as both head lights and DRL?
+dial2fast one of my friend told me he is using HID as DRl as well as the same HID working as his head light. ( dim light + head light in one HID) thats what i'm confused. Mine is just as head light. When i start the car no lights will work. But in canada its a law to use a DRl in vehicles. I can install an external DRL but I'm confused how his HID working as both DRl and headlight. My HID was flickered when low voltage is supply, so they changed the ballast and installed x5 can-bus with flicker canceller.
+Sutha Tharakan Factory DRL from years ago (non LED) operates by cutting the voltage in half. So it puts 6v on each high beam bulb. That's why it's not full brightness. I am not aware of any ballast that operates at both 6v and 12v. You might want to take a look at your friends car and see what's his setup.
so im ordering aftermarket headlights for my 2002 530i due to a deer hitting and cracking my passenger headlight and the aftermarket I ordered says non compatible with factory HID cars which mine is. Will I be able to make it work?
Yes by installing a different kit. For example i ordered aftermarket headlights also for my car and came with an LED strip inside (which i think it looks cool) but my original HID bulbs did not fit so i had to buy a different set that would fit my aftermarket and it worked.
Hey I’m using HID lights with 55W ballast for my fog light and the fuse keeps on blowing. From my understanding is the during startup the HID draws a high current and will drop back down. So due to the high draw of current it blows my fuse. Therefore in order to rectify this, do you think by using a relay harness with its own fuse that is connected to the battery then to the HID with its 55W ballets will resolve this issue? Thank you.
I am assuming you are referring to the factory headlight fuse blowing. If that is the case, then you should install a relay harness to provide adequate current for the HID ballast.
Your video was very informative, the socket that came with the conversion kit for my 2001 Infiniti I30 fits the high beam, do you know where i might find a similar socket for the low beam?
These are no name brands off eBay for about $26. These are DC ballasts and not as good as AC ballasts. The AC is much better. Relay harness do not come with it. You can find all the these on Ebay with many sellers selling them.
dial2fast I tried to install a relay harness because my car has a delayed start and one headlight would be out sometimes. Nothing happens, nothing would turn on, I put the red on the positive terminal and the black on the negative terminal on the battery. All my plugs were in correct, any thought on why it isn't working?
dial2fast Hey! Was about to install hid lights on my car, but was confused about the two wires of the bulb. Are those two other wires (besides the two you connect to the ballast) that comes along with the bulb useless? If you use relay harness that is...
+Armyboy Check your connections; there are basically five connections; the red connection going from auto positive terminal to relay harness(this also has the inline fuse) @ one minute 22 seconds in presentation; the connection going from Hid relay wire harness to the factory oem original light socket harness @ one minute 27 seconds in presentation; the connection going from Hid relay wire harness to both the Hid ballast to power it and also its ground connection to chassis ground; the connection going from Hid relay wire harness to the other Hid ballast unit to power it and also its accompanying ground connection to chassis ground; then all one has to do is connect ones left/right Hid bulb to the pair Hid amp style connectors to power each Hid light bulbs respectively.
+JiMLiTtLe905 I hate to be that guy because i agree with you i hate those drivers, but in my case i kind of have to. I ordered some smoked headlights and the light output is kind of bad. The glare is also way less than the clear lenses so i feel like i wont be blinding people too bad.
True partially. Do you know that there is cars that come with hid in reflector from factory? Probably you didnt. If the housing has the shield made for it it makes a very good cutoff actually
question yes - the connection made from the kit to the existing wiring harness...can you show that? I have an 03 accord. Is said connection port any different? Thank you!
I'm trying to instal HID for my 2010 corolla High Beam/DRLs...the bulb size is 9005 and as soon as I turn it on....it starts flickering super hard. Do I need to install the relay harness??
+alilazmo Black wire is chassis ground. The battery negative terminal connects to the car chassis. Either connect the black wire to chassis or to the negative terminal on the battery...same thing.
quick question, what the hell is that connector between positive and relay, a fuse? Also, I see that one headlight connector plugs into the relay harness does that mean the other one is inactive/laying around because the one already sends the signal so the second is rendered useless?
Yes it is a fuse. Yes one headlight connector plugs into the relay harness (normally the side closest to the battery) the other one is left unplugged, since it just sends signal from factory harness to relay so you just need to connect one side.
Im a little worried that if a short or ballast goes bad and the fuse blows you are left with no headlights thinking I may put a breaker in place of the fuse
@dial2fast well that's your opinion, when something electrical goes bad there's always a chance of a blown fuse and thus the loss of your headlights, that's why fuses are utilized if a ballast melts then that would be a short circuit , thanks for your input
Hi there. I need your help. I installed HID light on my car with relay harness and canceller but one side still keeps turning off. Please help me try figure out what is wrong? Thanks
Hi, im just a bit confused as to where to plug the yellow plug from the hid bulb itself.... is that to the car headlight itself? because on my car, the whole headlight just have one big headlight plug....
what about the the high beams? if both low and high beams connect to the same harness of the car? only low beams on the relay and high beam on stock harness of the car?
dial2fast so you leave the far-side connection to the car just plugged into nothing? I used your video for my install and everything is working great, but I’m getting a message inside saying a bulb is out because that connector isn’t hooked up to anything.
I have two 10 inch JL audio subwoofers ran by a 1000 watt monoblock JL amp in my truck and whenever I have the bass turned up my head lights flicker and I believe it's because I lack a capacitor between the 4 gauge connection from the battery to the amp. I ordered an opt7 hid conversion kit with 6000k xenon bulbs that I would like to install. This kit came with a relay harness and I was wandering if I actually have to install it because a buddy of mine has the same kit but his didn't come with the relay harness. Will instilling this fix the problem of my headlights flickering?
+Nick Klink Headlight flicker is because your amp is drawing a lot of current when you have the stereo cranked. Using a relay kit for your lights will not fix the flicker. Also you don't have to use a relay for the lights if the factory harness provide enough current.
+dial2fast thank you for your reply, I suspected I didn't need a relay harness as my friend did not need one. Thank you for your input keep making great videos good sir 👍🏼
The relay protects the low voltage side of the circuit (which often runs under the dashboard) by closing a switch (internal to the relay) on the high current side should current get too high.
Sorry the stupid question, but which is the trick to disconnect the headlights conector? I have the manual, also the garage manual, but I don't know where to find this information. Thank you.
So you are using only 1 OEM headlight plug to give a signal to harness relay. The other OEM plug is unused, so you should get an error on the dash that the bulb is gone (from the side the OEM plug is unused). Isn't that right? Or does it throw an error on both sides, because the relay isn't drawing enough amperes from OEM plug and ECU thinks bulbs are gone?
The trigger to the relay is coming from one headlight only. Most Japanese and US cars don't give any headlight errors. I think BMW and Mercedes will. If your car does, then you can try connecting the ballast to the headlight plug (plug and play install) without using the relay. Otherwise, check on the net to see how others are doing it.
dial2fast Yeah, I am using it on BMW X5 2008 model. I used plug and play, getting power straight from both of OEM plugs, but xenons sometimes flicker/flash and one or another switches off randomly. I thought I would overcome this problem by introducing the relay harness, but this will cause another problem. Thanks for a reply.
+djgenius10 You will probably need a heavy duty resistor/capacitor connected parallel with the headlight connection to the relay. This should simulate that halogen bulb is connected and it may be okay. I never done this so I don't know if this will work. Try at your own risk.
Great video. Couple questions. I have concerns about reverse polarity with my HID kit, and I don't have a relay harness at this time. Question is, after I get a relay harness how can I tell if polarity is reversed? I don't want to break anything. Apparently I had it reversed in the past according to an auto electric place, but the bulb worked that way right up until the ballast fried. Second question, does it matter at all if you ground to the chassis or negative terminal? Is one preferred over the other? Third question (sorry!) My battery is in my trunk. The front module does have a big red positive(+) terminal that I believe is intended for things like this, but do you know for sure if that is correct?
+beaker4251 To make sure you install ANY car electronics properly, you must test all connection with a multimeter. Guessing will get you in trouble. My channel has some videos on how to use multimeter, take a look. th-cam.com/video/9IZUvTyOGAk/w-d-xo.html
9 years old and more relevant to me than the OEM white papers. Thank you
This is the best HID kit installation with relay harness that I've seen on TH-cam. Thanks bud!
Many hours of frustration and this is what finally got mine to work correctly.

just the tutorial i needed! can i have the link for the relay you used for your installation? thanks
Chris Biala I bought mine on Ebay. You can just search HID Relay Kit and you will find many.
so im ordering aftermarket headlights for my 2002 530i due to a deer hitting and cracking my passenger headlight and the aftermarket I ordered says non compatible with factory HID cars which mine is. Will I be able to make it work?
Yes by installing a different kit. For example i ordered aftermarket headlights also for my car and came with an LED strip inside (which i think it looks cool) but my original HID bulbs did not fit so i had to buy a different set that would fit my aftermarket and it worked.
I installed my relay and one headlight isn’t turning on do you suspect what the issue can be
Hey I’m using HID lights with 55W ballast for my fog light and the fuse keeps on blowing.
Yes I meant the factory fuse keeps on blowing. Will be install a relay harness. Thank you for your help, greatly appreciated 🙏🏿.
Your video was very informative, the socket that came with the conversion kit for my 2001 Infiniti I30 fits the high beam, do you know where i might find a similar socket for the low beam?
Try Amazon or Ebay
What brand is this HID kit and did it come with the relay harness?? Also where did u get it and how much?? Thanks
You will need a multimeter to check all the connections on the relay and power to the ballast. There is no easy way of figuring these things out.

Hey! Was about to install hid lights on my car, but was confused about the two wires of the bulb. Are those two other wires (besides the two you connect to the ballast) that comes along with the bulb useless? If you use relay harness that is...
+Armyboy Check your connections; there are basically five connections;
the red connection going from auto positive terminal to relay harness(this also has the inline fuse) @ one minute 22 seconds in presentation;
the connection going from Hid relay wire harness to the factory oem original light socket harness @ one minute 27 seconds in presentation;
the connection going from Hid relay wire harness to both the Hid ballast to power it and also its ground connection to chassis ground;
the connection going from Hid relay wire harness to the other Hid ballast unit to power it and also its accompanying ground connection to chassis ground;
then all one has to do is connect ones left/right Hid bulb to the pair Hid amp style connectors to power each Hid light bulbs respectively.
Don't be that guy and install hid's in a reflector housing. Be kind and not cheap and buy projectors. Your not the only one on the road.
Its not that bright without projector. Its not as bad as regular high beams.
it is that bad. any housing made for halogens cant have hids. that includes projectors that came factory with halogens
Make a Casper shield?
Do i need to disconect the positive or just conect the red cable on top ?
Good question
question yes - the connection made from the kit to the existing wiring harness...can you show that? I have an 03 accord. Is said connection port any different?
Thank you!
if I try this bulb and I dont like it can I go back to the original OEM bulb and plug it into the little box connector that came with the other light?
Yes you can revert back to OEM bulb
@@dial2fast I did it and no more trouble with those fan lights
I'm trying to instal HID for my 2010 corolla High Beam/DRLs...the bulb size is 9005 and as soon as I turn it on....it starts flickering super hard. Do I need to install the relay harness??
Question? Why other TH-cam videos showed the relay black wire hooked up to the battery !!
+alilazmo Black wire is chassis ground. The battery negative terminal connects to the car chassis. Either connect the black wire to chassis or to the negative terminal on the battery...same thing.
Where does the neutral come from?
quick question, what the hell is that connector between positive and relay, a fuse? Also, I see that one headlight connector plugs into the relay harness does that mean the other one is inactive/laying around because the one already sends the signal so the second is rendered useless?
Yes it is a fuse. Yes one headlight connector plugs into the relay harness (normally the side closest to the battery) the other one is left unplugged, since it just sends signal from factory harness to relay so you just need to connect one side.
Im a little worried that if a short or ballast goes bad and the fuse blows you are left with no headlights thinking I may put a breaker in place of the fuse
A ballast going bad will not blow the fuse. If the fuse pop, it's because there is a short with the wiring.
@dial2fast well that's your opinion, when something electrical goes bad there's always a chance of a blown fuse and thus the loss of your headlights, that's why fuses are utilized if a ballast melts then that would be a short circuit , thanks for your input
One of the best DIY videos on installing the hid kit!! Great job and keep em coming!!
Can I connect any one of the two factory harnesses to the relay for a signal from the car to turn on? do I leave the another harness unattached?
Jonathan Martinez Yes, use any one side to turn on the relay. The other side, just leave it disconnected.
Thank you!!!
Same
what about the the high beams? if both low and high beams connect to the same harness of the car? only low beams on the relay and high beam on stock harness of the car?
Quick question so u only connect one off the 2 headlight connection to the relay???
Cuz I only see one connection to the stock headlights connection
Yes, the relay harness only has one relay trigger wire.
dial2fast so you leave the far-side connection to the car just plugged into nothing?
+Nick Klink Do the big 3 upgrade and get a second battery. Problem solved
you should of gone with led headlihhts they are a lot easy to install and the flare you don't have to worry about it
Where does the other plug coming off Of the bulb itself go? It looks like another 9006 connector
Did you ever figure that out? Do I just let the male fitting hang there?
Did you ever figure that out? Do I just let the male fitting hang there?
The relay protects the low voltage side of the circuit (which often runs under the dashboard) by closing a switch (internal to the relay) on the high current side should current get too high.
Great and thank you. Now i need to know how to include two cancellers into this mix?
Sorry the stupid question, but which is the trick to disconnect the headlights conector?
I have the manual, also the garage manual, but I don't know where to find this information. Thank you.
Depending on the type you have, many have a plastic push tab on the connector you need to push down and hold while pulling the connector off.
Are they still working? If not how long did they last?
Knight Rider I bought about 10 pairs they no good
vinnkilla Yeah I get it. I'm gonna go with the led headlights. $56 a pair. Worth the price!
For a b2200 the factory harness looks way different then the oval shaped plug on ballast, anyway i can still convert to hid?
Jeff Quinones yes just get the correct wiring harness for your setup
What size fuse did you use?
10A fuse will work fine.
thank you so much, very helpful info
Thanks for your comment!
I have an 03 Ford Taurus I bought a hid kit which is 30000k my stock harness should be fine running the kit correct
any specs or recommendations for the relay harness?
thank you so mach
+dial2fast Thank you so much! I will get a multimeter and check out your videos before I mess around with my HIDs anymore :-)
Dope! Helped me hook my headlights up.. 💯
