I mean Nick is right.... I've never heard anyone bring up how many games were in the season in previous record breaks.... if we throw an asterisk on Mahomes we'd have to throw one up on all of them
The difference is Manning would hold the record at each point in the season. If it was 12 games or 14 games he would have held the record. Not to mention they had such big leads he sat a lot of 4 quarters that season.
All sports stats and records should be considered by era. Give the guys the all-time, but also break down via era.

We do for many records. Patriots went undefeated for longer than the 72 Dolphins. They were 18-0 before losing the SB, while the Dolphins only went 16-0.
We also give OJ credit for the rushing record all the time. Even Nick knew to bring it up for a reason... because 2,000+ yards in 14 games is way more impressive than 2,000 yards in 16 games.
If Mahomes breaks the record, nobody can take that way from him. But people won't consider it as the pinnacle or even as impressive as other seasons he's had. He'll get his props, but we'll all know it's not the same.
Idk what more Mahomes gotta do, he's literally averaging 320 passing yards per game after losing his best wide reciever

I’m a Hawkeye fan so I have a deep hatred for purdy. But I am a bills fan so I also have deep hatred for nick
Y'know what, I just realized what a niners vs chiefs matchup reminds me of: the 2017 super bowl between the eagles and the Patriots. One team is an absolutely loaded roster with a backup QB, and the other has a generational QB, a number one te, and not much else. So the blueprint IS there for the upset.
I see it as Chiefs vs Pats kind of, Purdy the young star QB and Mahomes the big bad reaper
But you forgot that on the Patriots team the coach benched their star cornerback (he played more snaps than anybody else on the defense I doubt Andy Reid would do something that's stupid)
The 49ers need to get to the Superbowl first. And history says no rookie will play in the Superbowl. The Eagles will be there. Hurts play’s tomorrow and goes on to win. With first play they win out like 2017 and then wins the Superbowl!
But Purdy is more like a healthy Jimmy G on Jimmy’s good days. His stats are no where close to Mahomes.

You can argue what's more impressive (Nick made a good case a couple of weeks back that while Wilt holds the single game record for points, Kobe's 81 point game is more impressive) but we've never put asterisks on anything in sports so why would we start now?

Also, passing yards records should be looked at in terms of completions/attempts.
People just like to have MOST in the record books. It’s fun to reflect on and talk about. It is not a descriptor of the best ever. It’s just a nice accolade.
Few people think that Emmitt is the GOAT RB even though he holds the career carry, rushing yardage and rushing TD records.

I’d slot Jim Brown, OJ Simpson, Eric Dickerson and Walter Payton ahead of Emmitt…maybe Ladanian Tomlinson and that’s it. Honorable mention to Priest Holmes and Jamaal Charles if they weren’t injured. Just check the Cowboys 1993 season when EM held out and you’ll realize he was more than just the Dallas offensive line.
@@swpdisciple The issue with talking about best anything over a career is that you start talking about very specific circumstances and you have to take into account that longevity and consistency also matter. Barry Sanders was electric when he played. If he played on a better team, he may have continued playing longer but it’s impossible to say if he would’ve rushed for more or fewer yards per season.

I think what Nick fails to understand is the wording of the comment. Steve Young isn't saying he's as physically gifted or as accomplished. What he's saying is about Brocks ability under pressure and to make plays when things break down.
Nick’s technically right about the records. Of course Mangina didn’t suggest putting an asterisk on Tommy Terrific’s records, right? All time TD leader? Needed two extra seasons over Manning to get there. But again, Nick’s right-it’s Mahomes slander, trying to diminish him some more.

All the ESPN talk shows needed to fill some air time with these Steve Young comments. Every talk show has this same topic. All Steve said was they were both calm when they started their careers and the moment wasn’t too big for Purdy. He said nothing comparing his skill set nor was he implying in any way that Purdy could be as good as Mahomes.
That’s absolutely ridiculous to compare the two. It’s just disrespectful to Mahomes.
If Mahomes rookie year that he played one game didnt count against him he would hold every record for a QB through the first few seasons.

Wow Nick actually made sense 😂 He’s correct, the single season records don’t take into account the additional games and thus is disrespectful to the real all-time greats.
The NFL went to 16 games in 1978. The passing record at that time was 4007 yards by Joe Namath. Peyton’s record is 5477, which puts his per game yards FAR above Namath’s, meaning the number of games doesn’t matter. More people consider OJ’s 1973 season to be better than Dickerson’s 1984 season because of the number of games. Mahomes shouldn’t be treated any differently.
The game differential should absolutely be acknowledged… but the record is the record. Jim Brown has 2 seasons that would have been over 2000 yards in a 16 game season. He dosent actually have a 2000 yard season, so it is what it is… but the point should still be understood that he is in the mix with the 2000 yard club. Same with Payton.
So Moss has the season TD record, it’s just a fact. However, Rice’s accomplishment has to be recognized during the “all-time” conversations.
I mean seriously… Nick is spot on with this argument. Such a huge double standard for Mangini to claim the current record holders should be seen as the record holders when they all got their records by accumulating stats in more games than the previous record holders had.

I think the playoff are just kept as a separate stat to differentiate the all time playoff performers.
I agree that a comparison is totally unnecessary. It is a disservice to both qb’s. Both qb’s will be facing some of the same teams they’ve seen before. But the volume is going to be amped up in the playoffs. That’s where I find the comparison to be especially meaningless.
Please adjust the volume higher. Love your various show contents. Keep it up. (Just louder, please)

Playoffs every year but his rookie season, putting up 40 TDs, 4000+ yards, 700+ rushing yards, #2 or 3 in QBR, #1 seed, etc. I mean how is that comparable to Davis Mills unless you want to cherry pick stats?

Unfair to Purdy is one thing but to say it's impossible is equally as dumb.
Patrick Mahomes , Jared Goff, and Baker Mayfield were all first round picks. Patrick and Baker played one of the Greatest College Football games of all time in 2016 . A total of 819 yards on offense with 734 coming through the air, on 88 passing attempts. In 2018 Jared and Patrick played the Rams won 54 to 51 KC had 546 yards to the Rams 455 but turned the Ball over 5 times. That's 105 points and just over 1000 yards of offense. To compare the last person taken in the NFL draft in 2022 after four games to Patrick who has both in College and his Pro career has played at a phenomenal level. Brock Purdy has some talent but he is on a Very good team but is no Patrick Mahomes by any means.
It sounds like he is a Mahomes fanboy. No, Peyton’s record doesn’t have to have an asterisk because he threw for over 1400 yards more than the 14-game-season record. You know about OJ’s yards in 1974 because there is an inherent asterisk in Dickerson’s record. When somebody passes OJ by enough to beat him per game, that will be considered the asterisk-free record, the same goes for Peyton’s record.

I'm a die hard Niners fan. Love Steve Young, not nearly as much as Montana, but Young is incredible. However, Purdy ain't no Mahomes. Their games are not even similar.
The only quarterback to compare Mahomes to is Joe Burrow.
The record will be the record, the only time the number of games should be considered is in discussion when things like HOF or best ever at something come up, then it is fair to say yes but player X achieved is record in Y number more games & it was smaller average per game
I'm a Chiefs fan and a KC native and there's nothing wrong with the comparison. Purdy looks great rn and these questions will continue if they meet in the Superbowl. Chiefs might make it though the AFC is wild right now and we got some stellar competition in our way. But SF is definitely making the Superbowl. That's the best team in the NFC by a large margin and Purdy deserves a ton of credit.
It is a little easier on rookie and back up QB's rn with all these teams running Fangio's defense. It leaves little space for anything deep but sacrifices essentially everything within 10 yards and that's the only thing ever asked of back up QB's. But Purdy is better than they expected. Great decision making and he's one of few QB's that are great at taking advantage of the deep ball when they let him.
I think we'll start to see a lot of rookies and back ups do well over the next few seasons. Little Brockoli is on the level though. Not Mahomes level cause no one is but he's for real

Why do season records count when 12 games season we’re played. Nick on point with games played & average like NBA most appropriate 12 games minimum seems fair.
Highest career average game 104 Jim Brown career, 100 yds Sanders, Davis 97, Dickerson 90. Davis played 6 years so at least 9 seasons needed. Payton 89, Portis 88, Martin 84, OJ 83, Edgerin 83, Campbell 82, Smith 81. Doing first 9 season best because older RBs disadvantaged like Smith 14 years run.
Same for regular season records Now for real record single season OJ 143 rush/game, Brown 133, Payton 132, Dickerson 132, AP 132, OJ 130, Lewis 129, Campbell 129, Sanders 128 & Brown 127. Notice no outliers maybe league doesn’t want to remember OJ for obvious reasons.
Purdy is decent, he is NOT Mahomes, he have the NFL No.1 Defense and a top flight run game and receiver, put him on the Texans or Bears and see how good he is

People need to be honest about the context of said comparison. Young never compared Purdy to Mahomes as a player in terms of arm strength, stat, mobility. he was simply talkng about his poise in the pocket.
