    I think Slavic people come across as quiet and stoic which many people percieve as being unfriendly but start up a conversation with one and you will be pleasantly surprised by their friendly nature.

      Slavs are great people. Funny & open-hearted. All this image you describe is portrayed in Hollywood movies. Because mostly in the '90s (and the early 2000s or, heck, even still today!) it was "chic" to place Slavs playing the villains. That is a stereotype that planned to people's brain mostly through movies. #TrueStory Greetings from Greece.

    • @Ajoura
      @Ajoura 5 ปีที่แล้ว +77

      That's an absolutely accurate depiction of Slavs. There's a widespread Russian proverb that's used in most of the Russian-speaking Slavic countries: "A laugh with no reason is a sign of a moron". We only smile for people who we consider friends.
      Also, the problem is not about people being poor, corrupt, angry, blue-skinned or having three legs. It's just most of the countries mentioned above have very harsh climate and an ambiguous weather with harsh upper and lower limits. Such climate is present throughout most of the year and it's not a pretty sight to see.
      These two reasons may be the main part of Slavic image of an eternally angry face. Yet we have to have fun at this climate, that's why, indeed, when you get to know us better, we open up widely and engage in crazy activities.

    In the 80-s, so-called "комплексный обед" (fixed-menu lunch) in Belarusian restaurants and cafes was abt. 1 soviet ruble during the weekdays. The meal was very delicious and cheap, provided that making the same meal at home would cost abt. 30% more. In fact, restaurants and cafes did not make any money on those lunches. They were subsidized by the government.

    I'm from the UK and have been living in Bulgaria for a year. Many people in the West believe Eastern Europeans to be rude, but they are not at all. They are direct and truthful, unlike in the West where people are so friendly to your face but are completely the opposite when your back is turned. People here will genuinely go out of their way to help you, and I appreciate so much knowing where you actually stand. It has certainly opened my eyes!

      Borscht is red because of beetroots. If you want blood, however, you can have *czernina* (pronounced roughly cherneena). Name comes from czarny, meaning black, (also known as czarna polewka - black soup) is a Polish soup made of duck blood and clear poultry broth. In the older times it was given to the guy asking the parents of a girl for a permission to marry their daughter. If you got that soup - you got rejected. There are some other interpretations of this tradition, but that's the most common one.

      90s until early 2000s McDonald's here in the Philippines had bathroom tiles for walls. The last one of those old designed branches closed just this December 2019, I think it was one of the first in the country too but the mall it was in was bought and renovated to be an bigger mall. I don't know if design among Mc D's are the same all over the world for a particular time but the McDonald's I've seen in Saudi and all over Asian countries we visited were different from ours during our travels during that time.

I haven't seen them for years, you cant buy them in the shops as far as I know. I used to enjoy them as a child, we are talking early 1960s. I think it was a way of dealing with the poorer cuts of meat, she used to mince the meat herself with a hand mincer. Very interesting videos, one thing that has surprised me is that Belarus looks really clean, the 'canteen' although fairly basic looked spotless, and so do the surroundings.
