  • This shows how we build custom handmade wall scrolls in our workshop in Beijing, China. It shows how we use traditional and modern materials and techniques to produce a high-quality product.
It takes about 3 man-hours of preparation and work to create a wall scroll. We condensed this down to about 27 minutes.

No kidding about them lasting ten years or more. I bought mine from you in 2004 and it still looks great and it has been hanging almost without break for the last ten years!

Gary, Thanks for showing us the craftsmanship that goes into your scrolls. I first discovered your site about a year or two ago thanks to this videos predecessor.

Really cool to watch the process Gary... It makes the scrolls we receive all that much more personal and gives me at least more of a feeling that I have a really custom piece of artwork. Great stuff!!

I totally appreciate all the craft and hard work going to this wall scroll, but I have purchased a wall scroll and when I receive it what can I do to make sure it is properly preserved to display?

Uuhhh... scary... laying the iron-ruler with the edge onto the art work ... delicate xuan paper... phew... lucky this time..

It depends on the quality of the xuan paper. Sometimes we use a protective film/sheet if the xuan is of low quality or delicate for some other reason. Also, lower heat for the face of the artwork and we tread lightly. Been doing it for 16 years, and I have not scorched any xuan paper yet. The dangerous part is the chance of smearing the read stamp (which is more or less red clay and oil). If you heat that up, it gets soft and wants to smear if it's fresh.
