    I've been using the ATAKA 5 for about 3 years now as my only ruck. I don't use it daily, probably 1x/month on average for a few days in a row. I have been in/out of vehicles dozens of times with it and have used it extensively at night moving through thick brush with NODs. I have never had the QD straps release on me, but you're the second person I've heard of this happening to on an ATAKA pack. The pack does have a couple spots for your E-tool, there are gaps between the side pouches and main compartment for putting long tools in. The main issue I ran into with that was the shovel blade catches on the ruck lid when I'm trying to close it sometimes. I agree that the proportions of the sleeping bag compartment are very bad. I put my winter sleep system and layers in the main compartment and put mess kit, food, extra water, etc. in the "sleeping bag" compartment. In the summer I do the opposite. Overall, I love the ruck and I've been through miles of prickers/thorns and brush and the pack has not had one stitch come close to lose. It's been thrown from moving vehicles, fallen onto with full combat loads, dropped, kicked, spray painted, completely soaked, punched (in frustration as sleep system wasn't fitting), dragged across pavement and forest floor, etc. But it still keeps going like nothing happened. But now you have me looking at the WAS X300. Maybe it's time I retire this ATAKA ruck. I'll be sad to see it go....

    One of the reasons I think the Soviets/Russians got their “shovel” right is in the wooden handle. It’s removable… if you really need to save weight and are going into a wooded region (where a replacement is available) you can just carry the head. Also nothing can break as it’s just a single piece of steel. If the handle breaks it’s easily replaced. Good design.

    • @radfoxuk8113
      @radfoxuk8113 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      Eh, I kinda prefer the metal shank/shaft ones, cause almost any war is gonna have mechanics, and a lot of mechanics will be welding shit together or cutting shit apart, so a fix isn't that far away. Cutting down a length of wood, leaves evidence of your presence, which you may not want, it takes time, and you will very likely be exposing yourself, when acquiring the wood.
      With all the drones and thermals around, I definitely wouldn't want to expose myself more than is 100% necessary.
      And worst case, you can always do a field repair, by snapping the tubular shaft and forcing in a wood length, or bolting a wooden length to the head of the tool, which can be easily done by the in field maintenance/logistics guys, same ones who do weapon maintenance and repair close to the front.
      But that's just opinion.

    • @jastrapper190
      @jastrapper190 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@radfoxuk8113 using an entrenching tool leaves evidence of your presence. If you’re using a shovel to dig… I reckon in a pinch you can go grab a tree branch for a new handle. 99% of the time you’re using it to dig… you’re not under threat of direct fire (artillery, drones, small arms, etc). And that’s the strength. In the wilderness or on whatever operation you’re on… you don’t have to wait for a welder. You just go grab a suitable piece of wood. And if you wanna save weight and space… you just grab the wood when it’s needed. Wood for handles is cheaper, lighter, and also much easier on the hands (it’s why the material has been used for hundreds of years for tool handles). Wood doesn’t conduct heat like metal and doesn’t blister skin as readily as steel or iron or transmit shock as readily from striking or impacts.
      The reality is 99% of the time you’re going to be carrying it with a handle already attached and it’s not going to break. If that’s true… I prefer the lighter weight, cheaper, easily replaceable, easier on the hands… wood.
      That’s my opinion.

      @ OR that moment when your shovel breaks and you’re forced to dig with your canteen cup… or go grab any stick and spend 2 minutes whittling it so it’ll fit in the end of your shovel and be functional again. Let’s compare the time taken with a broken shovel/canteen cup… vs repairing with a stick.

      Nato ones fold Into shapes as well as extended, you can adopt the kneeling with it in pick mode and chip out a decent little scrape in ten to fifteen minutes and carve out some decent semi-permanent OP in a few hours with a team of you, situation dependent, I think the shape really helps with this compared to traditional long shovels.

    When I used aa back pack for college, I soldered together a copper pipe frame, was great, a full frame, so I could put very heavy items in without risk of them tearing their way out the bottom, just added a little plywood floor as needed, put in a foam panel used for repairing a chair, into the laptop/hydration pack pouch, it added it's own weight, but the comfort of lugging round textbooks and such, was great, especially when I went onto plumbing, and was taking round my own tools to classes.
    I used some 550 paracord, and a pull through bight/knot, a bit of sewing, and made my own quick release, wasn't great, but doing a double bight/knot, meant it never released on its own, a couple times the first bight got released, but the second one held it while I reset the first bight.
    What I like a lot is how even Chinese copies now use fabrics/materials that don't glowie, well a lot of them do, in fact in a lot of cases the main difference is fire, if it burns or melts.
    Thank you for the video.

    2:08 got me thinking of a question that isn't directly related to the video... how long does it take for a single man to dig a foxhole that he can sit down in? How long does it take for a small group (3-5 men lets say) to dig a simple slit trench? How long to dig a bigger trench with dugouts and such? Of course it varies depending on soil quality and other factors but generally how long does it take?

      An interesting way to create a hole in frozen ground as told to 101st Paratroopers at Bastogne by a British SOE trained man. Shoot the frozen ground with your Webley (British remember so 6 rounds) and scoop out the now loose frozen lumps. Place half a stick of dynamite or similar 💥stuff into the now excavated hole ignite fuse and take cover. Wait for 💥and excavate your _instant effort free_ now man sized "foxhole." 👍
      I believe this was mentioned in the Band of Brothers book Ambrose wrote about Easy Company but don't remember if it was told to them directly or another Company/Platoon.

    Excellent video as always! I always wondered what those attachment points below the side pockets were for.
    I tried to like the Ataka-2, but even just for civilian use it's a terrible backpack. The metal hardware on mine was so bad and made it almost impossible to adjust the harness while in use. I've used my ALICE pack extensively with the same style of hardware with really no issues. You can say the SSO hardware at least didn't slip, but I had to take the whole thing off to make almost any adjustment.
    I'm not sure if you've seen it, but Techinkom makes a similar capacity backpack (kind of like a bigger version of the common 6sh117 25L Ratnik patrol pack). It's still not perfect, but after some easy modifications it carried so much better than the Ataka-2.

That extreme cold weather bag will keep you warm and comfy in some extremely cold climates, and its full of down feathers so its super thick and has lots of paddiing. Only downside is its huge and weighs like 15 lbs on its own lol The extreme cold weather gloves/mits are really cool too.

      Of course depend on you work, but for infantry working in the very front positions pretty much every time rotating in and out, batteries, water food ammo, the tendency is to use only smaller rucks for quicker in and out and do resupply by drones, but all that is place and situation dependant

    Valgear, as a collector I would be very happy to purchase some if not all of your collection. If you comment back on this video we can find a way to exchange information so that when you are ready you can contact me. If you intend to do the sale through some other avenue I of course understand that as well. Love your content, stay safe!
