Absolutely gutted about the death of John Renbourn. One of the best technical, classical, blues, medieval guitar players and songwriters ever to walk this earth. I was lucky enough to see him live in 2012 at the Mac theatre in Birmingham, right at the front, row A. (I filmed it) ... Blew me away ! RIP to a legend!
Her voice was all about purity and an almost emotionless form of singing in Pentangle. As if she were another instrument. Her voice has deepened and she imparts more feeling into her interpretation. Both styles are wonderful. It's wonderful to see how she's transitioned. He, as always plays guitar, brilliantly. Thanks for posting this.
Beautiful. Saw Jacqui this year and she was spell binding. I was to see Bert in Glasgow last year...he never made the gig. Adore and miss him in equal measure. Like Bert, the absolute genuine article and genius.
This video inspired me to learn this. I can't play all of the middle section solo's, and I can't play any of it anywhere near as well as John played it, but it is such a beautiful piece I will forever strive to play it like this.
@@woodyguthriefan1 th-cam.com/video/XgdRxel_lus/w-d-xo.html I can play it better now, although still not quite Mr renbourn yet lol, and never will be !
@wingandaprayer "deceptively simple"... right... Man, you are a *master* of understatement. Back when I thought I could play guitar, I tried to play some of Renbourn's stuff, just like I tried to play some of Fahey's. I finally quit, and spent my time doing something I was actually good at. I was a lot happier after that.
Re: "blues solo, & purity..." it's an old St Helena Island (South Carolina) spiritual, collected and published in England in the twenties. Pentangle did their version of it and thus brought it back to life. Iprobably no one does it as it was done by the escaped slaves, who originally performed it. These folks do a fine version.
@jwpretd thanks...I have won many prizes for my understatements.[and yes, thats we folks in Scotland call irony!]..!...however, youve hit on the key to being a contented and hopefully, an interesting, player...dont try to copy, take out the heart and bones then make it your own.. John wont mind, thats what he and every other musician worth their salt has been doing, forever..
her voice was controlled emotion in the old days. she tried to sing in the style of a medievel troubadour of which the lyric was the most salient feature of a song and showy emotions were not suppose to overtake the lyric and melody thus causing an entrancement.
Disagree with that...its not really a solo...but a lovely extension of the song which doesnt jangle when her voice comes back in...he is one of the finest acoustic folk guitarists of his generation...complex and technically perfect without being flash...deceptively simple....but maybe us guitarists just want to hear more playing!
I was lucky enough to see these two play together,
His right hand stays loose through the whole song. You were so good, John. RIP Legend ❤️🙏

Pure genius and exquisite.
Δύο ιδιαίτερα αγαπημένοι άνθρωποι! Ο John είναι αξέχαστος!
As a guitarist I am in awe of Renbourn's right hand. Look how relaxed it is. Wish I could do that.
Lovely to hear two legends of English folk music together.
Jaquie's voice has always been perfection. John is just a legend.awesome.
Rest In Peace John Renbourn.
ξεχωριστό, ξεχωριστοί και οι δύο!
Absolutely beautiful. This was always my favorite Pentangle song. Jaqui sounds even better now. And John is still phenomenal.

the lyrics, voice and guitar are pure magic !!

I love this video, both John and Jacqui look and sound great, thanks for posting, brilliant!
This sounds as fine as the 70s recording of the same piece of music, I believe it was Pentangle with both of these perfectionists. fantastic.

How did you go? :-)

Still love the song as much as when I first heard it 🙂
Magnificent - just as you'd expect!

Love JR's subtle inflections and nuances...the main man imo...

SWEET.

Renbourn is hard to top as a fingerpicker...

Oops. Jacqui. Sorry!
This moves me and lifts my spirits every time. So nice to have it still here for the world to find.
