It’s a gourgeous song isn’t it. Always a favourite of mine. He is such a lovely songwriter. The Finn Brothers are equal to anything in the world. And then Paul Kelly 2 legends together. So simply done and so beautiful.

Neil and Tim Finn have written a whole raft of brilliant songs over the years. Neil's sons play with his band Crowded House these days. He's a class act; incredibly talented but zero ego. Loved the harmonica in the performance with Paul Kelly. What a treat to have two master songwriters from the Antipodes sharing the stage!

This is an excellent recording of a live version, but, again, this is a song of which the studio version needs to be heard. It's so haunting, moody, absorbing, so beautifully produced.

Omg I can’t believe you picked this one today 😆 I was in the supermarket this afternoon and they were playing “Into Temptation” on the instore music 😮 I was actually wondering at the time what today’s song might be - this is too much 😂.
Always loved this one, best I ever heard it was in the State Theatre Sydney 1988. What an incredible show that was. Love the version with Paul Kelly too 🙌
I remember seeing a comment the other day that it would be unthinkable not to include “Message to My Girl” - just warning there may be a riot here if it’s not on the list - but a good excuse for week 2 😆💕💐

I think you’ve seriously misunderstood the development of Split Enz. They started as a band in about 1972, whilst they were students at art college. Changes in music style and band mebets ensued, but they built up a small following. In 1974, they moved to Australia, where the record labels were, and found it a struggle against the Aussie pub rock. Michael Gudinski did sign them tho, paid for a 1st album and then sent them to London where a second album was recorded. Their quirky punk wasn’t as popular as the gritty British version. They returned to NZ, a couple of members left and Neil joined. Their first hits in Australasia came in 1977; they were written by Tim Finn and were still quirky. Their success came when New Wave started; “I See Red”, written by Tim Finn, was a big hit. Neil started contributing more after being a band member for several years, and the rest is history.
Frankly, you could easily do a Tim Finn (Split Enz and solo) week; he’s written some real doozies.

Gentlemen. About Split Enz. True Colours (1980) is their best selling album but it only has three Neil Finn songs on it. That said, his older brother Tim was a genius songwriter in his own right too. You should check out his work as well. I think you should go for Time And Tide (1982) to start with. It's artistically their most elaborated album, a cohesive band effort with five real gems by Neil, five by Tim, one intro by keyboard player Eddie Rayner and one band effort. Actually Neil en Tim never really worked together on songs before the Woodface (1991) album when Tim joined Crowded House briefly. Thank you both for this beautiful Finn week.

Neil Finn produced about thirty songs genuinely as good as this one (their quality is amazingly consistent).
When he was in the solo stage of his career, a time when he experienced the inevitable decline in the powers that every great song-writer suffers, he was asked what In his opinion was his best song. Predictable he said "Don't Dream it's Over" - a real classic in popular music, but he also quickly added "Not the Girl You Think You Are." It is an interesting situation with this particular song because it came right at the end of Crowded House's time and wasn't on a studio album, and consequently I don't think it got radio play in Australia. For that reason I sense that it is very little known among people who know all the other Crowded House songs. (Despite it obviously being in a John Lennon style I think that Finn remarkably wasn't conscious of that when he created it)
Crowded House was definitely a vehicle for the talents of Neil Finn. That said, the band did have a George Harrison in drummer Paul Hester. He usually had one song written and sung by him on the Crowded House albums. Although not bad, his songs did struggle when compared to even Finn's worse. (He was a complex character, a real clown who in the end took his own life)

That's one thing I've been thinking about listening to these songs. Neil Finn has to have top-notch musicians around to make this stuff sound good. A good solid drummer with people around that drummer who can weave in and out.

This was released in 1989. Between Neil and producer Mitchell Froom, they did more than any other act to bring back the sounds of the Mellotron, the great analogue sample playback keyboard that became the sound of Progressive Rock, most popular from the late 60s to the mid 70s. The Mellotron was magic in your ears.

Split Enz? Start with Mental Notes.....their first album, it's quite progressive but brilliant, some say the music is inspired by Genesis. Tim Finn and Phil Judd were the main song writers at this point. For Neil Finn's influence on the band, check 'True Colours', Neil's second Enz album and the band's fifth and the one where Neil's song writing really came to the fore. This album set them on the road to stardom. BTW, as for this song, Into Temptation, the studio/album version beats both these by a long way. Sometimes live is not better. You guys are obsessed with live....it's not always better.😉

YES - love Monkey Magic. Was on TV when we got off the school bus at 5pm on the farm. On the weekend we would ride pushbikes to each others farms to hit each other with sticks we painted black and gold. As for crowded house - I would buy albums for my sisters then copy then onto cassette for me, never owned any of their albums myself until I bought the tribute albums performed by Kiwi and Aus artists 'They will have their way'. Looking at the song lists I only knew half the songs - turned out I could sing along with all of them. Thats how interwoven with daily life the Finn brothers had become for me in Australia.

Ahhh, I loved your intro. I think you might have shown me the source of my fascination for Japanese culture by reminding me of Monkey (and, you probably won't know it, but Ultraman as well).
Anyway, we won't dwell on that.
Into Temptation is a beautifully written song. Forget the music for a moment and pull up the lyrics. I truly forgot how good these lyrics are. Honestly, you could drop almost any melodic acoustic guitar line behind these lyrics, and you could enthrall the audience. Georgous.
Bonus Video: Paul Kelly and Neil Finn, it probably couldn't get much better ... could it? I doubt it.
Chris the Curator, have started my Paul Kelly education early? I wasn't expecting such an amazing pairing. I can imagine Ross and you working this week up ... just another great collaboration.
Back to the real stuff, Neil was amazingly generous to allow Paul Kelly to take the lead vocal. I have never met either of them, but I feel they would both be incredibly humble. Perhaps their down to Earth personas allow them both to capture the hearts of Australia (and beyond). Neil and Paul killed this.
One more night? awesome. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.

It may have been my idea to put the Paul Kelly performance in, with the reciprocal Neil Finn performance in Paul Kelly week...or it may have been Ross. He has pulled out some genius choices either way!

@@christhecurator It doesn't matter how it gets here, as long as it gets here.
Conversations and concession make the world go round. All that matters is the end result. And this was a wonderful double shot. Great stuff.
I love how you guys haven't gone for the one-week reaction. Neil Finn has so much more. I can't wait to see what is next.
Paul Kelly, I know, but I probably don't understand enough. I am looking forward to deepening my knowledge.
