Austin was like “I’m exhuming a baby from its grave” nobody bats an eye but Emily writes beautiful words on a page and her dad throws a fit and slaps her for it. I CANNOT
I teared up the first time I saw this episode. Hailee’s performance was incredible, the way she broke just when Sue came to see her shows how vulnerable she can with her. It’s heartbreaking and yet so powerful
This ep always fucks me up. Incredibly written, incredibly performed. It's by far (for me anyways) one of Hailee's best performances throughout the entire series. The final shot of her is just absolutely heartbreaking and STUNNING.
i love the scene where Emily lost herself and retreats to the dark depths of her mind and sue bringing her back, her voice, her light (represented by a candle) towards the present, making it the most powerful scene in the whole series
There are a quite a few scenes throughout Dickinson that really showcase Hailee’s acting ability. “I went to the circus” to me is second only to a particular one in 3x8 (without spoiling). Loving reliving this beautiful journey with you Adam!
Adam, yes he is gay in episode before when Emily and Ben are sitting outside , Emily says “I’m a freak, Ben tells her “then I’m a freak too” he tells her he wears a ring to keep people from trying to set him up , and all the questions people ask , if a man’s in his 30’s and not married. He wears the ring to stop the questions. So he tells Emily he’s like her. He knows she is in love with Sue. He says he’s actually attracted to Austin. The circus is in her mind , to escape the reality of what happened. That scene is too hard to watch again.
So glad to see you going through this journey -- since the show just ended, I was suffering from Dickinson withdrawal, so this is a great way for me to experience it all again.
I truly believed that Adam would just guess that Ben was also queer in like half a second. This was fun. Lol. The circus scene was one of the peak scenes of this entire show for me, honestly!
Hi everyone! You have no idea of how important these vids are for me. Like, I live my week just for them. So, episode 7... I was kinda dreading it for there are many things to say about it, but now that I'm about to do it I'm actually excited. I'd like to start with Edward and his political career: he went from being part of the Massachusetts House of Representatives to being elected as member of the Whigs at the United States Congress and then back again from where he started. What a journey, right? Well, in the end it seems that this kind of life was too much for him, because he died while being involved in the House of Representatives activities. His wife never recovered from his loss. I think we should leave sad themes for later though and move to something better, wouldn't you agree? So, have you noticed that, before meeting Maggie, Edward and his friend walk through a corridor? Well, that's what Emily's niece later defined the Northwest Passage and there it is believed that Emily and Sue would meet, when they had little time or desired more privacy to talk. This is actually one of the cutest thing I've learned about them. I've just realised something unforgivable: I haven't said a single thing about Maggie. I'm speechless. How could I forget my baby? So, Margaret "Maggie" Maher... this woman was so trusted by Emily that she hid her poems in her trunk. But that's not all. Emily trusted Maggie with other things (we'll go back to them later in season 2), because she knew Maggie was extremely loyal. So loyal that, when Lavinia messed up and ended in a trial against Austin's lover, Maggie testified in her favour by revealing to the lawyers that Mabel Loomis Todd had really slept several times with Lavinia's brother. Moving to Emily and getting her poems published. Did you know that she actually didn't want to have them printed? We know this, because someone (Sue probably) submitted one of her poems anonymously to a newspaper and Emily wrote to a friend (I won't say who... we'll meet him though) that she was, long story short, upset of how her work had been modified to be suitable to meet readers' standards. Marta Nell Smith (a Dickinson expert) has pointed out that, to traditional publication, Emily probably preferred to have her poems shared with friends and family members, so that she could still have them written and read as intended. Fun fact, since that we've just mentioned Austin: yes, he did move a baby's grave so that Sue could be buried beside him. Also, while this episode's poem ("Nobody knows this little Rose") wasn't about Sue, Emily had every right to be mad at him, because, without even wanting to, her brother stole one of the symbols she associated with her beloved (along with the pearl, the lily and so many others). Ok, here comes the worst part of what I have to say today. I wrote I'd leave the sad things for later and later is now, I'm afraid. If some scholars are right, Edward slapping Emily is accurate. If some others are also right (and I truly hope they're not), her father might've done to her even worse in real life. BUT (and this must be clear) these are all speculations made by literature and psychology scholars, so, although thought through, there's nothing certain about whether Edward Dickinson was in any way abusive towards Emily. From what I've read, both in Emily's work and in articles written by psychologists, there are some creepy references to something terrible having happened to her, like the ones you can find in "The first Day's Night had come-" or "Rearrange a Wife's Affection" (I'm putting them here so you can give them your own interpretation). I think it's interesting to talk about this horrible possibility even in the universe of the tv show, 'cause Emily tends to dissociate often from reality and this is, in many cases, a way to face trauma when it's too hard to bear. I swear I'm done with bad things about Emily's life... for now, at least. One last thing (and this is especially for Adam): since you like Hailee with those tattoos so much (I do too, btw), I'm here to tell you that you can find a gorgeous bts pic of her with them on in her Instagram. See you next week, Martina.
Every time I read your comments I'm like "I wish I could grab coffee with this girl and talk about all this freak stuff in person". Seriously, reading you after watching Adam is probably the best thing in my week. Thank you so much for sharing all this knowledge.

This show is just incredible, as someone who writes poetry myself, I always rewatch this show whenever I hit a wall. Something about the incredible poetry and the story it present is just completely art inspiring.
This show always shocks me. The way they do magic in 30 min episode, and the way they tell a story just by putting us to think underneath of what we are seeing. It´s a masterpiece! And the whole cast is spetacular! Hailee, omg, i just can´t, she is too perfect for this role.
This episode made me tear up the first time I watched it. Hailee was born the year I graduated high school (☠️) but has the acting skills of someone years older. She is perfect in every scene, and she and Ella are magic.
At first viewing I was just as angry as you Adam when MR D slapped Emily, but your reaction was so strong, I actually shed tears too. The series is so beautiful yet many times very painful to watch because of the love between Emily and Sue. At the end of the day, they are deeply in love and can't live without each other.
Another outstanding episode, and one of the most powerful. The circus scene always gives me goosebumps! And Hailee is just phenomenal. Love to see that you're so engrossed in the show!
This is why I’m obsessed with Dickinson, it’s so powerful and a movement of women’s rights and how women should be treated vs how they were treated back then. It shows so much power. The LGBTQIA+ community can relate and feel connected to this with Emily and sue being in love but having obstacles in the way of their love
hi Adam, i didn't know you before 3 days ago and honestly i'm very sorry because i like your dickinson reactions and how we think in the same way (more or less) about the show. It makes me laugh that I have already finished Dickinson but I react as if it were the first time (it doesn't bother me in fact) I can't wait to see your next reaction
Like always my dear.. I just loved your reaction!! This show is amazing.. And I watch it and re-watch it every day. Can't wait for your next reaction, do it sooner than possible please! I LOVE DICKINSON AND I LOVE YOU
HONESTLY I WAS NEARLY IN TEARS JUST WATCHING THIS EPISODE ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING, I love how it is portrayed so much though, also p.s. it is believed to be true that Ben was also gay like Emily and they weren’t really romantic at all in real life and I like how they portray that in Dickinson
My heart actually broke when Emily was slapped by his father. I hate him so much after this episode. Aside in EmiSue, I ship Ben and Emily they have chemistry and Ben is gentleman. Ben's character is cute.
Your reactions always made my days thanks you so much. Can you react to the serie "Lost girl" with the ship "Bo/Lauren and Bo/Tamsin ? I think you gonna like it 😉🤗
This comment has nothing to do with this particular series (but Ive started binging it and I can only say....Haileee you GOOOO girl!!! but), however I do love it but I'mI just came here to inform anybody who was not aware of this that follows Adam on a regular basis since Supergirl... Katie Mcgrath is going to be in "The continental" John Wick prequel series and I had to share it with somebody because I can't stop squealing idk why I just felt like I had to share. Thats all. xD
This show just proves again and again that Hailee Steinfeld is a goddess.

She deserves an Emmy

"I went to the circus" give Hailee an Emmy or something
This episode really cemented how this is the most unique show I've ever watched and how special it is
