If there are more than 5 people in the world who beat this game during the pre internet era, I'd be shocked. I played this and dark souls. Dragons lair was about a million x tougher and not in a good way.
To this person, where ever you are. Hats off and applause.. You are a true inspiration and i know now that anything is possible. You chose to beat this game. What was next? President? Astronaut?
If I bought this for $64.99 back in the day, or even played it, and then saw this speedrun of some guy beating it in under 7 minutes, I would probably yell so loud that the cosmos would crack.

First you grind to 99 in the reactor. Then you and Acro work on taking Ruby out with no control on Red. Now you have an amazing speed run on one of the most difficult NES games I have ever tried. Is there anything you can't do?

In this game you actually need to take the good order else you either, go back in a level you did before or (if you take the last one...) be stuck in a room where you have to fight a reaper that is almost impossible to kill!(Only to get points for the highscore that disapear after you close the console...) So yes, it matter which "stop" you take...But what's worst is that if you miss your "stop" you'll be forced to go to the reaper's room...cause it's not going up.
The congratulations screen music is pretty good. Luckily someone was actually able to beat this game so I could hear it. Cause Lord knows I’d never get past the first screen
You have to pick them up in the level, but they are hidden unless you use the candle. The "A" icons are the axe pickups. I think there's also a Fireball ("F") attack as well.
Came here after watching the old video of AVGN failing at this. I think this game suffered from the same thing as many NES games. They didn't want to spend a ton of time making an in-depth game with a lot of content, so they just made it hard as s**t to keep you from finishing it quickly, or at all. Back then you might just assume that you're simply not good at the game and that there must be a lot more content that you're missing due to your lack of skill. Back in the day when games like this came out, with limited lives, limited continues, and no save points in most games, I just accepted that I wasn't going to beat many NES games.
Game developers and publishers during the NES era didn't have to worry about online reviews so they could get away with being lazy easier than they can today. Game purchases were often blind buys based on cover art and a few screen shots. Fortunately, my first blind buy was for Mega Man II so that worked out pretty well for me. Over time we pretty much figured out that Konami, Capcom = good and LJN = bad

There is a new strat for last boss, so it's possible to save around 20 seconds.
