These are all impressive-looking and I want to get my hands on one eventually. As far as favorite, I’d have to go with the white. The white color looks awesome.
The new honour guard has way better shape and design but I feel that the old honour guard has way better detailing and colouring. This is a recurring theme with mega. A lot of their old figures have great painting and just feel less like toys but the new figures are cheaper and as a result they have less detail and lower quality painting.

while i do think that the new one should have had the same shade of red and gold as the old one, I think it still looks way better over all. Hopefully we get like a Shadow Convoy remake that gives us Honor Guards with the best of both combined.
It wouldn't have made much sense for Mega to do the exact colors, because then it wouldn't be unique--they seem to like keeping even re-releases unique. A9 for example.
I kinda prefer the white ones 1.white is as cooler cooler for honor Guards 2.it’s cheaper and the actual red one is too expensive 3.the series 18 one is orange and looks like ketchup
The only one I have is the series 3 one. Would love to get the lights en mass and paint them red myself, as well as grabbing the chest piece off one for the shipmaster (more accurate than the chest he comes with in the 20th Ann. Pack)
I just wish i could find any of them none of the stores around me seem to stock halo heros or hell most sets and if i want them i would have to pay way above msrp. I eant to give mega my money but just cant.
At first I was a little disappointed with the color change, but honestly now I think I prefer the new red for this fig. The old fig looks more dim and dull (generally, not looking at details), and the new red honestly just has a more ornamental, vibrant aesthetic, and I feel that fits perfectly with the concept of the honor guards. The brighter red just really pops. Also I like the gray tone because it keeps a separation between the undersuit and the armor, instead of blending in. I think the biggest issue with the gray is actually because of the gold application. It's definitely a bit weak, and makes the gray look more blotchy. Nobody really complained about the gray on the Light of Sanghelios, probably because you can see side by side the gold application is better and it maintains that contrast with the gold, where the gold on the newer honor guard pretty much blurs the detail of the helmet, especially in the base of the horns as you mentioned. Dang I really overanalyzed these figs but hey it's fun to be included sometimes xD
I think too, nobody complained about the gray on the Lights figure because white and gray are kind of proportionately toned down in comparison to the dark red and black, so it wasn't as noticeable. The red and gray has less contrast when paired.

Mega should make the ultra rare Honor Guard Commander in gold. It’s a character that shows up literally once in a recent Halo novel.

I think it's mainly the lower contrast paint scheme

I think halo 2 has different shades for the minor/major. Like the major in halo 2 has both those shades of red in game.

I feel the h2a chest is a bit too chunky on the honor guard, I prefer them having the h3 minor chesplate instead.
