On the signing of the US Declaration of Independence, Ben Franklin quipped that “Now either we all hang together or we’ll all hang separately.” That’s a pretty good description of the two factions here.
Is that a pun? As in "we'll all hang together" is another way of saying we'll all hang out and be friends?
@@alexchatter692 I think they mean hanging as the execution method
Its a symbiotic relationship. The mechanicus enjoys the protection of the Imperium and its vast resources. The Imperium on the otherhand needs the Mechanicum for weapons, ships, primaris marines etc. They need each other despite their differences.
In my estimation, the Mechanicus has always seen itself as an independant organisation. The Imperium has had to face off against the Mechanicum 7 times! (Including the incident on Armaggedon between Chaplain Grimaldus and the Mechanicum!) It is also the case of the Mechanicum has its own religion. The Mechanicus has always looked down on the institutions of the Imperium and the ordinary people of the Imperium as motes of dust! But, the Mechanicus needs flesh to keep going!
However, certain tech built on Terra before the Crusade was kept away from the servants of the Mechanicum! Some of which is still in the possession of the Dark Angels! Point in case, the Mechanicum's envy of the Salamanders and a certain ship in the posseession of the Salamanders! The Mechanicus is necessary, but must be closely watched by all levels of the Imperium!
As the most recent Dark Angels book, Lazarus enmity's edge revealed, there is a lot of distrust between the imperium and the mechanicus. Now imagine thousands of other worlds with that level of distrust.
The mechanicum's agents were responsible for the fall of the Soul Drinkers, by stealing one of the chapter's relics. So, the alliance is shaky at best, and at worst, already broken several times over
Stable enough to both know where the real threat lies and that they don't need a "civil war". With the rift and tyranids, they need each other. Mars especially needs access to all the imperial worlds and the military might to find all the lost tech they value so much.
Stable enough not to openly screw eachother over.
But unsteble enought that they constantly screw each other behimd the scenes.
I like to say the Imperium sees the Adepta Mechanicus as part of the Imperium, but the Mechanicus sure don't see it that way. It literally depends upon who you ask. Just like a lot of human politics, their relationship is messy, and I like that.
Great video and nice people are actually talking about it in the comments
Imperioum's officials see Mechanicus as just one of the factions of the Imperium. On the other hand, Mechanicus sees itself almost as partner of the Imperium, having their own worlds where they rule supreme. And I am quite sure (though I don't think it is written anywhere) that top Mechanicus magos have contingency plans what to do after Imperium or to even turn against the Imperium, if need be.
Regardless of how decadent the Imperium is - its main goal is the proliferation of humanity, all other goals are in service of that one. Mechanicus, on the other side, care only about the worship of technology, acquiring more of it - they don't care much about humanity as a whole. And that difference of the main directive can be a source of contention.
They DO need each other, very much so. But Mechanicus is one of the factions that, if calculations show that backstabbing Terra is more beneficial, will probably do it. They accepted the treaty with the Emperor simply because it was more beneficial than fighting him. The religious aspect on top of it was just a cherry on top, not the primary reason.
I feel he cares more about the throne than the emperor.
Cawl is too useful an ally. G-man should stand with him.
Just here to yell at you to do more IHs videos, don't mind me.
I think if worst comes to worst, the Imperium would send in assassins to kill the Troublemakers if they kept it up and replace them.
Both sides get way too much for the deal to go bust.
I wish we had these stories as shorts on that trash fire warhammer tv app.
the mechanicus informed guilliman that since the beginning AI has always been part of the imperium.
I could see the Emperor getting the custodes to root out the rebellious parts of the Mechanicum if things got too bad
I also wonder how the relationship between Imperium and Mechanicus was faring during the Regin of Blood. What was Mechanicus' opinion of Goge Vandire... I don't think they were so loyal then...
Iirc, they hated him because he wanted them to make / give him stuff, though they were too powerful for him to mess with I think. They had a big hand in the siege of the Imperial palace at the climax and brought some really big guns
Surprised you didnt talk about the Voice of Mars conspiracy. The Mechanicus effectively controls the Iron Hands, to the point they actually wrote and propagated the lore of Ferrus' early life. They've mostly taken over one of the original Legions and control its movements and ideology. Last we saw, Kardan Stronos was leading them, but we dont know the final finer details on how deep Mars' claws are in the Chapter, how Stronos as the defacto Chapter Master handled the conspiracy, if there were any repercussions for either side, or hell, if Mars even cares.
Gimme a proper war and a book for dark mechanicum
The Emperor always had plans within plans - the Dark Angels is his trump card against the mechanicus - they are not reliant on Mars for their equipment - have minimal tech marines in their ranks being the first legion outfitted by Terran weapon smiths.
They have access to all sorts of delicious abominable DAOT weapons on their flagship and there is the Custodes with their own good DOAT stuff locked away in the vaults below the palace.
Let the algorithm flow
So as a mechanicus player this idea sounds great. I kind if want it to happen just so I can stop. The mechanicus would get its chest stomped in. And finally the mech. would be apart of the imperium like gw has wanted for years now.

Adeptus Mechanicus is a very sovereign organisation, but it is a part of the Imperium. The Imperium is made up by the union of the Adeptus Mechanicus (the Priesthood of Mars) and the Adeptus Terra (the Priesthood of Earth). The symbolism of the union of Terra and Mars is portrayed within the two heads of the Imperial Aquilla. They are not an ally to the Imperium, they are an ally to Terra, together with which they make up the Imperium of Man.
Just...DAMN!
Nice!! Ron Simmons lives on in 40k
i dont know if this has ever been discussed, im sure it has, but what if guilliman learns of his "father" and uses the space marines (non primaris) as tools, and starts treating his "sons" as such thereafter, or maybe another thunder warrior type scenario, just a thought
