Koplewicz debunks the myth that Ritalin and Adderall affect those without ADHD differently than those with it. The effect is the same.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    HAROLD KOPLEWICZ:
Dr. Harold Koplewicz is one of the nation’s leading child and adolescent psychiatrists. He is widely recognized as an innovator in the field, a strong advocate for child mental health, and a master clinician. He has also been at the forefront of public education to dispel the myths and stigma surrounding children and adolescents living with psychiatric disorders. Koplewicz has been repeatedly recognized in America’s Top Doctors, Best Doctors in America, and New York Magazine’s “Best Doctors in New York.” In 2006, he was appointed Director of the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research (NKI), making him the third person to hold that position since the institution’s founding in 1952. He is also the founding president of the Child Mind Institute.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    TRANSCRIPT:
Question: Do ADHD drugs affect a “normal” brain differently than a brain with ADHD?
Harold Koplewicz: Well I think that’s a myth. I think there’s a myth out there that if you are a hyper-active, or ADHD kid, Ritalin or Ritalin-like medications are going to work on you differently than they will on the normal population. And that’s what it is. It’s a myth; it’s inaccurate. So for all of us, whenever we would take on of these medicines, your dopamine and norepinephrine is going to be more readily available in your brain. You will be more focused. You will be more attentive, you will also, might be a little more uptight and a little more hyper-vigilant. And when you take any medicine, there’s a cost/benefit ratio. Any time you take a medicine, there’s a potential side effect. So if you don’t have ADHD and you’re going to take this medicine, any psychostimulant, any type of drug like this is going to increase your heart rate, it may elevate your blood pressure, it will decrease your appetite. Those things are side effects that are unnecessary if your dopamine and norepinephrine levels are normal. In the same way that if you take too many aspirin. It will thin your platelets, which might be good, but might be bad. And if you take too much aspirin you can actually get an ulcer.
So this is something that every time you get prescribed a medicine, a doctor is thinking about what the cost/benefit ratio is. A little quick soundbyte..
So, but the important part for us to remember is that when someone with ADHD gets these medicines, they get closer to what a normal, typical brain response is. So that they look less hyper-active, they look more attentive, therefore they’re less impulsive. They are able to do what they’re capable of doing. It doesn’t increase your IQ points, it doesn’t make you smarter, it lets you get to the IQ points that you do have. And therefore, while you’re never as attentive as a typical or normal individual, and you never stop moving around and stay as still as a typical normal, you are more in the normal range that permits you to be more contemplative, insightful, and therefore get in touch with and use your intelligence.
Question: Is there any danger of addiction or long-term chemical changes?
Harold Koplewicz: Well, I think there are other side effects. So, for instance, particularly if you take Dexedrine-which is a more potent version of Ritalin, slightly different chemical structure-there is no doubt that you will also get a slight rise in your mood and you will feel somewhat more euphoric and you will feel more expansive. And therefore, if you start taking that medicine on a regular basis, when you don’t have it you very possibly will feel a crash, or you will feel down. And therefore, that’s the potential side effect that could be quite serious, that you become used to it or become almost addicted to the sensation of feeling good when it’s not necessary to cause you to focus or you don’t need it for extended attention.

I have ADHD and take ritalin. I find that i have to take ritalin on a regular basis to feel normal. To hold a conversation even with my own family without getting phsytracted and doing something else. I think that it has had a really strong impact on my life and helped me in achieveing goals that prior to taking this medicine I wouldn't have been able to achieve. I just wish I could have had it earlier and maybe succeed more in college and GCSE's.

I was just investigating something like this and proposed a question some time ago. How should we treat someone who makes the Honor Roll or the Dean's List if they are taking medicine prescribed by a doctor to help with psychological function? The more judgmental among us might be fine with pushing to have them delisted or asterisked as if they took steroids, but we are still a good way from just acknowledging that they just need the help.

There is a lot of people making second hand claims. As an Adult my dopamin levels go through a lag compared to a normal person. My Speech processes are slower though I am considered very well spoken and deep thinking, I do not process a thought as fast as others. This gives plenty of time for stray thoughts (racing mind) to invade, COMPLETELY AGAINST MY WILL, my current thought process. When I am on a stimulant which raises those level to be ready when I call for them, they are there. With out it it is like listening to your favorite radio station and 10 others at the same time. Its a horrible way to live as an adult. As a child it wasn't so bad because people liked to be around me because I was impulsive and fun. Thats what I needed to be as a child in school preparing for the rest of my life, right. just like the "other kids" who were having fun on their radio station and then turned it off to do their work. I could not turn that fun station off and listen to the work station. I understand its hard because the child doesn't know what's going on and the parents sure don't and all you strangers absolutely can not say what every kid you have never met needs.

EDIT: My country is behind the newer proper terminology. I found out not long after writing this by doing my own research. I have ADHD Combined type, ADHD-C, in my case mostly inattentive but of the hyper ones I've got talking (and thinking) faster than most can keep up with, quick associations and rapid jumping to new subjects, often out of boredom, plus prone to impulsiveness. I sit still just fine though ;-P

When I take any of those meds, my thinking slows and I feel stupid. I go off the meds and I can think about 20 different things at once. So I’m wondering if I’m not the one with the disability. Maybe it’s everyone else that can’t keep up are the ones that need meds

today i am 24 years old, i take this when i need to do an exam(chemistry degree), but that's it. i dont need it to stay in focus when i study in the class/home.
i can do exams without it, but when i am on it i get better results and i feel way more better when i do the exam.

I wanna take it only for one exam, this exam's time is very short compared to how many questions it contains, there is 166 short question for 160 minutes(2 hours and 40 minutes), to do well in this exam you have to stay focused all time because if you get distracted and think about something else you will not be able to solve all the questions.
but I cant stay focused for 160 minutes, I can set down and study for more than 3 hours but during this time I will think about other things maybe stare at the wall for a number of minutes

I have been prescribed both Ritalin and Adderall in my life. I can testify that Ritalin gave me headaches all the time and made me feel not so great. It also did very little to help. Adderall on the other hand gave me no side effects and helped a lot. It did however make me feel like I wasn't myself anymore. I felt like a different person. I eventually quit all prescription drugs and haven't taken any in over a decade. I am sure these drugs have severely changed since my time on them but I always say it is best to really help yourself. Do not become dependent upon a pill. Just my two cents.

    • @TheDavveponken

The thing is, they have been the same for decades and nobody's bothered enough to actually research the negative side effects or how the drug actually work. Recent studies show links to developing parkinson's, cardiovascular disease and sexual and reproductive dysfunction. It's a poison. I guess they just don't care since the crazies are just rats to them. Why not test drugs on them and make a huge profit while doing so, nobody of any real importance are going to get hurt or care. Just my two cynical cents after Ritalin ruined my life in the blink of an eye.

A friend of mine had ritalin so he gave me some to trial. What I found was exactly as described. Though It was suprisingly odd when I noticed an almost "tunnel vision" type of focus toward extremely superficial conversations. Conversations that don't require deep thought were actually engaging for the first time in my life. You could talk to me about the freaking kardashians and I'd care enough to use my knowledge about psychology toward the topic rather than thinking it's not interesting enough to expend energy on. However I later evaluated my experience futher and found that I felt as if I had been ignoring others around me including my girlfriend during a conversation with whoever I was speaking with even though they were happy speaking with others. I felt less attentive when in general I'd try to include others. So it may have been due to that awareness of everything and everyone around me without ritalin. Not being distracted by others around me made me feel a tad rude 😅

50% of this is just being a kid. The other half can be solved by parenting. I didn't get better until after I dropped out of school and was shocked at how bad my life was. I started parenting myself and now I'm a PhD candidate.

I was misdiagnosed with adhd at the age of 5, I had to take Ritalin and concerta most of my childhood until I turned 13 when they couldn't up my dosage anymore than they had. and I stopped taking it and protested against it. due to other personal troubles I had I was seeing another psychiatrist who wasn't the one for ADHD. he realized I wasn't showing any of the usual traits of someone with ADHD or ADD so he decided to get me tested again. Turned out I never had ADHD and I actually had borderline personality disorder. so for years I was on a drug that has now given me horrible side affects (slowing of the metabolism and a weaker heart, also not to mention on the Ritalin I was always in a zombie like state could barely talk let alone play with the other kids, not to mention I would physically feel sick at the sight or smell of food, almost making me anorexic at one point in my childhood.) I literally had to be taught at the age of 14 at a community school how to socialize because I didn't know how to talk with my peers, I could talk with adults because that's the only people who where around when it wore off. Also I would like to ask if anyone else who took Ritalin felt kinda trapped in there own bodies? Like for me I could feel smell and hear everything but it felt like I wasn't in control of my own body, every lunch time i'd walk and sit on a bench staring and I wouldn't move until the bell rang to go back to class, even though I wanted to play with all of the other kids.

i hate all these labels psychiatrists like to use on people. sometimes itvis clearly justified in the casecof obvious cases of schizophrenia and major catatonic depression but being labled at the age of 5 with ADHD then again at 13 with borderline personality seems somewhat irresponsible of the medical community. borderline personality isn't even a medical illness and they labelled you

CzarnyMlot i do have ADD. But in my country there is only 4 ADD drugs that you can get. About Ritalin, only have normal ritalin (10 mg). Not uno or something like that. Strongest one that you can get is concerta. Which is im using right now. But to be honest i've never liked that type of drugs at all. I know that it helps me alot with ADD. But sometimes it doesnt worth using when i compare it with its side effects. But also i dont have another choice to do.

Anyway there are better ways of coping with attention deficit that does not require being hooked on medication.

Now at 18, i do take medication in college- only once in a while tho on days my systems just arent enough and my brain refuses to focus. 5-20 mg ritalin IR. its a lifesaver for when caffeine doesnt cut it without making me anxious, but i dont need it to excel. I learned the skills that allow me to excel without the medication, but the medication helps on a low functioning day when i have a big exam or presentation and cant afford to be hyperactive, unfocused or nervous. He's contradicting himself in the video. Because folks with ADHD have reduced dopamine production, and increased reuptake, the medication by basic cause-and-effect will not affect someone with ADHD the same. It technically does the same thing in the brain, but since the baselines are different the effects on the person are different. Taking insulin is dangerous unless you have diabetes; same thing.
He's conflating two different categorical sets of facts, so he's wrong in a practical sense.

(vent time!) I was diagnosed by an ADHD specialist 2 days ago. I'm 23 years old and I've performed extremely well academically my entire life. Crushed exams at 16, crushed exams at 18, go to a fucking brilliant university (despite failing many, MANY in-class tests, I've always just kind of been the type of person to clutch shit last-minute, which my clinician advised me might also be due to ADHD). Socially, I didn't really have bigger problems than any other teenager. I would talk over people a lot, and yeah, that's definitely a symptom (I showed many!), but my parents were very reticent to label me as anything. I've only just managed to get real-life acknowledgement for the struggles I faced as a child and the ones I still face today. If I made it this far untreated, I can't imagine the heights I could reach through a proper course of treatment. I can't wait to get started!!!

Of course, didn't get the best grades as some questions were trivias (apart from friends getting baffled) still we passed school this way (dropped out twice due to more exciting social chaos), but was the "intelligence" measure were based on general performance? I know we sucked on that as life demanded more monotonous challenges as adulthood took over (just asking)

Someone asked me for how long I would use my uppers. My answer is I am always looking for an alternative. I take my stimulant rarely because it is so powerful it can keep me up for 2 nights in a row. I would like to bring to your attention fellow ADD/ADHD brothers and sisters to check out this book 'The Da Vinci Method'. Also someone called Otto Rank protege of Freud who came up with a method for those like us. It was ignoraed because it applied to us the 10% instead of the 90% normal types.

Him: “Adhd medicine effects ‘normal’ people different” is a MYTH
Also Him: *tells us how adhd medicine effects ‘normal’ brains differently from adhd brains
    🤔

@@deleterguy As someone with adhd I can guarantee you that stimulants effect us differently than “normal brains”.
