I was lucky enough to be at this gig. Other Voices 2007. A tiny festival in a church in Dingle on the west coast of Ireland. It's one of the best music festivals in the world and this is one of the best sets ever from the festival.
I keep coming back to Ryan Adams time and time again. His catalogue is unbelievable. He should have greater success and public awareness and accolades but like most things with RA, it's complicated. These songs will endure because they are so strong. Great sadness about Neal - seemed like a sweet soul.
Neal was my favorite guitarist. He wrote all the set break music for the Grateful Dead Fare Thee Well shows, which spawned the band Circles Around the Sun.
Your absolutely perfectly right good mr Palmesano.........what a beautiful song indeed. Honesty in songwriting is the only prerequisite for acceptance......the ear was made to hear , and the heart was made to feel......near perfection. Thank you once again , ron
Beautiful song and I agree 100% re Adams gift as a writer. Sometimes I think there’s a pressure to find more “interesting” parts, chords, etc, but when it comes down to it the most memorable songs are simple with beautiful melodies, great lyrics, and good ol’ cowboy chords. And yeah, the pristine accompaniment doesn’t hurt a bit. Always loved this tune.
Man- I forgot all about this. Those 2 albums Ryan made with the cardinals were just absolutely breathtaking. LET IT RIDE should have bee the one you watched. Its AMAZING.
The one time I got to see Neal perform live was at The Bijou in Knoxville. He was the opener for a Cardinals show. My main memory of his set is that he paused after a few songs and said something like, "The thing about live music is that it almost always sounds good out there where you're sitting. This is one of the rare theaters where it sounds good up here too." Beautiful player, beautiful voice, beautiful songs.
Neal's soaring high harmonies are just incredible. He and Ryan were quite good together. Electrically, Neal was one of the finest , certainly a big part of contemporary psychedelia.
RIP Neal. He was one of those guys who's sound came from a very unique place. It reminded me a lot of Jerry from the exploratory sense. Edited to add that when he passed i hadn't been as sad as I had since Jerry for the passing of an artist
The Jason Isbell song St. Peter's Autograph is about dealing Amanda's grief over the suicide of her friend, Neal Casal. I put St. Peter's Autograph on the same level as If We Were Vampires
I forgot about this song. I've seen him play it on piano in Antwerp, and it nearly broke my heart! The emotion in his voice... . As a singer-songwriter... I call that pure perfection!
I'm a relative late comer to Neal Casal. I became aware of him through the Chris Robinson Brotherhood. The beauty of the internet is that I can regularly watch or listen to quite a vast catalogue of his work. I'm also a fan of the tribute album Highway Butterfly. It's evident that Neal was very much loved by his peers. RIP Neal Casal.
Just saw Ryan live in Plymouth, UK and honestly he was on the best form I’ve seen him live… always reworking vocal melodies… inhabits the songs as living, breathing, always evolving things. Crazy good pitch and tone. That said, he had something seriously magical with Neal who was incredible in his own right, particularly with harmony. Honestly think Ryan is infinitely better than Isbell - so much more nuance, character and dynamics.
Neal was guitarist in Circles Around the Sun, Jayhawks, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, played with Shooter Jennings and Willie Nelson too. Really fantastic musician, but unfortunately took his own life in 2019. Very sad
Love Neal Casal music!!! Followed him for some time and have several of his CD's. Michael please give Neal Casal some time your be hooked too man! I met him one night a he was really nice musician! He played with a lot of people. But his music was really good!
Ryan Adams is 1000% legit. Ive been a devout follower for 10 years or more. You should cover some of his Whiskeytown era stuff. A lot of gold there. Neal Casal is an amazing guitarist in between the Americana and jam band world.
If you like Neal Casal and haven't listened to his work with Hard Working Americans, especially their Rest in Chaos album, you're missing out. Dave Schools of Widespread Panic on bass, Duane Trucks on drums, and Todd Snider on vocals and lyrics. Check out "Throwing the Goats" or "Roman Candles."
I love your video Michael ! just straight foward and honest, thank you so much. Maybe one day you can do one on John Mayer crossroads, such a good guitar solo! I think that you would have a lot to say about it! thanks again!
Jason Isbel, Ryan Adams, Chris Stapleton...a great triumvirate of music today. I also love Ryan Adams's take on Taylor Swift's 1989. So much better than the overhyped queen of pop. When The Stars Turn BLue is another one of my favorites and on heavy rotation.
You want perfect playing from these two on one of Adams' more interesting songs in terms of structure - react to these two doing Sink Ships in a little black cab.
If im trying to woo a woman through deep, shadowy heart felt music. Music you can feel in your very bones... Im putting on Ryan Adams acoustic sets. Theres not much better than just him and a guitar. In any time. Isbell fails to move me as much as Ryan Adams
I came to Neal through the Chris Robinson brotherhood. Neal and Adam (piano/moog genius) together were just something extraordinary. I’d say listen to Rosalee from the CRB if ya interested.
Michael! Big fan mate, came across your videos 1 year ago in England. Would love to see your thoughts and reaction to MkGee’s live version of “Candy”, let me know if you need the link. Firm handshakes and Godspeed
Anyone have album suggestions to check out of Ryan (live or studio)? I typically prefer stripped-back, acoustic only (similar to this performance). Thanks!
He did a tour called “Live After Deaf” - just him and a guitar or on piano, solo. Also a solo set “Live at Carnegie Hall” or, “Live at Rough Trade”. But, you should also check out his solo album “Gold” and the albums he did with the the Cardinals, of which, Neal Casal (the other guitarist in this video), was a member.
Ryan truly is one of the best. I’ve seen him many times in concert. Too bad he turned out to be a piece of shit. Begs the question of how far do you follow an artist when you know they’re not a good person. RIP Neal.
When you talk sus and 2 and 5 without a 7 in the minor WE ALL ARE LOST. Please skip that part. Thanks. 4 chord D and a mellow 5 and a third bass melody. Wtf.
It’s too bad DRA is and was so mercurial and the original Cardinals departed. I used to be the biggest fan of DRA but that all shifted starting around the time of Rock N Roll record and the quality tanked (in MY opinion). Crazy how tangent our music tastes are. When Jason went solo in 2007, I was ALL IN! Greatest living writer for sure. Neal took his own life a while back. Very sad
It’s definitely possibly maybe for sure an essay on the cost of renting versus buying a home, skyrocketing inflation and the duality of such. Also, the absolute dichotomy of 2 then 1….i think I’m maybe possibly totally perhaps conceivably definitely correct.
Haha true.. he said in a concert once people thought it was a love song about two people, but it was actually about how it used to take one pill to sleep/ relax and then it took two to get the same result .. not sure if he was joking
RIP Neal. The cardinals records and tours will not be topped.
I was lucky enough to be at this gig. Other Voices 2007. A tiny festival in a church in Dingle on the west coast of Ireland. It's one of the best music festivals in the world and this is one of the best sets ever from the festival.
WOW!
Adams' songbook is its own universe.
I'm so lucky I found Ryan Adams in 2001. Haven't stopped listening to him since.
I keep coming back to Ryan Adams time and time again. His catalogue is unbelievable. He should have greater success and public awareness and accolades but like most things with RA, it's complicated. Yep, great time to be alive when we’ve been blessed to have Ryan and Jason both ❤
Your absolutely perfectly right good mr Palmesano.........what a beautiful song indeed. Honesty in songwriting is the only prerequisite for acceptance......the ear was made to hear , and the heart was made to feel......near perfection. Thank you once again , ron

RIP Neal. He was a member of Chris Robinson Brotherhood & Hard Working Americans. HWA had 2 members of Widespread Panic in it.
And Todd mfin' Snider!
circles round the sun
Went to a lot of CRB shows and him and Adam just were soooo gooood.

Neal was a local dude who made it big... My favorite work of his was "Circles Around The Sun". RIP

Me too!! Wild right?!!! Something about his playing was just so raw and real. A lot like Jerry
The Jason Isbell song St. Peter's Autograph is about dealing Amanda's grief over the suicide of her friend, Neal Casal. I put St. Peter's Autograph on the same level as If We Were Vampires
Ryan Adams’ Live at Carnegie Hall record is SO GOOD, particularly the second album’s setlist as it was recorded seamlessly.
I forgot about this song. I've seen him play it on piano in Antwerp, and it nearly broke my heart! The emotion in his voice... . As a singer-songwriter... I call that pure perfection!
Ryan Adams is one of my all time favorites. More please.
I'm a relative late comer to Neal Casal. I became aware of him through the Chris Robinson Brotherhood.

Thanks for doing this ❤✌️
This era of their music is insanely good. It always kinda reminds me of Workingmans Dead era songs. Just beautiful crafted Americana
Was hoping for "Let It Ride" from this set, but still awesome you did it!
Also Neil is my favorite lead of all time!
Neal played with Chris Robinson brotherhood and a project with Todd snider
Neal was guitarist in Circles Around the Sun, Jayhawks, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, played with Shooter Jennings and Willie Nelson too. Really fantastic musician, but unfortunately took his own life in 2019. Very sad
Thank you, Michael!
Love Ryan Adams, for me; the best songwriter of the last 20 years or so. Brilliant as always.
I love Ryan Adams.. always brilliant!
Love Neal Casal music!!! Followed him for some time and have several of his CD's. Michael please give Neal Casal some time your be hooked too man! I met him one night a he was really nice musician! He played with a lot of people. But his music was really good!
"Two" from Easy Tiger. Oof, it's still so good. 😍😍
Ryan Adams is 1000% legit. Ive been a devout follower for 10 years or more. You should cover some of his Whiskeytown era stuff. A lot of gold there. Neal Casal is an amazing guitarist in between the Americana and jam band world.
Well said man, completely agree

Everything on EASY TIGER is incredible!
Jacksonville City Lights.
Cold Roses 🌹
All full of amazing music ❤️
Man if you don't know Neal - and especially with Ryan - look up some live mid / late 2000s Ryan Adams and the Cardinals. One of the best bands ever.
Neal was on so many amazing albums.
Beautiful song! Love that PRS ;)
To learn more about Neal Casal go to his Fade Away Diamond Time album. It's an amazing album..
Beautiful!

RIP Neal. Got to see him and Circles around the Sun open for Greensky bluegrass just prior to his death amazing show.
RIP neal. I would love for you to do a vid breaking down Magnolia Mountain. Those 2 are dynamic af in that vid.
For all of his faults, Adams is an incredible writer
Justin Townes Earle is right up there with Jason Isabell in songwriting
you not knowing who Neal is - was surprising! Listen to his work with Chris Robinson Brotherhood Big Moon Ritual album. Beautiful.
I love your video Michael ! just straight foward and honest, thank you so much. Maybe one day you can do one on John Mayer crossroads, such a good guitar solo! I think that you would have a lot to say about it!
thanks again!

Amen, great song
Any chance we can deep dive into an entire record of Ryan’s? Easy Tiger for instance? I’d be forever grateful ❤
Flawed man, brilliant songwriter
We are all flawed.
I would liked to have found you 40 years ago. I play by ear and don't understand theory. I do, however, read music but cannot understand tablature.
If im trying to woo a woman through deep, shadowy heart felt music. Music you can feel in your very bones... Im putting on Ryan Adams acoustic sets. Theres not much better than just him and a guitar. In any time. Isbell fails to move me as much as Ryan Adams

Neil Casal RIP. @michael - check out Circles Around The Sun Neil’s last band
Taylor Goldsmith from Dawes NEEDS to be in the greatest song writer conversation.
Taylor Goldsmith is in this songwriting category for me. SO great.
Check out “Let It Ride” from the same show. Perfect.
Michael! Big fan mate, came across your videos 1 year ago in England. Would love to see your thoughts and reaction to MkGee’s live version of “Candy”, let me know if you need the link.
Firm handshakes and Godspeed
And so sorry because i did not realize Neal had passed away.
Rip
Sorry to be so stupid but what is the name of this song, I just love it ❤️
It's called "Two"
I with you on all opinions re jason and Ryan.
Pretty funny jason and ryan hate each other both masters at their craft
What guitar are you playing. Love the look.
PRS SE Custom 24 I think
Fantastic song about drug abuse and addiction.
When you coming out with michael palmisano's parmigiano?
I was a child until this album came out. Please do Layla by Unknown Mortal Orchestra
Would love to see you breakdown Mk.Gee's tone and playing
Hi Michael, you migth want to try to listen to Gregory Alan Isakov, for sure one of the best songwriters on this era
Check some of the old Terrapin videos with Neal Cassel and Ross James.
Thank me later. 👍
Miss CRB so much
Me too.
Michael, you definitely need to check out Neal Casal’s solo albums and his work with Circles Around the Sun. Gone too soon to suicide unfortunately.
I hear an old Beatles tune in that riff....it's too early, help me out?
Check Neal Casal's cover of Debris ((Ronnie Lane) on Return in Kind. It is SO good!
Anyone have album suggestions to check out of Ryan (live or studio)? I typically prefer stripped-back, acoustic only (similar to this performance). Thanks!

@@musicfan8253 thanks for the suggestions!!
I do a version of let it ride ....love that song.
Gotta Have John Hiatt in that list....
Can't deny that. th-cam.com/video/AN-6EPkuP_U/w-d-xo.html
I really think That you need to react to John mayer come back to bed live at last call
Dude you should react to Jacob Colliers latest video about his 5-string Taylor guitar.
Ryan truly is one of the best. I’ve seen him many times in concert. Too bad he turned out to be a piece of shit. Begs the question of how far do you follow an artist when you know they’re not a good person. RIP Neal.
To be honest plenty of bigger artists have done worse things than Adams was accused of without the backlash he faced.
Webb
Kirstopherson
Dylan
Prine
Williams Sr&Jr
Etc....👍
Meet Neal. th-cam.com/video/nkNvNPr0Ors/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bWeqaAsGUSLlPD0R

Neal took his own life a while back. Very sad
Live like Neal ,,,,,,,easy winds❣
RIP Neal
I think he's singing about inflation🙄
It’s definitely possibly maybe for sure an essay on the cost of renting versus buying a home, skyrocketing inflation and the duality of such. Also, the absolute dichotomy of 2 then 1….i think I’m maybe possibly totally perhaps conceivably definitely correct.
