    When I first started doing intermittent fasting, I discovered that doing a workout was an effective way to help me extend my fast.

      On alternate day fasting I found that going on several hour walks or cycling trips on the fasting day was effective and there was no offsetting food intake. Anyone who is overweight can never have true hunger, it is ghrelin mediated and can be quenched with some slightly salted water. Over time I found that going to a ketogenic diet helped remove any hunger on the fasting days. My weight loss experience has been the best ever in my life and I have lost 65 pounds in under eight months. I have gotten more active and there has been muscle mass gain which is partially hiding the fat loss. Intermittent fasting has to be a life style change for people with insulin resistance and pre-diabetic HbA1c. Removing the burden of bread, rice and pasta from the diet is also essential.

    Dr. Jason Fung, you gave me permission to stop eating. Thank you. My entire life I’ve been an overweight athlete. I run and lift weights and have been trying to lose weight for 20 years because I no longer needed the weight. I recently was given not so great news about my health, frustrated, i tried everything except fasting - vegan, keto, Mediterranean, CICO, lumen. I tried fasting once for 5 days in my early 20’s as a challenge to see if I could survive in the event things got tough for me financially. I survived it and forgot about it. My entire life I’ve been told that I need to eat to stay health, I need to eat to have energy, I need to eat to be successful. You told me that those mantras are not true and gave me the key to unlock my weight loss. I’ve only been fasting for a short time but I know I will reach my goal in no time. I’ve already lost 17 lbs in less than 2 weeks mixing up my fasting giving my body just enough carbs to do my sprinting. You are saving my life and adding years to my life. It will not be wasted on me. Thank you for keeping me off medication. I don’t want to contribute to the high cost of healthcare and I certainly don’t want to contribute to overwhelming our medical system.

      I applaud and commend you for your desire to not want to contribute to the high cost of healthcare and overwhelming our medical system! Not everyone thinks as you, and you are a true humanitarian. I work in the hospital and see so many sick and ill patients and a majority are under age 50, bedbound, morbidly obese, going blind, on HD (hemodialysis) and it's very saddening. If they were taught Dr. Fung's wisdom, maybe there would only be a few handfuls of stand-alone HD clinics instead of thousands of them across the country. Don't get me wrong, we still need HD for other reasons, but if HD was only used for type 2 diabetes, they'd shut down.

    I've known for a number of years now that the more (harder) I exercise, the hungrier I am. While training for a half marathon I gained 10 lbs over 4 months back in 2017. It was a bittersweet victory because it took me weeks after the race to get my appetite under control.

      Similar situation with me. I ran an hour of hard cardio every night for the last five years. This caused me to gain 20 pounds due to continuous carbohydrate cravings. Now in just a few weeks of keto pluse active movement (using a step counter). I have lost 25 pounds. Aggressive exericse is counterproductive as we get older.

    Always a pleasure listening to your videos Dr. Fung!
    I've always swam on and off my whole life. Years ago I needed to lose weight and started swimming daily to lose weight. And I did lose but as soon as my work schedule changed and I couldn't get to the pool every day, I quickly gained it all back. A little over a year ago I found your videos, read your books and have lost over 150 lbs.😁 and I'm still intermittent fasting to maintain. I started back swimming again last spring and now I swim over a mile just twice a week for averall health and I'm never hungry after I swim.
    I'm now lifeguarding at my pool and was talking to a man last week who is trying to lose weight and swims every day. I briefly told him my story and he was interested in learning more but doesn't do TH-cam so I brought him your The Obesity Code book to read😊.
    Thanks for all you do. Truly.🙏

Also I’m off met for min, I have lost over 60 pounds. I still eat once sometimes twice per day. But I cut out sugar and flour. I loved my breads and pastry but my health is more important. God bless you for sharing and all glory to God I knocked out type 2 diabetes. This is huge as I lost my grandpa to diabetes, dr amputated his leg and he never come out of the hospital. This makes so much sense of my extreme weight loss as a teenager on restricted carbs diet and exercising for 3 hours a day for 5 days a week. I had been morbidly obese and lost 65 # when I was 14-15 y.o. That was in the ‘70s when Dr. Irwin Stillman published a book on carb restriction which I was just lucky enough to come across from a neighbor who was excited about a diet (back then everything was a fad diet) that actually worked. I’d been fat all my life and nothing had worked, especially not the advice from registered dietitian fanatics who said you must eat a big healthy high-carb breakfast every morning (oatmeal and several servings of fruit) or you just weren’t really trying to lose weight.

    Building muscle mass has a lasting effect on fat percentage. (Lower weight despite muscle being heavier than fat)
    I was at a normal weight of 66kg for my height, zero sport. I did some moderate weight lifting and went to 62kg while increasing my food portions a bit. For my height, normal BMI range is 55-75kg.
    Effort to burn calories clearly doesn't work in my experience (I want to snack afterwards), but improving body strength made me move from a soft thin belly to a very lean belly.
    When I got bored of weightlifting and stopped, 3 months later I was back to 64kg and after 6 months with zero sports I was at 65kg. Some muscle must remain because that 65kg was significantly different on pictures than the 66kg of the start.
    Overall, this is far from being a game changer. Exercise isn't the way to fix obesity. It's the way to move from a slim soft body to a slim hard body.

    The biggest mistake I have made in my life is to fall for the ' exercise your way out of obesity ' idea . When I was young I was very sporting and very slim , bit probably my high carb diet ( pre processed food era ) was already setting me up for hyperinsulinemia .
    Life got in the way of exercise and I put on weight ( mainly a carb gut ) plus I went ' wholegrain vegetarian ' . So I always tried to exercise my way out of obesity . Never really works unless you become a triathlete or something . I have always enjoyed exercise , but now if I cycle or do long distance hiking I do it for the pleasure and health benefits but not for the weight loss . Eliminating wheat and IF has done more for my waistline in a year than the previous 20 years of huff and puff . I have found that if I am IF then HIIT training ( like 10 mins hard on an exercise bike ) puts my blood sugar in my boots and makes me very hungry ( which probably shows that I am not fat adapted yet ) but lifting weights doesn't . So if I do an extended period of IF then I do the weights . Here is a way to lose weight in the short term - eat less , exercise more 🙂. Here is a way to put on weight in the long term - eat less , exercise more ☹️.

      @michaeldillon3113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@MT-yx5cu Hi . I think if you look at all the good studies plus my own experience plus observation , the move more eat less model is largely based on willpower . Either your willpower breaks or exercising intensely causes some injury and then you can't exercise for a while . Result misery ! Rebound obesity is so common under the willpower model . The failure rate of the willpower model is so great that if it was a medicine it wouldn't be approved ! I have recently moved into a new phase in my keto journey - I am no longer obsessed with food ! I seem to be able to choose when I eat . This is something seriously different for me . I still have an appetite so I know that I am not constitutionally ill . If you are someone who can easily eat meat then you are in a better position than me . I didn't eat beef, pork , or lamb for over thirty years and still find it difficult . I can eat salmon , eggs , and poultry though . So my keto journey is a bit more challenging - but still very effective . I find the advice of Dr Fung , Dr Berry , and citizen activist Pastor Dennis to be life changing . Hope this helps .👍

    • @michaeldillon3113
      @michaeldillon3113 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@MT-yx5cu Another small technical fact I forgot to mention that Dr Fung has taught me is that if you reduce calorie intake your metabolic rate will go down because your body will think that food is scarce . If you fast then your metabolic rate goes up because your body thinks that there is no food so you better get the body ready to search for food . It is this lowering of metabolic rate that leads to rebound obesity .

      Diane, not sure what you mean? Muscles require energy, as does our brain 🧠 (~20% total daily calories), and our other organs consume energy. Fat storage requires little energy. Of course for muscles to burn significant calories, exercise is required. Please exercise a little for your brain, heart, and immune system. I’m only 71, so I can still exercise a couple hours a day.

      Fat burns no calories at all. Only muscle tissue burns energy. This is one reason we gain fat as we age (if we are sedentary). We lose muscle naturally as we age, and since it's the only tissue that burns energy, we gain fat. We can off-set that natural fat gain by maintaining our muscle mass (i.e. strength training).

  • @CarbageMan

    I’ve found that zone 1 and zone 2 cardio, while fasted accelerates fat loss. This is likely because the metabolism is increased while fasting and you are experiencing both ketosis and gluconeogenesis due to the energy demand. At the same time, the appetite remains blunted.
    Returning to a normal energy consumption after the fast may keep the metabolism boosted for weight loss. The challenge is not to overeat after the fast.

I eat again whenever I get hungry (around 4ish) with the meal being just high protein and fat and then I fast dinner. I also try to do a 36 hour fast or OMAD with lots of walking on my rest days (1-2 days a week) to help burn off fat. This routine has helped me to recomp my body by building muscle but still losing fat even though it’s a much slower process than when I did alternate day fasting. I agree with this. I’ve experienced an exception. I find that people I train that had large muscles in the past. As they resistance train, can make skeletal muscle gains much faster. Their hunger increases proportional to the exercise. So no calorie deficit. But as muscle size increases, their metabolism increases giving them a huge advantage when they calorie restrict and fast. It’s frustrating to others that train hard, fast properly and don’t get the same results. I read diet books. Many many diet books!!! Jason Fung’s are the best. It’s not even close. At different times in my life when I went back to exercise, aerobics, Zumba, pump, whatever, I lost a lot of weight, which is even better than it sounds because I also built heavy lean muscle. I didn't get hunger spikes either. Now that I'm quite senior and can't work out because of injuries I keep slim with keto and intermittent fasting and that definitely works too.

      I agree with you and Jason! I think the answer is what state is you body in while exercising. If one is carb addicted exercising with increase appetite. But if one is metabolically flexible or in ketosis , one can exercise and control appetite! I have completed a 45 min HIIT workout 24 hours into a fast and continued fasting for another 10 hours. I didn’t empty the fridge when I broke the fast!

    I'm a rather small person. Exercise allows me to eat more food and not gain weight. It's all a matter of balance. Obviously, I still need to eat a healthy diet. If I ate tons of processed food, I couldn't move enough to burn the calories. However, my regular exercise and a moderate carbohydrate diet, I can easily maintain my weight. According to my Fitbit, I go from needing only 1200 calories a day if I don't exercise to nineteen hundred when I do. That is a big difference.

    Back in the days of high school I was working out almost every day and was always extremely hungry and ate 5 times a day + snacks, it was a decent amount of food. After hurting my back I quit exercising but my appetite stayed the same and I started to gain weight. It took me some time to readjust my daily food intake to keep my weight still and reduce my appetite.
    I also noticed that now, even without daily workouts, if I go to swimming pool for instance or do any other activity, my appetite increases for the next day, then it becomes normal again.

    It would make sense that more energy expenditure would induce hunger. After all, a species whose desire for consuming energy was completely decoupled from the amount of energy that they expend would be a species that would be wiped out quite quickly. It would be like a car manufacturer producing cars in which the fuel gauge does not in anyway reflect the level of fuel in the tank. The car manufacturer would be quickly out of business when all their customers have vehicles that stall in the middle of the freeway. That is why intense exercise makes the endeavor to reduce caloric intake so difficult. While many do it, they do it by marshaling significant willpower to ignore their hunger signals. As the statistics prove, and as the avid gym goers who stay overweight year after year prove, despite a herculean effort at the gym, using exercise as a tool for weight loss is, with the exception of the most disciplined among us, an exercise in futility.

    A perfect companion video would look at the compensatory response to fasting.
    We all know one of the common criticisms of fasting is "If you skip breakfast, it will just make you overeat at lunch". Is that really true? What if you skip breakfast and lunch? Hunger has an upper limit and so does satiety. What ratio of fasting to feeding is needed to ensure the larger meals don't overcompensate for the fasting? What if we want to maintain or even gain weight while fasting for its other benefits?
    I'm sure this has been covered before in your books and videos, but it would be nice to see it summed up side by side with this video.

      Gaining weight via exercise is not necessarily a bad thing. Building up muscles means your weight might go up as muscles are more dense than body fat. In turn, more muscle mass not only means better balance and strength but also an ability to eat more healthy foods that we love without gaining more weight in the long run.
      Building muscle via exercise is how I am mitigating rapid weight loss.

  • @LTPottenger

    Weight lifting is fine to do fasted, the calories burned are negligible. Doing long intense cardio while fasted will burn a bunch of muscle and spike cortisol like crazy and make you hungrier. HIIT or moderate paced cardio where you don't breathe hard are much better for your health.

    • @cps_Zen_Run
      @cps_Zen_Run 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Human, it’s unlikely that you burn proteins. Our bodies recycle ♻️ 100-300 g of amino acids daily, just from replacing dead cells, etc. Our bodies are too smart to consume precious healthy muscles. Peace.

    • @LTPottenger
      @LTPottenger 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cps_Zen_Run You do. When I stopped running 15 miles a week my body exploded with muscle because I stopped constantly burning it. Now I bench 150 dbs and 400+ flat bench. When cortisol and insulin are high at the same time, you burn collagen. That is the main cause of cellulite in women.

    Yep. When I was young and thin and exercised a lot, rode a bike to work it made no difference to my weight. It firmed up my body very nicely, and it meant I had endurance but my weight never changed. If it didn't affect t my weight when I was thin why would it affect my weight when I was bigger?

    • @Denidrakes69
      @Denidrakes69 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you were fitter when you were younger, then you perhaps could put the same effort in for say two hrs a day, as you now use on thirty minutes a day. For me anyway, the fitter I am the more likely exercise is to kill my appetite, as opposed to increase it. However when I tried to do a similar amount after I'd healed from a broken foot, my appetite increased. I think what he's trying to say is don't rely on exercise for weight loss, and the harder the exercise is, the more you push yourself, the more likely it will be that hunger increases

    This answer only applies to me but No..excercise doesn't make me hungry because I eat plenty of complex fiber meaning not just flaxseed but oregano and grains and beans fiber is not for bowels but for regulating carbs and liver maintenance and much more fiber controls your appetite by slowly breaking down food which stops your appetite for a day or two..
