      Reminds me of my big brother who would take my action figures and go " Hey this would make a good such and such" I would of course go along with it just out of curiosity but still be a bit miffed all the same at times. But was most of the time worth the sacrifice/journey.

    I am envious of your Pound stores. The Dollar store where I live, where everything does cost only a dollar (at least they're being honest), sells items that aren't even worth a dollar. Fortunately there are other outlets for accumulating worthless junk that can be made into other less worthless junk. Why just this morning my trusty 20 year old toaster decided it would no longer hold down a slice of bread to make toast and do I despair about having to buy a new toaster (after all who fixes stuff anymore) - no. The first thing that comes to mind is - Parts! Not to mention taking stuff apart which is always a bonus. Your videos have done this to me.

  • @MarkMichalowski
    @MarkMichalowski 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The gridded page thing is a great tool for encouraging creativity and diversity: I used to teach graphic design, and when we were doing logo or poster design, I'd get the students to divide their page into four and to quickly sketch out four different ideas (as different as they could make them) before they decided on their final, worked-through design. Almost invariably, their first mini-design was NOT their final design, because the first mini was usually the "obvious" - and often less interesting - variant.
    Plus, of course, it hones your sketching/doodling skills and the small size stops you spending two hours going overboard on teeny weeny detailing.
    Nice one!

    That's a good one, Bill. So many ways to kick start creativity here. And the idea of putting limits on it is great -- like all of the prompts for creative writing I used to fill out for homework. I never really understood them as a student, but I get it now. If it's just the whole world full of ideas, it's too overwhelming. The brain shuts down. If I'm forced to work with a very limited range of options, it's like the brain says, "Ok, that's more reasonable. I can do something with this. Lots of things, actually." Well done showing us how this works with crafting as well.

    Definitely going to try the grid exercise in my sketchbook. I have often used the random shape exercise, where you fill up a page or pages with random shapes and then go back and turn them into something, but I definitely like the grid idea, leaves the process more in the hands of the imagination, forcing.more raw creative thought. Really enjoyed this one! Thanks for sharing!

    Lovely stuff as usual, although some of the pages of your sketchbook resemble the pictures that disturbed and possessed children draw with charcoal or black crayons whilst they're in sinister mental institutions, and then hide in a drawer, only to be found by the film's protagonist years later, and which give a clue to the nature of the demonic force that's trying to burst through into our reality.
    Just a thought.

  • @ellieriggart
    @ellieriggart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I agree, taking stuff apart or messing around with materials is really useful for generating ideas. I like doing thumbnail sketches; if I'm really struggling, I like to choose something that acts as a creative 'challenge', like a brief word or a rule I have to abide by in making the piece (like only using certain colours or having to include a specific item in the build). Although it sounds contradictory, I find that limitations lead to more creative ideas, as it gives me some structure to work around, if that makes sense. With the brief words, I like to choose vague words that have plenty of room to branch off from them (so rather than saying a "landscape", prompts like "chaos" or "confined" have much more lenience to them? I don't really know how to explain it haha).
    Also, I love the transitions in your videos, they kind of remind me of the ones in Bottletop Bill (I used to love that show lol)

    I don't know why, but I really must, "Subscribe... Go on... Do it." even though I am already subscribed. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.
    Your sketchbook looks absolutely wonderful. 5:31 Ranger Bot (left-hand page, second down, forth across) looks like a great character. I found this interesting and would like to see more of this sort of thing.
