Enjoyed hearing your perspective. I agree re: James - it's brilliant on many levels. Beloved is not an easy read, but I appreciate her dedication and creative writing style to bring the story and Sethe's perspective to life.
Haha oh no, "I fell asleep and didn't care"! 😂 I DNFd Harold Fry too I think, I can't remember why, but I guess that says something in itself. I had a pretty great reading month in terms of quality, but I would say they were pretty safe choices. Very happy about it nonetheless ^^ I didn't get to a lot of historical fiction, unfortunately, but I read that every now and then anyway. I want to get to Beloved and James at some point as well. I liked The Wager on audiobook (slightly slowed down), but there are also pictures and maps and things in the printed book which might add to it. I haven't seen them, but just wanted to say in case you like that kind of thing :)
Beloved is on my top favorite books and I've read it twice (planning to read it again). I think is absolutely brilliant, and a very important book about ptsd and trauma of the aftermath of slavery, but also of any other trauma also. I couldn't love her writing style more. I love this book all the way! I just finished James. I loved it, but I wanted more from it. Thinking about it, Beloved did for me what James didn't in terms of writing style. I think James was a great book that would have been greater if it was longer. Some significant relationships, including Huck's and Jim's I felt were undeveloped and left me wanting. I can say more about it because I don't want to spoil it. I gave it 3.75, but I still loved it. Beloved was a 10 stars for me, but I gave it 5 because that's the goodreads maximum.
I loved Miss Benson's Beetle! You're the first person I've heard talk about it! It was such a surprise fun read for me. I'm in the middle of James right now. I'm hoping to finish it this month.
