I think of you enjoy Emily St John Mandel's writing, you should consider trying Sea of Tranquility again. I think it's on the short side so not a big time suck... I'm curious to know if reading further changes your opinion of it.
Beatrix Potter warms my heart. I still need to read Braiding Sweetgrass. Thanks for the tag! 😊💙
I’ve had the Hidden Lives of Trees in my tbr but might skip that. Not being able to separate fact from opinion or personal experience is a no for me. I’m so sad you dnf’d Beartown though! I get how the tapestry of characters might not be for everyone, it’s quite slow paced and intricate, but I think it’s so well done. I also don’t read it as being about hockey, but about people and I actually think it’s quite a feminist book. You obviously don’t have to like it! I just thought it was great, so if you ever feel like picking it back up I would encourage it. I also have ESJM on my want to read, I can never keep it straight which one you’re supposed to start with. Have you read any that you liked?
@ellenmadebookclub I might try Beartown again one day. I would recommend Station Eleven out of all of Mandel's books!
These are some beautiful books! Thanks for the tag! I don't own too many physical copies of books but I will look around the house to see what I can find
The Ghost Map is going on my TBR right now! Great list 😊
me too!
Great recs! The Ghost Map one sounds very intriguing.
My page turner is THE LAST MRS PARRISH. I usually guess the end half way through books but this one kept me guessing until the last chapter. There are a couple of naught bits otherwise it’s suitable for anyone. I’ve read this book 3 times and I still can’t put it down.
@tbee2653 I've not heard of this book, I'll check it out. Thanks!
Hi Katherine, so glad you did this tag and also discovered Pat's channel! You got me intrigued with Diane Cook's book. I generally don't like much dystopian books but when I find the right ones for me I get hooked!
I recently hit a milestone so I thought I would share a gratitude tag. You were the first channel I came across. Pat is wonderful and she deserves the all the best and so do you. Subscribed! I’ll check the other channels out and show my support, as well. Great video. 😊 Flossy
Hi Katherine. Thank you so much for doing my tag. I really enjoyed your responses to the prompts. The Beatrix Potter books are indeed beautiful and joyful. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is a great choice for friendship. I think I would like Hyperbole and a Half. Braiding Sweetgrass is a perfect choice! Thank you again for doing this tag.
@BookChatWithPat8668 thanks for creating the tag, and congratulations again!
@ thanks so much!
This is such a clever tag! Loved hearing your answers...i also thin Sam is the perfect pick for the first prompt.
Hi Katherine, great tag! I loved hearing your answers to the prompts. Thank you for tagging me 🫶🏽. I did this tag a couple of weeks ago. 🙂
@@books_and_bocadillos Nice!
I love how we got to explore your wall throughout this video haha 😅 Just kidding! Great answers for this tag, Braiding Sweetgrass is one I want to get to at some point.
Thank you for yet another great video! Do you have the list of the books recommended?
hey!
My wife and I detested this The Glassmaker. The author makes the Renaissance characters sound like extras from a Quentin Tarantino film. One woman in the novel leers at a male, in the same way that the millennial males leer at young girls. A disingenuous piece of trash.
How did you kNOW The Serviceberry is already on my list?? For MYSELF lol 😆
Hello Katherine, great job with the tag! I watched the Netflix movie of All The Light We Cannot See, I am sure the book is even more engaging.. You got me interested in Evaristo's book.. And Madeline Miller.. I am such a fan... You're so right about Claire Keegan's writing.. did you know they're making a movie from Small Things Like These?
@Uncommon_Reader I am so looking forward to the Small things like These film!
Interesting books! I agree that the prompts require some thought 😊 I was tagged by Emily as well, but haven’t gotten to it yet. Thank you for tagging me!
I read 100 years of solitude earlier this year and I absolutely struggled as well. The whole book feels like an introductory chapter that is giving you a potted history and some context before the story kicks in, the fact that everyone has the same names over several generations really didn’t help. Where it kinda clicked for me was when I stopped trying to keep track of who was who and instead just let it wash over me as more of a mood piece. That helped and I did end up enjoying it by end, but the struggle was definitely real.
@TheBookThing I agree! I ended up passively reading it, rather than trying to keep track of everything.
Great video and recommendations based on tags that aren't so common. Love the originality, thank you for another great video!
I finished my first ever read of 100 Years of Solitude just a couple of months ago, and had never read any Marquez beforehand. I must confess despite my usual suspicion over charts that hail book as objectively brilliant or "the best" of a certain era or category, the book did shoot up in my ranks right to the very top, and I'd still say on reflection its one of the best novels i have ever read. You are absolutely right about the confusion that at times became frustrating to me too, regarding names, even if you try to submit to its confusion. If you were to be inspired to re-read (which i hope you are one day) I would say: read over at least 2/3 months as the primary advice to enjoying it more. Second but definitely important in terms of my enjoyment of the book was to actually engage with good habits such as writing my own interpretations and summaries after each chapter in my reading journal, so that I could take time to put the book down and return without being overwhelmed by where I had rejoined the story. I also drew a little web of names linked together by relation to remember who was who, and read online summaries of previous chapters I had read if I had returned to the book after a long time without reading. It truly is a very dense book. but dense with so many positives in my opinion too, so any way that you can think of making the reading experience work for you I would implore you to try, as I really found reaching the end so fulfilling.
@@joecollins7859 Great advice! Some books definitely benefit from being savoured slowly and taking notes. Thanks for your comment 😀
I audiobooked the first LOTR and it was a real struggle ! I guess it might get better in the second book but for me I'll stick to the films 😂
@inespele3652 I think I would struggle to listen to LOTR. Too much going on and complicated names!
I just wanted to add here that there are so many great comments already - thank you! Be sure to have a look at the other comments for some great perspectives and persuasive arguments! 😊
I loved the first 2 books of the Jean Auel series but beyond that the stories are too fantastical and defy belief.
@tbee2653 good to know!
Hi from Spain! If you ask me, "100 years of solitude" should lost enormously in translation: the lyricism of the language, the rhythm, suggesting more than saying around time and solitude, the subtle humor, the play with the names of the characters and even the author's mania against adverbs finished by -ly. So, as long as you like family sagas and magical realism, I´ld say that a very accurate translation is a must and not the word by word but deep meanings. The writer said the translation to english made by Gregory Rabassa was better than his original book. In any case I´d recommend to make a first try with Garcia Marquez with "Chronicle of a foretold death", around a hundred pages and easier plot, and not with the "100 years...". I hope my english is no so bad as not being able to make myself understood. As far as I can, I always try to read the great writers in theirs original languages; not easy but rewarding.
@pilarglez7204 this is such an important point! The quality of the translation and nuance in language is crucial. I will check out the short book you mention. Thanks for your input on this post!
Hi. What an interesting channel. I'm sure I'm going to sound extremely negative. I did read Clan of the Cave Bear when it came out and enjoyed it quite a bit. I have so many books lined up to read and I'm a slow reader and am 68 years old so I am not planning to reread that book or the follow up books to it even though I think I would enjoy them. It seems like everyone else who is a serious reader absolutely loves The Lord of the Rings series. I read The Hobbit and the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy but did not like them at all. I just don't get it. I've also read some books that were recommended on book tube which were fantasy types too - Piranesi and Circe and didn't like them at all either. The only other book you mentioned that I've read is One Hundred Years of Solitude. I'm glad you mentioned that one because I slogged through it and absolutely hated it. I don't understand why it won the Nobel Prize. I just got seriously interested in reading a couple years ago when I came across book tubers. Since then I've probably bought 50 -100 books. I've got them in boxes and am afraid to count them. Great to come across your channel.
@betsymaher9489 Great to have you here. Thanks for your comments!
@@betsymaher9489 Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded for the entire career of a writer. From your comments it's pretty easy to guess that you're not the target reader for García Márquez and, even less, for that specific book. Luckily, the Nobel jury usually has a much broader reading background and, for me, as experts, their decisions deserve respect even if I were not able to appreciate them.
I enjoyed your post and your challenging questions! I’ve read three of the books/series you mentioned and have moved The Great Circle farther up my TBR because any book that has you thinking about it months after reading deserves a look. A previous poster summed up the Lord of the Rings question perfectly: if you enjoyed the trilogy, there’s no reason not to read the appendices. At best you’ll want to read more Tolkien, at worst you probably gave up. I remember the Clan of the Cave Bear trilogy fondly and read book as they were published. I’m sure the historical fiction aspect of the third book has taken a hit given what we now know about Neanderthals but I’d still recommend the read. I’m a huge fan of Marquez and One Hundred Years of Solitude, but I love magical realism. I’m definitely not prepared to convert you (yet!) but give me a few days and I’ll repost something.
@@sarahmarton7251 thanks for your feedback - great perspectives on these books!
No to GGM, waste of time. 4 out of 6!
I thought Body Keeps the Score is really valuable, but there were disturbing parts to read, so would give content warnings. 3 for 4! We should do one of those compare-libraries apps to see how much overlap we have... 🤪
I HAVE This Changes Everything and tried a few months ago...hasn't made it off the table. Will be getting to No Logo first, an even OLDER book! lol 2 for 2!
I have read LOTR multiple times, but only read through the prose of the appendices. I can NOT with Tolkien and his poetry, unless it's sung! 🤣
I'm probably the wrong person to consult about Tolkien, because nothing about Tolkien's writing is a struggle for me - I've been a voracious Tolkien fan my entire adult life. I think if you've read and enjoyed the Lord of the Rings, there's no reason not to read the appendices. They provide even more context and information about events and characters, and IMO, some of Tolkien's most beautiful prose is contained in the section about Aragorn and Arwen. I would consider it a shame for someone to skip that just because it's contained in the appendices.
@ChantalsShelfLife such a great point! If you're a big fan of Tolkien's writing, then you can never get enough. Thanks for your thoughts!
I've been quite put off by some things I heard about My Body Keeps The Score and the author, I'm planning to read What My Bones Know instead. Great Circle is on my TBR :- ) I really like the concept of this video where you open up the recs for discussion :- )
@@OnlyIfForAPage I haven't heard of What My Bones Know, I'll check it out!
Thank you for doing the tag Katherine, sorry for the delay but I don't receive notifications .. I need to check my settings 😅 Your choices are always so interesting, I am quite intrigued by books selected for Booker Prize, but before reading James I need to catch up with the classic first! First time I hear of Natsuo Kirino and I looked for her at my library online catalog and they have quite a selection of her books. This one you mention, OUT, in Italian is called The Four Housewives of Tokyo.. so curious now!
@Uncommon_Reader Out is so good! I very much recommend of you like thrillers.
This was so fun! Love it and Sam was the first one I thought of as well 😂 Thank you for the tag!
Ahh I thought of Sam as well, I watched your video while checking on the potato gratin in the oven and was like “boil ‘‘em mash ‘‘em put ‘em in a stew!” And then you had that exact scene in the video 😆 I’ll have to think about my answers for this one. Thanks for tagging me! 😊
I am not a fan of Dystopians in general but sometime I find some that are quite intriguing. I loved 2023 Booker Prize winner The Prophet Song by Paul Lynch and The Wall by John Lanchester (2019) I'll make a note of your 5 stars selection, thank you!
@@Uncommon_Reader I'd like to get to The Prophet Song!
@@RaspberryReads glad to hear it. It's incredibly suspenseful, and his writing is exquisite!

The Familiar isn't bad for an autumn read - some "dark magic" vibes, though it's heavy on the historical fiction end of things - which I enjoyed. The Broken Earth Trilogy is absolutely amazing - can't wait to hear your thoughts!
I absolutely adored secret life of bees. It's one of my all time favourite books. I hope you enjoy it too.

Thanks for responding to the tag Katherine! I love your mug! I finally read my first Tracy Chevalier with her latest 'The Glass Maker'.. (as you know 😉) would definitely want to read more from her... I am also a huge fan of Circe in Madeline Miller's version. Loved Keegan's book too! Great picks Kate!
Greetings from Montreal! Where were you when you were in Canada? Great to see Canadian authors highlighted on your list!
@@LifeisGoodLiveFully From Vancouver, but Ottawa originally! 🇨🇦
Sounds like a great summer or reading! I thought The Maid was an ok story, but I didn’t think she really did much in terms of solving the mystery, and I also had a hard time with the portrayal of her neurodivergence, which isn’t stated just implied, I don’t know, I felt it could have been done better I guess. Since it isn’t very common, I think I have higher expectations when it is done, even though I appreciate that it was done at all… I agree about Yellowface though, I enjoyed listening to it for a while, it’s a gossipy kind of feel so it has a kind of guilty pleasure vibe to me, but as it went on I just got so sick of her complaining of the situation she had created herself and the whole thing just felt pointless. Not a book I would recommend either, but for the FOMO and having read it as a referent point in discussion of other books.
I really enjoyed The Maid but probably not enough to read the sequel. I like Claire Keegan but I almost wish that in Foster there was more time spent with the characters so that I could connect with them a bit more. Great wrap-up!
Spot on with Claire Keegan; I fell in love with Foster and have been binge reading her since August. I tries audiobooks for her novels but found I was much more immersed when reading her, as her books are brief, but her words so impactful. Thank you for the recs on Tracy Chevalier, been wanting to read her for a long time and didn't know where to begin.
