Because when the sport was started in 1860's you couldn't throw or carry the ball it had to be kicked or swatted or bounced off a body part till you reached the end zone or the ball could be kicked directly through an upright goal post. Plus each drive was started with a kick off and was ended with a kicked extra point also it was based upon Soccer and Rugby so to pay homage to Fútbol they named the game Football it wasn't till 1880 when Harvard and Yale played a more Rugby Style game were you could carry the ball and used kicking less to score and more to change possession of the ball from one team to the other through either a punt or a kickoff and they just never changed the name cause people already knew the sport as football

Their comedies are certainly very funny but these 2 guys are super underrated dramatic actors. John C Reilly especially is one of the best character actors of this generation. Magnolia, Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Chicago, Cyrus, the Lobster, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Gangs of NY, Perfect Storm, etc. All great roles.

Can’t be called football if you play it with your hands, you kick occasionally otherwise hands only, as such is called handball not football...

@Viktor Moreland in handball you kick the ball a few times in a whole game probably not more than 7 or 8 times in a whole game of 60 minutes once you kick it you can not kick it again while playing the actual game... In football you kick the ball around for 90 minutes and only one player can touch it with the hands (the goalkeeper) if the other players actually touch it with the hands it is a penalty or foul... I get it that facts are not important in this country anymore but if you play it with your hands is called handball, real football is played with the feet.
Actually brits should call it feetball. You use both feet while America uses one to kick.
No Fuss I don’t think the name is about the amount of extremeties you use to play it but the name of the objects you play with... but I got to say thinking of a football game were players only use the right or left foot is kind of funny... can you imagine naming handball 2 hands 1 ball occasionally 1 foot... or basketball 1 basket 1 ball or baseball 1 ball 1 glove 1 bat I mean if you want to be literal with naming...
Hector Beltran Like Viktor said, your so called “Handball” is an American dominant sport. They’re not going to change the name. I come from a Spanish speaking country, and we call both sports, “Futbol” and “American Football”. I’ve even seen some of my countrymen adapt and call the sport Soccer. Not once have I ever heard anyone complain about the soccer name. This bitterness seems to be a European thing. All I’m saying is that the soccer name isn’t going to be changed anytime soon. From my understanding, our “French Fries” are called “Chips” in England. I would never go to England and ask for Fries, I would ask for Chips. I understand that names are different, so I would adapt and call things accordingly. Soccer and American Football are names that are easier for us to differentiate. This is why I believe we call them different names. All I’m saying is that I’ll respect another culture when I’m in their country, and as an American I would expect the same from everyone else.
