    Welcome to a SAFE comments section! I know this is the internet and all, but I have some rather old-fashioned beliefs about treating other humans with RESPECT, and therefore I will delete any unkind comments. Thanks so much for your thoughtful and courteous participation - I look forward to hearing from you!

    Glad the algorithm got me to your content pal. What a genuine chap. I think you would get along great with the dungeon dudes here on TH-cam. Maybe a colab? They are also Canadian rpg folks who seem to be cut from the same vine as yourself friend. Struggle on fellow struggler.

    Thanks, Josh. I backed Arydia for $1 so I can make a decision later. I'm in Australia and Gloomhaven, which I haven't played, is half the cost of Arydia. I bought Jaws of the Lion and I hope I can play it a few times before Arydia's Pledge Manager opens and I have to commit any dollars. I solo game a lot and I'm now wondering if it is cheaper just to buy a computer game for my RPG fix...

    • @joshyaks
      @joshyaks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great point, Paul: an RPG computer game would be much cheaper and would probably provide a similar experience. And I really hope you get to Jaws of the Lion soon and get to experience the awesomeness that is Gloomhaven!

    I’ve looked into Arydia. The wip rulebook is excellent. Most typos will be fixed. But the main problem is the story writing. I don’t see the maker of Xia as an experienced plot writer.
    Also, the creature diversity is very limited. Compared to aftermath which also has 23-ish creatures, that doesn’t have to limit a great story, but in Arydia’s case it’s a red flag.
    Especially when all those TH-cam influencers only showed rats, rats and more rats. Nothing else. Huge red flag.
    People will likely dump Arydia on the secondary market and when you wait a year or two you can be sure to pick it up cheap.

    • @joshyaks
      @joshyaks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, my own experience with heavily narrative-based board games is that usually the quality of the writing just isn't up to professional standards. Great point about the secondary market - I'm in no rush as I have plenty of great games to keep me busy in the meantime!

    • @kosterix123
      @kosterix123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joshyaks I wish it wasn't up to professional standards. Most narratives are in fact elementary school level or slightly above. And the saving on not hiring editors pains the eye with typos and grammar mistakes.
      Legendary Kingdoms 1, so-called veteran dungeon master writer, constantly confuses party-knowable information with player-knowable information.
      Latest example: L99 Bullet ♥card Young-Ja Mischevious. Which was corrected from an earlier typo (see bgg image) but corrected incorrectly. In everyone's production copy. Sigh...

    My opinion is that an online version of a board game would never give the same experience as the boardgame itself (at least for me). To be able to physically touch the gameparts, move them, interact with them, flip and read cards is something of an activity that gives a brain a much more different feeling and experience than clicking with a mouse and watching a screen (which we all do too much of course). The brain needs to rest from these devices, and playing boardgames are hell of a rest (even it is being active). I would personally even think that a game like Gloomhaven would never draw my attention on PC when we have ones that are faster paced (like for example Diablo back in the days). But on a table in front of you? Even solo, but especially with others? That's something! I am personally really annoyed by my game mates when they are picking up their phones (FIFA worldcup... meh...) even for seconds. It is just putting back your brain into the everyday state, preventing it from resting. I occasionally take out my phone (for exapmle to take pictures) and I notice it on myself this too, its like a soft erease of the game in my head and then I need some time to get back into the flow. So, play games offline guys :)

    • @joshyaks
      @joshyaks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've tried playing board games with people online via Yucata and Board Game Arena, but like you, I much prefer the aesthetics of handling various physical components and interacting with people in person. However, I have bought some app versions of board games on Steam to play on my PC when I'm in the mood for some solo gaming (which isn't very often). As for phones, a while back when I made a video about the top 10 qualities that I look for in gaming opponents, people who keep their phones away while playing were near the top of that list!

    The best part of a "green" legacy game is that once the campain is over you can replay it, and do it differently. I have Clank Legacy and Betrayl Legacy, both of which I dont actually destroy cards I just put in a bag labled "destroyed" so that after the campain is over i can bring them back into the game if I want to.
    One and Done "true" legacy games to me has a disvalue to them because they are not really replayable..

    • @joshyaks
      @joshyaks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally get where you're coming from. My own opinion on "green Legacy" varies greatly depending on the lens through which I happen to be looking:
      From an environmental standpoint, I absolutely love the non-destructive/replayable aspect!
      From a game play standpoint, I absolutely hate it! The permanent additions/destruction are what give the decisions made in true Legacy games such gravity, and it's so exciting to create something from which there is no going back!
      From listening to some board game hobbyists complain about the permanent alterations in Legacy games, I really can't stand the hypocrisy. A gamer will have a collection of dozens if not hundreds of games, many of which have never been played and many of those never will be, and of the rest of their games they'll be doing well if most of them ever see more than two or three plays. Yet they'll complain that they can no longer replay a Legacy game after completing the 10- or 20-game campaign, or however long it ends up being!
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts and your method of keeping your games replayable!

      @@joshyaks it's not just that, but you also can't resell a used legacy game. So what value does it have after being play compared to other games?
      It's a board game with a set amount of uses and then NO one can get use out if it anymore. Can't even donate it to Goodwill

    • @joshyaks
      @joshyaks  ปีที่แล้ว

    I do want to give Arydia a go, but not sure if it is standing out compared to a lot of amazing looking similar games that are coming out. Of course, 'till the reviews come out it is hard to really know how each feels.

      Hi! Arydia is still in production, and since it ended up being too expensive for me I didn't pledge for it when it crowdfunded. As a result, I haven't looked at it again since making this video. That being said, a big adventure game that DOES look like it would be worth the high cost is Agemonia!

      @@joshyaks Thank you for the video nevertheless. TBH, dungeon crawler +RPG kind of games is literally new to me. And off lately I am tilting more towards non euro games, especially the ones where there is narrative driven cooperative and can also be played solo.
