The eponymous Journey actually begins! Sure hope this doesn't take another eighty-three chapters. OH WAIT
Sun Wukong is back, and better than ever! Or… well, or worse, depending on your point of view. He's getting up to shenanigans again, which is generally pretty problematic - but you know what, he's doing stuff, and that's the important thing.

Ok so what I’ve read from the book:
Sun Wukong is canonically about 4 feet tall
    (Tiny but mighty XD)
Tripitaka has 4 toes on his left foot
    (Uh- yeah)
By safe distance, we mean over 6 miles away
Sun grew a moss beard while under the mountain
    (Idk I found it funny-)
Trip and Sun got along pretty well, Trip even giving Sun a nickname
    (Pilgrim, the nickname was Pilgrim)
Anddddd Sun stole one of Trips old shirts, and Trip didn’t really care
(Very friendly until the bandit part)
And that’s the end of extra facts Friday!

@The AMV girl That’s why I’m here! To give you the unimportant details and “8 chapter power up sequences”!
As per request, a few more facts:
-Trip once thought that Sun, Sandy and Pigsy were committing cannibalism, but it was actually just a infant shaped fruit!….Ok who wrote this
-At one point, Sun decided to prove to Pigsy that the horse was actually a dragon, and so he slapped the horse and bam! Five seconds later both Longma and Trip are at the top of the mountain they’d been climbing
-Sun is the eldest brother, Pigsy is the middle child, Sandy is the youngest, Longma is the family pet who also happens to talk if he wants to, and Trip is the ever tired guardian. They really are one big family! (Hehe)
-Sun doesn’t cry very often, (unlike Trip who cries every other chapter) in fact throughout the 14 years this Journey took I’ve only counted him crying about 5 times. And most of them were because he felt useless at the time/ couldn’t figure out an immediate way to save Trip
-To piss off Pigsy, Sun once stabbed him in the face while in the shape of a woodpecker. (Rude)
-There was an entire 3 pages of the book which were merely dedicated to a woodsman and fisherman arguing about who was better with endless poems
-Sun has an alter ego/con name,
‘Grimpil Sun.’ Sounds nothing like his actual name, ‘Pilgrim Sun,’ right? NOBODY could tell the difference!
      (Idiot)
That’s it for extra facts! :)

-Tripitaka’s mother and father were reunited with him at one point, but as it currently stands only Trip and his dad are still alive
-It takes the disciples about 3 seconds to go into ‘protect Trip mode’ at the first sign of danger and it STILL never works to stop him being kidnapped

He’s not allowed to. Pilgrim monk has to make the journey himself and experience all 80+ different trails and tribulations on his journey in order to be qualified to take the scriptures. Monkey, sandy and piggy were only supposed to be his “bodyguards” on this journey. Monkey could never be “qualified enough” (qualified defined by being pure of hear, holy, etc…) to take the scripture, neither would sandy nor piggy.

Wukong actually visited the Buddha a few times to ask for his assistance during their journey, but he himself wasn't allowed to take the scriptures back to his master in an instant, only Tripitaka would be qualified to do so after he has overcome 81 trials and tribulations. Like Red stated, JTTW is an allegory for one's spiritual journey to enlightenment, and the valuable life lessons the characters learn along the way from all the hardship they're put through. It's not simply a story about a group of characters trying to finish a task/achieve their objective (taking the scriptures from the west back to the east), that's not the point of the story. JTTW should be taken more symbolically and metaphorically, rather than literally. The "journey" really is the journey of their souls, not their physical bodies.

Also the monk Xuanzang/Tripitaka wanted to make the journey to the west by foot so that he and his disciples could perform acts of charity for the small folk of the world.
It's one thing to preach it, but Tripitaka originally left his temple to put his Buddhism knowledge to work.
There are many times in the story where Sun Wukong and the group run into a problem (Demon, natural disaster, etc.) and think "What a pain, let's take a shortcut" only for Tripitaka to Professor Xavier the group say something along the lines of " We are a group of superpowered individuals, if a less fortunate person runs into the same problem and our negligence contributed to their death, it would be tragic because the suffering could've been avoided".
    And they superhero it up.

Fun fact: Sanzang (the character) is based on Tang Xuanzang (the RL inspiration) of the early Tang dynasty, who, at age 27, trekked all the way from China to India and back to retrieve Buddhist sutras. It took him nearly 20 years, and instead of having 3.5 divine disciples to aid him on his journey, he had royal backing from several Buddhist kings on the road. He then spent the rest of his life translating the 600+ texts he brought back, and died at the ripe old age of 62. His travels are recorded in the *Great Tang Records on the Western Regions*, the text that inspired Journey to the West (written in the Ming dynasty).

I'd like to add that many stories from 'Journey to the West' have long existed in folk traditions, some even dating back to China's Three Kingdoms period, such as the character Erlang Shen. These stories were traditionally passed down through oral performances by storytellers in teahouses, which is why 'Journey to the West' has chapters, similar to today's television series, with a new 'Hui' told each day. It wasn't until the end of the Ming Dynasty that a person named Wu Cheng'en compiled these stories more closely, giving us the 'Journey to the West' we see today.

Fun Fact: Zhu Wuneng's actual name was 猪八戒 (Zhu Bajie) and before he became a demon, he was 天蓬元帅 (Tianpeng Yuan Shuai), a general of guards in heaven.
Due to his celestial being status, he could not get married or fall in love with anyone but alas, he falls in love with the moon goddess, Chang Er who was the most beautiful goddess in Chinese folklore. Worse still, he was the one that failed to stop Sun Wukong at the banquet so as a punishment, he was banished to earth as a pig demon to atone for his sins but due to his odd scenario with Guanyin, Guanyin granted him a chance to atone for his sins by assisting Tripiṭaka aka Tang Sanzang, to the far West.
The white horse too also had beef with Sun Wukong. Just before Sun Wukong was locked in the Five Palm Mountain (Yes it's called "Five Palm", not "Virtue"), he had a row with the white dragon and Sun whacked his brother to death with the rod (He din't become a horse because he flooded his father's palace. He's a water dragon ffs. How is he gonna drown his own house with water when he can make and lives in water?) that Sun had and as a act of revenge, both the white dragon and Sun fought instantly when meeting which caused a whole village to be drowned due to the attacks by the white dragon. Seeing that he's doing more harm in fighting Sun, he told Guanyin about the issue when she realized shit was going down and to atone for his sins, Guanyin turned him into a horse and told him that if he was to help Tang Sanzang in his mission, his atrocities would be pardoned with the forgiveness of Sun who, at this point, also admitted his impulsiveness in killing the white dragon's brother thus the white dragon turns into a horse and off to the West the 5 of them went.

is the character that makes most of the plot-governing decisions

The reason why Monkey can't have the monk ride with litterally on the cloud to ride to India is not because anyone even the purest of soul like the monk can ride on it. Its because mortals are too heavy to ride on a cloud and Tripitaka must go through these trials. 81 trials with Monkey, Pigsy, and Sandy. Even the author knows that plot hole.

Also, the emperor had to hold that Great Mass cuz he ALSO died and came back to life, but while he was dead he promised to hold a Great Mass for the souls of the Unjustly Slain. So, yeah, stupidly complicated. Also, guess what I got for Christmas.
