  • Join us as a skilled suspension specialist fixes the Rally-Raid performance suspension on my Honda CRF300L dualsport bike.
I traveled hundreds of kilometers to get this service done but it was definitely worth it. I will absolutely consider getting a new custom suspension setup done for my Tenere later there too. Would you like to see a detailed video series with these guys building a setup for the bigger bike too?
I will be testing this newly serviced CRF300L setup at an Enduro track later. Will try do do that during winter if the track is driveable but if not its going to be in the spring at the latest.
Even Chase Jarvis has been a customer at this awesome garage so servicing my little Honda was probably the easiest job they had that week 😊
I hope you enjoyed the video!
    This video is NOT sponsored.
I paid for the service with my own money.

Just got done riding a local Enduro track today. The track was very wet and muddy but there were a few spots where I could ride some whoops and I didnt bottom out even once. Night and day difference after this service! 🎉

Great video, shows that suspension service is not so easy that you might think...

I've only just started looking around at the problems w/ this bike's suspension but I have to say that I've not seen ANY shop
quite as clean or specialized as this one. Truly they've invested in doing this right. Some might wipe off the forks before
working but these guys throw them in a bath. I'm amazed & I'll be looking for a place like this in America. Great video!

This bike has such a soft front end that it's almost a danger for a front washout..... might get the ABS just to make
sure not to have a problem but it's also b/c of all the varying conditions on the roads..... gravel/debris, ect.

The stock setup is definitely super scetchy in many situations. Rally raid works amazingly now that it is properly installed.

    • @user-dv7hb2sc9m
      @user-dv7hb2sc9m 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yeah & I think if I do buy this Rally version I'll probably add the ABS package. Just to make sure I have better ability
to stop w/o washing out the front end. I'm all subb'd UP so I'll be asking more later. peace

ABS works well offroad too so its overall a good option to have for most riders.

I've been researching for 6months & have 7-8 dual sport bikes. I know each one of them including all the MOD's
that would be needed & their costs. I've even figured out how feasible each upgrade/mod would be to get done
but I've just found the Rally version, put it on my short list, and now I think I'm sold on it to fit my "Intent" for a
bike. INTENT & Costs are the two main factors but I honestly don't think most guys have a clear vision of what
they want a bike for...lol, other than to ride. I'm with you now so I'll be digging thru your stuff as I continue to
save money for a purchase. The extra $$ for ABS might be a wise expenditure for me at my ago & ability.
Thanks for posting the video & for your time. peace

Good luck with the tower build today. And thanks for this video. I was pretty sure it was exactly the problem you described. I have no experience with offroad suspension tuners yet, but I had one of the best in Germany for my (asphalt) racebike. Lots of question about you, your riding style, your laptimes, your tyres, your feeling... And then just perfect. Eye-opening. Worth every penny. Looking forward to seeing you come back on the motocross track with the little Honda. Happy days, Günter/Nürnberg

Thanks for this. I’ll have to do the same for mine as I went word for word by the install instructions which called for the same amount of oil that was initially in yours.

Yep. The instructions are a bit unclear in my opinion too.

@@PatchedBandit I just serviced mine. Almost 600ml went into the left fork. It took forever to bleed the damper all the way. I also put more oil in the right leg to keep the spring lubricated better. I didn’t like hearing it grinding against the tube. Haven’t ridden it yet, but it seems to feel better.

@@PatchedBandit After doing some moderately hard riding, I was still bottoming out. I ordered a set of the 4.2N springs from Rally Raid and just installed them today. I’ll let you know how it goes after I ride again. I have the direct link to the springs that RR gave me if anyone needs them. I don’t think you can click to them from their website as they usually don’t sell them separate.

I've installed RR L1 two weeks ago and found it quite easy. Half of the work is just new seals install. I didn't drill the tube, spring circlip is easy to remove by a pick or thin screw driver, no even need to disassemble the fork for that.
The airing was easy too. Just follow the instructions and fill the cartridge from bottom. That way it's 90% aired before you even begin. Then bolt it tight and turn around. You can see oil level from the top, so just add more until the level is merely 10cm or at least visible and keep airing until damping works all the way up and no more bubbles can be heard. Check and fill the oil level. Done.
What wave to do again and different, was new seal lubing. Lubing it with fork oil and wipe the rest resulted in significant stiction. I had to take it apart and lube both seals and dust covers with bearing grease. The result is much better but still not great. It seems like these dual compound seals has high stiction, unlike OEM hard NBR. Maybe it reduces over time with wear.

  • @carpenter751

I installed the full size setup myself on my bike just a home mechanic but i followed one of rally raids videos that specifies the bleeding of this fork. Ralley Raid made the video but the instructions that come with the fork did not have the instructions that let me know how to properlly bleed the damper which is only on one fork leg so if your having problems just go to Rally Raids you tube channel watch that video and follow those directions to a T. Bleeding it takes alot of time from what i remember and you have to pour a little oil in at a time while covering the screw hole at the bottom of the fork while also cycling the fork up and down.
Anyways the suspension is amazing and is so much better than stock. Stock suspension feels like a cheap bicycle when compared to this setup.

Fill from the bottom just the specified amount of oil to get started. Then move to the top to do final filling to spec and bleeding air. I misinterpreted initially and kept filling more from the bottom and wound up way overfilling. Pretty easy job as long as you don't get caught out by those details.

Did you ever back off your fork preload after testing? : )
I have questioned if my oil levels are correct. If I remember correctly, the L2 directions were to put 600ml in the spring only fork, and the 400ml remaining in the cartridge fork. It made sense, because the cartridge takes up volume, but ?. I have the stiffest 4.2N/mm springs, and bike starts to feel very harsh hitting little bumps at over about 5 clicks in on compression.
Looking forward to your follow-up, testing both landing jumps and on 100mm+ rocks like a creek bed or rocky trail. It seems an elusive balance between comfortable road ride, not bottoming jumps and not bouncing around too much over rocks! Maybe a softer seat is required to alleviate the harsh road feedback?
    Thanks for another great video!

    • @PatchedBandit
      @PatchedBandit  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Most bikes that perform well over jumps are a bit hard compared to basic road setups. I will post some more when I get to ride it proper after this service visit.
I might upgrade the same 4.2 spring you have later if I feel that after I get a good test in first. But this is probably already so much better now that I might be fine with the current springrate.
Oh and no I never backed out of the preload :)
