    Sam what is so cool about your channel is that you show all of us that you don't need a fancy boat with all the trimmings to go sail along the US coast and have a great time. I love museums and that one looked pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.

    Hi Sam. Just reading The Frigate Constitution and other Historic Ships by Alexander Magoun. Coincidentally, you visited the Constitution in Boston, But more over you have just weighed anchor at the very spot where the Mayflower anchored in Nov 1616.Great to see a ship and a place from that wonderful book. Thanks from japan. gary

    You can get a plastic base for those fuel cans. It's made to make them more stable but would probably be good at protecting your counter from rust too.

  • @bradmottishaw467

    A tip for any pressurized can that can rust on the bottom is to buy a cheap can of rubberized tool handle dip and just dip the bas in and then set aside for it to set. viola no more rust :)

    SO sad that windmill. When I was a kid we went in there and saw them stone grind flour. The best part of the island, is way out towards great point miles and miles of deserted beaches that are all in conservation. Inlets with horse shoe crabs, and oysters that are farmed out on conservation land! One of my dreams is sailing back to the head of the harbor!!

    Hey Sam, not sure if you know this small boat shower trick? Get a two litre (1/2 gal?) plastic bottle with a handle and lid. Drill small holes in lid and a breather hole in the handle. Half fill with cold water then top up with hot water from kettle, then shower in cockpit. It's just enough to wet yourself down, then soap up and rinse off. I've had one for years, great for camping too. :)

    I like your tape-fuel-can-rust-fix. I will try that on my rustmakers for sure!
    The trick with the cape is: use the canal if you can its much easier
    The trick with the canal is: pray to the buzzards of the bay for a compliant combination of tide and wind.
    Hopefully the lack of a shower builds up a layer of germs that kill covid on contact.

      Not showering doesn't mean he doesn't wash. I was homeless living in my car 3 years, went months between showers but washed every single day, sometimes twice. And on hot summer nights behind the church in the shadows beneath a crab apple tree I would luxuriate under a cold running garden hose at 2 am at least twice a week. And while I was at it I get my shirts shorts and underwears good and washed. Then pass out rocked back in the front seat parked way in the back under the trees, windows down as crickets and cicadas swooned were the night sounds

    Modern whaling is horrible and usually unnecessary, but the history of whaling is a big party of nautical history and very interesting. Every whaling museum I've seen or heard of seems to be a great resource on the subject while also not promoting it as a needed activity. I'm sure that is not always the case. The one you went to looks to be part natural history of the species as much as it was about the industry.

    Looking to get a boat with my wife. who do you use for insurance?

    • @billmoran3812

      Insurance? If you plan to actually sail anywhere, forget insurance. Spend your money on maintenance. Insurance won’t save your life. Maintenance will.

    You've sailed a lot. And I notice you go for a tiller. Do you consider tiller better than wheel? Pros and cons if you don't mind.

    • @samholmessailing
      @samholmessailing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Tiller is better. Tiller has better feel for the boat, simpler to install self steering, less maintenance and stuff to fail. Wheels make you look better in photos and gives you a nice binnacle to brace against when moving around the cockpit.
