Why people buy old cars? Because they like the feeling of an old car. Why people buy new electric cars? Because they like the feeling of owning a car whats doesn't make that much damage to the Earth, and olso the feeling (maybe the features too). If you turn an old petrol car to electric it wil loose the old car feeling, it makes the car feeling to a weird thing, and most of the people who buy the old cars don't wont a weird feeling in it mostly if the car wasn't cheap! I think!

Márton I think people who did not have the chance to experience these old cars but love their look and what they stand for, will love the blend of a modern powertrain with the old school flair of the car. I am interested in this car for this reason. Beautiful (E type after all) and if the driving experience is on par I’m in.

D.E. Sarcarean pursuing. And I don't think so. Not entirely. All automakers do have engineers who like and enjoy working on EVs. It's the upper management who just don't get it.

The idea of future proofing classic cars is a good one. And you could introduce modern safety equipment into them as well. I was a bit sceptical at first but I’ve warmed to the idea a lot since it was first shown.
Not future proofing though is it, electric will never give you the fuzz of the sound of a good engine. Future proofing would be modifying it to running on alcohol to keep the spirit of the car. Making old working classics into electrics bothers me greatly
'Grown' Alcohol is still a poluter and cant be manufactured using Wind, Solar & Hydro (yet), but a combustion engine burning Hydrogen is a different story. The combustion of hyrogen actually cleans air as it's flame speed aand heat breaks down long chain carbon molecules in poluted air. It would sound cool as well :)
Safety equipment could be a mixed bag. ESP, ABS, traction control are all possible, but you still have the limitations of the original chassis when it comes to crash safety equipment. Side impact bars yeah, curtain airbags no.
I think the futureproofing aspect is unwise. Nobody is choosing an E-Type for practical reasons, rather they enjoy the behaviour, the quirks and limitations, which together give it it's feel in person. Getting the masses away from Petrol is good, but I don't see an advantage from an environmental or financial perspective with what's basically an uncommon toy.
Sorry, if you burn it with air you still get the nitrogen oxides.

I'm a Petrolhead since 1956 when at the age of 6 I built my first model car and Dad bought a service station. I've done just about every genre of racing in cars, motorcycles and snowmobiles and I can't even begin to tell you how many engines I've built or rebuilt over the years and motor oil flows through my veins. I've also always considered the E-Type to be about the second most beautiful car ever made, just behind the Ferrari 250 GTO. I appreciate electric vehicles although have only had one, a Vectrix Motorcycle. That being said I think this is an awesome concept especially in light of Jaguar's classic restorations and that it is fully reversible. With a 170 mile range it is not only beautiful but also practical. Sign me up! Oops, in my excitement I almost forgot that now that I'm retired I probably couldn't afford the wheels let alone a whole car.

Joseph Stott no need for pricey RED cameras really. Not as easy to mount to car dashboards as an A6500. You can't easily carry 3 REDS with lenses, batteries, filters, tripods, mounts & pocket slider on your back on the tube either. I can if I use the small sonys. Smaller cameras mean thinner lighter tripods and sliders. The final image is good enough for what we need it for too.

EV West conversion on VW Karmann Ghia. Personally prefer the Karmann more, but the E-Type is the child of the same Era of exquisite design.

Love the video it took to me back to my trucking days 55 years ago. When driving on the M4 I pulled into the seven Bridge service station on my way from South Wales to Felixstowe. There in the car park was an E tipe jag with the most incredible paint job The E stood for Egyptian it was gold and painted on the bonnet was Tutankhamen with chariot's painted on both side. The car was on its way to London to be auctioned, because the owner could not afford to pay for the paint job. It was the most incredible paint job that I've ever seen. 60s brakes would scare the proverbial outta me.
The Jaguar D-Type and E-Type were notable as the first implementations of disc brakes in cars.
With regen the original brakes would be overkill.

owned and driven them. The Jag has shit brakes . Ever tried to repair rear calipers? Ever really driven one hard? Ever felt that sickening feeling heading nto a bend when the rear brakes fade to nothing? these are 1950's dunlop/girling design and are useless . Add to this,the weight of the lithium bomb pack and you are in deep shit when driving fast.

I had a XKE in 1974-75. I had a great time with it. But now seeing that you can make it a E-car, I would of done this in a heart beat if I still had the Jag. Boy do I miss it. Great job on it.

When electric cars become lighter and have more performance than cars from 50 years ago you know we're not far from the end of petrol motors.
What's the point of carbon fiber on the dash tho. Just keep the interior classic. Would've been way better.
One point is the XJS never had that engine, however for my choice I would have an XJ6 Coupe.

Just found this video. I had a 1962 E type back in the 70's and wish I still had it. I took a picture of it with mountain scenery in the background that is now my computer wallpaper so I at least get to see it every day.

I would love to buy one, but with the old dashbord i think.
The convertible etype didn't have the beautiful lines of the coupe, IMHO, and so I always preferred the coupe for that reason. The convertible looks swollen or something, whereas the coupe had real style. I agree with you about the dashboard, the old one would've been preferable, and the shift knob could easily have been electrified internally, rather than the generic knob, which looks cheesy. I like electric cars as the future, but driving a classic like this, with no exhaust note, would be "frustrating".
I like the dashboard, but would expect to see it in the BMW i8. I think they could have kept it looking a lot more original and yet still have modern tech behind it.

Paresh Panchal I think the E-type came after the D-type, which wasn't a diesel... the old C-type did however run on charcoal.

Every comment section needs a dissenting opinion, and I’m going to be it. I’m the purest they talked about in the video. I currently own a Prius and my next car will be a full EV. I also own a 1970 E-Type. I’ve had the car since 1980 and have spent many hour restoring it. Although I want an EV I would never electrify my E-Type. The one excellent idea with this project is the reversibility of the change. As far as future proofing it for when petrol is hard to get. By the time we get to a point where it’s hard to find petrol or it’s very expensive E-Types will probably no long be allow on the road for a host of other safety reasons. Secondly, the cars will be so expensive that no matter how much petrol cost if you can afford the car you can afford the petrol.
As far as the posers that just want to drive the E-Type for its looks but don’t want to be bothered with the maintenance on the engine then they also are probably not going to want to deal with the maintenance on the brakes, steering, suspension, and rear gearbox. People that just want the look should get a modern built replica and not mash-up an original.
As far as the amount of pollution I generate burning some type of fuel. Let’s keep things in perspective here. In 14 years of production there were 74,000 E-Types made. Even if all of them still existed (which they don’t) no matter how bad the pollution is from them is would be so small in the grand climate change debate that it would not be measurable. Climate scientists talk about changing our CO2 output by Gigatons. Climate change is no reason to justify electrifying E-types.
Kip, this is a very valid argument. I see what you mean completely. I suppose what Jag is doing is offering a product that might suit some people. Some. people who aren't interested in pure originality, or who live in inner cities and want to continue using old cars without tail pipe emissions or fines. I appreciate both arguments actually.

I fully backed your opinion Kip, until I found the modification was reversible.
While I would rather own a replica so I could relax a little about crashing I think making it reversible is enough of a compromise for me.
One problem I have with claiming you like the original design is it sounds like the car;s power system is poorly made by modern ICE standards even. It seem to need too much maintenance because how the engine/drive-train is designed. Tell me would you object if the same car had a more modern IC engine from Jag? I really am asking to get an idea of how you think.
It is what it is. To quote Billy Joel, “Don’t go changing your hair to some new fashion, I love you just the way you are.” You are correct that modern ICEs require much less maint. On the plus side I don't need a computer to work on it. It's all basic mechanical and electrical systems. I’ve replaces several of the wiring harnesses, try doing that on a modern car. The legend of the E-Type was never just about the body design, it was about the entire car. It was about an engine that could propel it to 150 mph. A first for a mass production car. It was about the spoke wheels. It was about the beautiful interior of wood and leather. It was about the sound the engine makes. One of the things that people always ask me when I’m out driving my E-Type is to see the engine. It’s also nice to see where we were with ICEs in the early 60s and it makes you appreciate just how good the modern engines have gotten. I know that many E-types have had more modern engines installed. In general those cars are not worth as much as ones that have been kept original. I intend to keep mine as original as possible. Historical items have no value as historical items if they have been rebuilt with modern parts and methods.
I long for the day where you can get a battery + electric motor kit compact enough and with comparable performance of a regular, gas powered car, and just dump it in any classic car that you want...
This one is quicker than the original to 60mph, and just as fast as the original. And can be dropped into any Jaguar with the XK straight-six engine.
Rafael Rossetti Almeida no kit but many shops will do a conversion using off the shelf components,performance better than the gas original is easy to achieve, handling is usually the issue as the changes mean a heavy battery pack

@GameOn You'll never get kits that can be just dumped into any classic car, any more than you can get a new ICE that can be just dumpe3de into any classic car. The restriction is not from the powerplant - it's from the different geometries of the old transmission, and the old engine mounts, and the space available within the body.
Getting this transplant to easily replace *any* Jaguar straight-six is a major achievement, imo.

Why on earth did they put an old Type 1 socket on the thing - especially without a DC fast charge option!? Odd choice considering it has a pretty sizeable battery (40kWh)

Um... how does that answer the question? Also, one reason people don't drive classic cars much is because the more you drive them, the sooner the engine is going to need an overhaul. Not the case here, so I suspect this WILL see a lot of driving. I'd drive it everyday if I new I didn't have to service an ICE.
I don't know enough about engineering to give a meaningful answer so I can only assume it would require more significant changes to the original car. Either that or because it's a prototype and thus will never be used as a daily driver - and this specific one probably never even sold.
It wouldn't require significant changes at all... they'd be trivial. It's just as likely this does in fact have a planned owner, and they live in the USA... where they only have the inferior Type 1 plugs for non-Tesla EVs.

Congrats to Jaguar Land Rover for future proofing not just the beautiful E-type, but also a huge range of other Jaguars and proving to other manufacturers it is possible to future proof the classics.

If the future of motoring is electric then so be it, but festooning a timeless classic of elegance, beauty and style with an electric motor is sacrilege. Leave classics alone for people to polish and love and start focusing on making electric cars that people actually want to buy because with electric cars making up for less than 3% of uk sales, some serious work needs to be done.

Did Top Gear start a new run? Yeah, I know it used to be a bit like "Red Dwarf Does A Car Show" with Clarkson + May + Hammond, and whilst a bit stupid at least it was very entertaining.

i could almost cry every time i ever see one of these. they are rare here in canada. i have loved it since day 1, but it was way over my "champagne taste/cheap mexican beer budget" cashflow to ever be able to afford one. if i ever win the lottery, purchase #1 is a converted e-type. gorgeous automotive architecture, with modern electric components. just heaven on wheels.

Sorry but this is like buying a grade 1 listed building and fitting double glazing and solar panels to thatched roof.
They are an epic car but why didn't they make the track or wheels a bit wider.
Regarding your house analogy....
To me it is like doing away with the original oil lamps and candles, and installing a lighting circuit and a couple of electrical ring mains in your thatched cottage. Once possibly controversial.... now, the absolute norm.
Matt H Jay Leno has the right approach .... Get a rusty shell, with no running gear, then replace missing panels with fibreglass ones, and fit an electric drive train in that scenario. Concours cars should be left that way.
That would be a bit of a 'Triggers broom' though. What we have here is a major world class car manufacturer doing something truly remarkable... taking their past, and using it as a test bed to develop their future. Messing about with a rusty shell probably was not really their focus. The concept of taking an old oil burner engine and producing a one piece drop-in electric powerplant is excellent. I am glad I watched it (although I admit I watched it because of the EV aspect rather than the 'coooooor, just look at that booootiful old jag' aspect).
This is more like buying a house with architectural merit on a 15 year leasehold, and being handed the option to buy out the leasehold.
This is like buying a historic Frank Lloyd Wright home and furnishing it with WalMart furniture.

Bullshit. Standard E-Type never had particularly entertaining engine sound. Heck if Rimac was commissioned to they could probably 2x the Torque of the old engine. That time isn’t now, I’m very sceptical of how electric cars can roll out Nationally in the Volumes That a Vehicle is Owned and used today.
Will I have to Run a wire out of the window to charge My Car? What if some fucker decided it’s fun to Unplug it over night , and it’s not charged by the morning ?
Will there be enough charge points for all to use ? Say you live in a Multi tenanted block of around 200 people and If a quarter owned an EV car will 50 people be able to charge 50 cars from a small area ? Will I be able to drive 400 miles to Edinburgh on one charge ? Without spending 8 hours plugged into a Service station charge point ?
Will there be enough electricity available on the grid to charge a Nations electric cars all at once over night ?
I think poo powered cars and used chip oil in diesels would be better .

I just couldn’t imagine a merc AMG Electric instead of them 6.3 engines and quad exhausts making the most dirtiest noise you can ever hear from a car. It’s just Not right .

The sound of an electric car is yet to be born, meaning the types of sounds that an EV could make, will be endless. I love this E-Type idea, especially if you take the idea of including sound, I would choose a Merlin engine sound, or if I so choose at the touch of a screen, the Millenium Falcon bursts into life. So even if on lookers were not watching they soon would be.
