  • After a week of slacking, we're back with another thrilling episode of Bluffers to Buffers. In this instalment we are taking a look at the A4's that reside on our fictional OO Gauge model railway layout Redknob-End Junction.
We've dug out our Dapol Black Label Mallard, Our Hornby 1:1 Collection Bittern and Sir Murrough Winston which has a YouChoos DCC sound install, weathering by TMC, real coal and a cab crew fitted.

I'd guess the noise was probably the water pump filling the boiler up before setting off.

Love the banter in this video, a new one on me.
I've got a Dapol Black Label blue Mallard as well. Mine's superb and out performs my mate's Hornby A4 with TTS sound on every level. I've done a video of mine running to, but the smoke output was hopeless. I've since discovered that it was because I had filled it up with Dapol's low odor oil. Stick with the full fat stuff.
Also, are you aware the smoke is synchronised with the sound chuffs and smoke comes out of the whistle when its sounded ?
The sound of the chime whistle is truly exceptional compared to other sound recordings.

Hi Andrew 🤘 sadly our Black Label has since completely given up the ghost. No sound, smoke or movement. Dapol themselves weren’t interested in fixing it. Directed us to a third party, who wanted £60 just to look at it. So it’s currently with our local model shop who may or may not be able to save it. Shame, as it was a lovely model 😔

@@BlufferstoBuffers I'm guessing the 3rd party is their pet repairer DCC Supplies ?
It's too expensive a loco to just leave idle. They cost £400 new !
My Works bought me mine as part of a £1k 40-years service award. The remaining £600 was on a very special Japanese bass spinning rod and reel.

Yes, quite agree on the cost side of things. It made our wallet itch when we bought it (though with the price of things these days, it doesn’t seem that bad 😱) but just felt the attitude of Dapol and of DCC supplies (or whoever it was) was unbecoming of us giving them more of our pennies. Roxley Models are great and have fixed a couple of our locos, so we are confident of a solution 🤞 and, quite frankly, we’d rather give them our money.

Isn't that a brake pump on UOsA?

The guy on the train said something similar. Just never heard one like that before 🤔

The metal A4 would look beautiful if it was done up in factory fresh condition

The metal Dapol version is done up in factory fresh condition. It's the shiny one.

Hello Bluffers to Buffers, great video I was wondering if you could help me out with a question, I have recently bought a "Hornby R2206 LMS 4-6-2 CORONATION CLASS 6220 'CORONATION'" in good used condition at a Hornby show for £50 is this good/bad/okay? I am new to the hobby and am only just starting to buy (Asking you as you're experienced), please reply to me to tell me if I made a good choice? Thanks ! Tom

Thanks 🙏🏽 if it works well, and you wanted it then £50 is a bargain. As we always say, you can’t put a price on happiness (or model train collections).

The chuffing sound from 60009 at a standstill in the video is the air brake pump running to keep the air brake system pressured up. All mainline locos require air braking systems when in use on the mainline to comply with modern day standards.

It's the injector a4s have a more mechanical injector similar to that of a bullied

    • @BlufferstoBuffers

It was going constantly all the time the loco was static 🤔

@@BlufferstoBuffers alot of the time they put the injectors on to stop the safety valves going off and wasting steam
