- Rare color footage of the tallest man in medical history, Robert Wadlow (1918-1940), who stood 8 feet 11 inches and weighed 491 pounds. This home movie footage appears to have been taken during one of Wadlow's personal appearances in the late 1930s.

I grew up in Alton, Illinois and my mother went to school with Robert Wadlow. He was never treated as anyone different in his hometown and was well-respected.

That is really awesome how the people of Alton could look past his abnormality, and treat him as one of their own.
He wore a size 40 shoe, I saw one displayed in a St Louis library back in the 60's. It was custom made, of course, by Brown shoe Co., it was massive, and weighed quite a bit, I can't remember exactly how much. And it's said that he could completely hide one of those 7 oz coke bottles in his hand. He's a legend around that part of the country, as Alton is right across the Mississippi from St Louis.
Crazy thing is that his condition isn't what caused his death. He wore braces and caught an infection due to a blister in his leg. That ultimately killed him.

Well he wore the leg braces because of his condition so it still kind of killed him, albeit indirectly.
He was apparently the sweetest guy you'd ever want to meet. A real gentle giant. Never bemoaned his fate or got angry at people gawking at him. It's no surprise that thousands of people attended his funeral.
He seemed like a genuinely nice guy!
There's a 1975 documentary of his life here on TH-cam. Robert is shown interacting with kids. It's incredible. Just your typical honorable young man of the town, just 1/3 bigger. One of his teachers said writing was difficult for him in school because of how small the pencil was compared to his hand. He wrote all his papers though, she said, so apparently he still succeeded.

Whenever I see that 9’0” clearance sign at the drive thru, It reminds me how tall Robert Wadlow was. He would’ve been taller if he lived longer because I remember they said he was still growing every time they measured him. Would’ve been over 9’0” for sure.
He lived a short life riddled with intense physical pain towards the very end. He was a kind and intelligent man with a good upbringing.

I remember seeing him in The Guinness Book of World Records when I was a kid and it amazed me. Now seeing this and other videos about his short life puts it in perspective. Sadly, he was only 22 when he died. His shoe size was 37AA and his coffin was 10 ft 9 in long.

Yeah that Chinese basketball player who is 7ft 9 has the same condition and basically won't stop growing and the tallest American man who is 7ft 8 will never stop growing the doctor's can only slow it down, but in Roberts day they did not have advancements to slow the growth plus Roberts parent's refused treatments but Robert would have kept growing way past 9ft had he not died.
He was. He was 22, when he passed. He would've went over 9'0" and possibly to 10 ' and beyond. But that's just speculation. He died of a foot infection and not necessarily from Giantism. He was over 400 lbs.

My great grandmother has a photo with him when she was 12, she said looking straight up to him it looked he was bending over top of her like skyscrapers can give that illusion and that his voice was very very deep.

The tallest man I have ever seen in person is 7'8". Robert Wadlow was 15 inches taller.

Wadlow wouldn't really need athletic talent as he could just stand there and drop the ball in whenever he wanted; and for defense he could just stand in front of the basket and completely cover it by holding his arms up.
