Burma Mines Railway 2013 Part 1 of 4

  • Namtu, in the far north east of Myanmar in Shane State, is the headquarters of Burma Mines Railways. This 2' gauge line used to run from Namyao via Namtu to Bawdwin. Silver and lead ore was carried to the smelter at Namtu. Two steam locomotives remain in working order but are not in regular use. One is a Bagnall 2-6-2 No.42 built 1928, the other, a Kerr Stewart 0-4-2T No.13 built 1914. The railway also has a rail vehicle converted from a Japanese Hino lorry. The line has some steep gradients and a spectacular 540 degree spiral curve just before Wallah Gorge.
    Ore used to be taken by a NG electric railway from Bawdwin mines to the wooden ore loading point at Tiger Camp via a tunnel. Currently this line is not operational.

    Speaks tomes of British engineering skill and quality of their locomotives of a hundred years ago and Burmese ingenuity at keeping them serving . That's the way to go!

    Excellent video thank you for posting it. Boy what a glimpse into the past. The train and infrastructure are fascinating to look at. All the ancient machinery and and stuff lying all around. I especially liked the way the guy used the sledge hammer to switch the tracks with the broken switch stand laying in the dust behind him. Also intriguing are the still images of the inclined plane with the winches and the double turntable area for shunting the mine cars in different directions. I'd love to model something like this and with your high-res video getting details is not a problem. Keep up the great work.

    Clearly the line and the stock operating on it is past 'shelf life'.
    The break in the rail was complete brittle, a sign of years of metal fatigue developing, these rails must never have been renewed since opening of this line.
    It seems some parts of the railway have been closed for years and now been used solely for the benefits of your group visiting this line, as that point was completely burried in sand and rubble.
    But all this makes up the charme of this line and the stock operating on it, and I very happy with the fact you got there and recorded it before it completely disappears.
    I recently started modelling 2' gauge in 7mm scale and this is another fine example of the unique atmosphere these lines have to offer, sadly the real working 2' railways are in threat of extinction and only the preserved ones will survive.

      Watching these 4 videos, I agree that this scenario could form a large layout. I do "O" gauge. If only I had the room, I'd reproduce this countryside. All the detail we need is in these videos. I'd have no trouble reproducing the terrible track-work as this is what my own track-laying is like anyway.

    I rembemered in Mumbai small steam bg engines were used till 1981/82 at Vadala goods yard which is located behind port trust colony. You may have some information about it.

    So enjoyable, fascinating and great filming. Very creative and you did a great job of catching the little loco under load up hill. Great scenery and sometimes the sounds are a.s.m.r. ish. Perfect.!

    Better weather than in part 2 (which was offered me first). Great little railway and just right for preserving - but you need a few thousand members and volunteers!

    Fantastic video, weird seeing the bit where the pass the kids walking up the road, seems like they have seen it many times before, none of them take any notice !

      It is not rust. It is mud round the smokebox door to make an ai-rtight seal. Quite a common practice on small industrial steam locos.

    Superb video as usual. I love all the little eccentricities about the whole line, - (especially the 'new' method of point changing). Really looking forward to the rest of the parts. It would make an excellent 'tourist' surely, and with labour in plentiful supply in that Country do you know if there are plans along those lines. (Excuse the 'pun').

      I agree but a tourist line is very unlikely, at least for the time being. The railway is a ten hour bus ride north east of Mandalay over at times poor roads. The journey also includes competing with heavy lorries over a mountain pass. The mine is in a restricted area not normally open to foreigners.

      Thanks for your reply. I wasn't aware of the problems attached to it being a 'tourist line' - such a shame as it seems so unique, hidden away as it obviously is. I always think it is a shame they did not preserve any of the 'sugar cane' lines in Java - some of their loco's were real 'rare gems'. In the end I suppose it all comes down to 'profitability', and if you are in business for the most you can get out of it with the least outlay, and lets face it most businessmen are. Then all the while it works leave it alone and simply scrap it when it finally gives up and don't care about the workers either.

      The clay is used to make an airtight seal round the smokebox door. Without it, the loco would not steam well.

      Please read my introduction and look at the caption at 1.18. The steam loco is a Kerr Stewart 0-4-2 tank. The loco appearing on screen at 1.58 is an Orenstein & Koppel (O&K) 0-6-0 diesel hydraulic, so the caption is correct.
