Came straight into the comments knowing I'd meet fellow drummers. I recognized him right before Donna came out, that distinct rim shot technique and style. So Awesome!
Midnight Special and Soul Train were must watch for me as a young man....Wanted to see Donna and hear on any program she appeared...Had all her music. Records and 8 Tracks.
Donna had such a great stage presence! She became the character of the song. All her performances were like watching live theater. She learned her craft well by performing in Hair, Godspell, Porgy and Bess overseas. Truly the greatest female singer of our time. She let her unbelievable voice come through near the end!
This re-arrangement is startlingly transformative in every positive way imaginable. It's treated more as a funk track, with jazzy solos, than straight-up Disco and DonSum's vocals are absolutely stunning in her transitioning from the sing-songy simplicity of the opening verses and choruses to that immense talkover bridge and then she starts belting out and, wow, this is a blazing hot performance on every level. I'm truly overwhelmed, as a lifelong fan, I can only imagine how stunningly exciting this performance had to be at that time, witnessing such an incredible, iconic talent coming into the pop culture. Love to love, love to love this!
The Midnight Special, really showed damn good taste by putting on Donna Summer. She is freaking awesome. Her voice is unique and original. She is a legendary musician and artist.
@@robertgordon668 I first saw her in concert in the Philippines in 1977. She brought the house down from start to finish. Her concerts were all packed, and DJs were telling everyone to check her out. Her renditions of Come With Me and Try Me were all-out and were unlike their recorded versions. She belted out a la Minnie Riperton in one part of her hit song (in the Philippines, at least) Whispering Waves, to thunderous applause. It is hard for me as a 15-year old then to forget the privilege of listening and watching this powerful force!
This was really pushing the edge on network TV for that time.
The show came on at midnight so it might have been why it was so erotic.
Fantastic backup band for Donna, featuring Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums!! ☺
I thought so!
I was wondering who that was. Damn he was on fire.
Is that who that is? Wow I reckon he's fixin' to go into the studio to play on Steely Dan's AJA album soon. What a master.

This song was banned in the Philippines on radios during its height of popularity, but eventually was a hit in disco houses. I love Donna Summer.
