    E39 update that I know some of you would appreciate. In the video I mention it's been 3 years since I have owned this car but after reviewing some uploads this would actually be the 4th year of ownership.

      I will tell you if you put in the money to catch the car entirely up on maintenance they’ll last a long time. The problem with these cars is the maintenance gets passed around because people would rather sell than fix the problems.

    So I've been looking at getting one of these and for the past few months I've been gathering info on the issues. Now people have been saying they have spent quite a lot of money on these things which are understandable since pretty sure the first owners drove these like they stole it but looking up the parts corresponding to the issues online, they don't seem too crazy expensive to me (I'm not rich, I wouldn't be looking at a used beamer if I was). Is it the labor that really kicks you in the nuts?

    • @TheMysticSpade
      @TheMysticSpade  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mine ultimately had every problem you could think of eventually happen. Over my total 7 years ownership I maybe spent 8k for maintenance. But I also bought it from someone that didn't maintain it. Yes it's definitely the labor for them, parts are reasonably priced. To give you an idea all the parts for my timing job was around 2k and labor was 4k.

    • @TheMysticSpade
      @TheMysticSpade  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Auto or Manual has no effect on engine maintenance. If you’re buying a 540 make sure it has verifiable records especially regarding the timing guides. Otherwise keep that 5k in your back pocket to have the job done when they blow, because they will.

  • @gabrielfernandez4065

    Sooooo I shouldnt buy an E39 540i as a student?

    • @TheMysticSpade
      @TheMysticSpade  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's hard to say. If you get one that the maintenance has been kept up WITH proof you should be fine, but expect to pay significantly more. Otherwise and what usually happens all the maintenance is getting passed to the next owner. It's best to spend a few hundred and have a proper PPI (pre purchase inspection) done before you commit. That way you know exactly what you're getting into. I LOVE my 540, but I did get stuck with the work although I did get 2 years out of it before I had to do any actual work besides oil changes.

    • @TheMysticSpade
      @TheMysticSpade  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you buy one that the maintenance was kept up with verifiable records it’s a very reliable car. If you’re buying one without verifiable maintenance it’s a crap shoot. Timing guides, vanos and cooling system are the top mechanical failures of this car and can cost upwards of 7-8k to repair everything at a quality shop. If you’re going to do all the work yourself parts are around 2-3k for everything. I love my 540i but I definitely got stuck having to pay out for the maintenance.

    • @gary_beniford
      @gary_beniford ปีที่แล้ว

      the 335 can be very expensive to maintain also. the turbo engines wear out fast and the turbos are plastic. when they break they're just as expensive. they are a newer generation so they have even more computers emissions than the e39 which was primarily designed in the 90s

      Mine does not sadly. On the walkaround at the very beginning if you pause it when I'm at the trunk you'll see. I have a full carbon trunk and didn't want to drill a hole in it and like the clean look to it..... but that definitely was a kick in the nuts when I closed it without a battery in the car.

      realistically I would say no but only to a 540i. You'd have much better reliability with a 525 or 530. The inline 6 engine is not near as much of a maintenance queen as the M62tu v8. But if you find one that has had all main issues taken care of cooling wise and Timing Guides (WITH PROOF) then snatch it up. With any bmw purchase I highly recommend have a mechanic look it over before buying, BMW owners tend to pass the maintenance issues onto the next owners all to often.
