Since i've been 13 i have imagined my miniature came to life with every warhammer battle and now i can see them moving for real. They carry the corpse of the horse and famous grail knights they served, and when they do this, they actually have magical property on the battlefield. Its pretty spiffy.
They are basically peasant fanboys (battle pilgrims) of a grail knight. Then that grail knight and his horse died so they picked him up and started carrying him to be his horse. If you think just these battle pilgrims are weird, check out the normal battle pilgrims at around 1:29 . They hold their shields upside down. Peasants are so difficult to train which is why normal men-at-arms have symmetrical shields so that they never hold them the wrong way around... no such luck for battle pilgrims because they scavenge their gear.
Bretonnia as a faction is a weird mix of both dark and light themes. On the one hand, peasants are brutally oppressed by the nobility. On the other hand, every noble is a knight, and not fighting and protecting the people is considered the greatest of crimes. In addition, the King and many nobles are grail knights, meaning that they are inherently good and incorruptible. Then again, 90% tax rate and little to no upward mobility. It's one of the reasons I like Bretonnia.
Well, it's not that they are, it's that they CAN be (and in a bunch of cases are xD) But to be fair, they are but filthy peasants, so no harm done. : )

Frankly I'd be disappointed if they made a tv show about it and there WASN'T a mustache twirling hoity toity french guy laughing at Sad peasents. But at the end of the day Bretonnia is the land of Chivalry and Honor. The reason it is called "FAIR Bretonnia" is because the knights literally devote their entire lives to driving out darkness from the lands in service to the Goddess of purity and honor. One of my favorite little quotes is "What is a Knight without his Steed? And indeed what is a steed without his knight? Knight and steed, on such noble foundations was bretonnia built!" What was it like one in 8 knights take the virtue of empathy? : ) I'll be honest, I didn't even know Warhammer existed until total war. And even then I was pissed because I like history WAY more than fantasy. But once I started getting used to it I bought the DLCs and I have to say Bretonnia was immediately my favorite. I started reading the lore and I loved it. Gotta admit I'm not a tabletop kind of guy but some of the stories in that too just blew me away. XD in the total war comments I asked who everyone thought would win in a wat between bretonnia and Empire and everyone was all "Empire Empire Empire Empire cuz guns and cannons" 😅 I dunno though. From my understanding the Bretonnian navy has way more guns and cannons than the Empire. And grail blessings do seem OP at least in lore. But then again I dont know as much as most about it. As for end times... 😅 gotta be honest I was dissapointed. Like if louens son just turned evil id be okay but something about the lady actually being Ariel or Lilieth (I think were the names) is off to me. I'm alright with her being a known god of the elves, heck i could even handle her being an elf herself, but something about her NOT being the lady is just wrong. Like yea they get to be guards of the elves but imagine being a crusader fighting for God and next thing you know budda is taking you to nirvana. 😅 just wasn't the same for me

Lordaeron could barely survive an Undead plague and Stormwind got shited on by the Orcs......the Empire fought back the Greenskins, killed Nagash the Necromancer, defeated Three Vampire Invasion, survived the Black Plague and fought back the Skaven Under-Empire and defeated a Chaotic invasion......all by themselves..... Not only was the reciting of the Vows of the Knights of Bretonnia nostalgic in a strange but cool way...but the voice actor did an excellent job and that swell as well as the visual at the end were very powerfully moving. At long last, Bretonnia shall rise...honor is all, CHIVALRY IS ALL!
Is the Faye entranches and the lady the same person? The knight in this video was at a lake and then the Faye enchrantas appeared, so I am a little confused. I remember in the book, the fall of altdorf, mannfred and arkhan had Faye imprisoned. Meanwhile, the lady backed stabbed lounen Leon course by allowing the green knight to become king again. Then she sent louen and a handful of his knights on a suicide mission to fight nurgle in altdorf. So I thought the lady and Faye were two different people because Faye was imprisoned when the lady humiliated and killed louen leocourre

They can afford to do this a a free because so many of the units are already done, the 2 you mentioned would take a lot more work and most likely very different mechanics. Also while Skaven are everywhere :) lizardmen are not really in the scope of this game (unless my memory fails me).
I think he means in terms of "High" fantasy rather than the medium to low levels elsewhere in the realms of man. I always got less of a grim or dark feeling from bretonia than other areas (unless you are a peasant of course in which case .... ) .
Bretonnia has one fantastic example of why I prefer Fantasy over 40k, and that is the fact that you can genuinely point to not just an individual, but whole groups of people who are genuinely noble, heroic, and even good. In this case, it is the Grail Knights, who have to genuinely fit the Paladin stereotype, or they couldn't become one in the first place.

I really love Bretonnia, honestly the Knights are just so classically cool. Bizarrely GW's attempts to make them an asshole faction by constantly emphasizing how downtrodden the peasants are just sort of backfired for me. They went so over the top with the description of their miserable state that they ended up painting a picture of an impossible society that would collapse within a few years if it ran as described. A system where everyone is starving to death all the time could never produce, well... anything, but much less longbowmen. The 9/10th tax rate is statistically impossible to survive on, and if most of people are inbred and nothing is being done to counteract this then all the peasants would be sterile in a few generations... but this has been this state of affairs for hundreds of years... uh huh. Basically, the lore on peasants became so absurd that I just ignore it now, envision a realistic feudal society backing the Knights of Bretonnia, and carry on.
i think i know how it happened that it went so far: GW Based Bretonnia on Arthurian Legends (lady of the lake, Green Knight etc.), Medieval England (longbowmen etc.) and Medieval France (knight stuff etc.)... so they more or less wanted to use it to cater to the english/british and French players with BRetonnia... and since GW themselves are english i guess there was a nice bit of national pride in it and therefore they transformed them into the "super good guys" yet other nations with overall darker themes ended up being more popular (i think i've read that the Emperor originaly was a drunkard etc.). Stuff got revamped... Bretonnia might've ended up not as popular and good selling as expected.. and GW than went: "Ok what's missing is grimdarkness... throw a wagon load on it"... and completely overdid it...
mhm... saw that also in the (later) Gotrek and Felix Books and the Thanquol books... i see myself ever more often to bet, after more or less all Characters have been introduced, which of the newly introduced characters that are the "good guys" (for example most of the Castle Reiksguard Garrison in Zombieslayer) will survive... i normaly say: none... and i'm mostly right... it makes the books a tad boring if you know that the characters they cant kill of survive and the rest dies...
undertakernumberone1 What irritated me the most about Gotrek and Felix was that they couldn't seem to decide if they wanted Felix to be a badass or not. He starts out weak but not pathetic in Trollslayer, then steadily gets better and better until he's a bonafide hero in his own right in Deamonslayer and Beast Slayer, who can reliably kill Chaos Warriors 1v1 and ain't afraid of no bloodthirster. The dwarfs even tell him that he's an amazing fighter, with one Dwarf in Deamonslayer saying that he didn't know humans could become as strong as him. Very high words of praise from one of the elder races. Then for no reason he starts backsliding towards mediocrity somewhere around Orcslayer. In Manslayer he is downright pathetic, struggling against common street thugs while Ulrika takes massive steaming crap after massive steaming crap all over him and his skills. Bear in mind at this point in the story this is a 45 year old man in the body of a 20 year old with more combat experience than most Dwarvish Greatbeards. He should be one of the best fighters in the Empire at this point, and hes helped kill a very powerful Vampire Lord, something Ulrika knows about, and yet she still talks to him like hes some kind weak scrub. It doesn't make any sense. Clearly it was done because they wanted Gotrek to be the designated badass, but really you can do both. and all it really did was throw his character development out the window 😬. It is a pity that they never went to Bretonnia.

Ah I remember when Bretonnia was released and I found that model in particular really interesting. Welp best to remember the good and not the bad GW has done eh?
Everything else aside, the more I watch this trailer the more I like it, the music combined with his speech. just really captures this heroic, honor bound knights feeling. I was not really that interested in Bretonnia before, (more of a vampire counts player) but right now this trailer really got me hyped up about playing the chivalrous knights of Bretonnia!
The trailer of TWW 3 is out, and it looks awesome ofc, with Kislev and the Chaos and so on... but I was instantly brought back here. This is so well done. A simple fellow human, armed with vows and fighting bravely evil foes way more powerful than him. And yet he CHARGES! Sums up 6th edition Bretonnia so well, at least the matches I played. I also kept the same vibe while playing the campaign in TWW. Hordes of knights charging. Never fleeing from battles even at the cost of certain death, because HONOR! The most memorable campaign I played in the series. I will never forget freeing the Empire, turned into a Chaos wasteland, and meeting the demons for a final epic charge.
The bretonian code of a knight is very tough. Sure, most of the population are peasents and they are forced to serve and feed their lord (and his horse) and pay for his weapons and armor. On the other hand a bretonian knight is bound by code and honor to protect the peasents living on his land, even if this means to face an entire horde alone. Refusal to honor the code results in the loss of title, land and under certain circumstances even life. The empire has an army of thugs and mercenaries, the kingdom of Bretonia fights with knights and peasents. Can't wait to conquer all the realms of man with my crusader army :-D
I'd rather serve beside "thugs and mercenaries" then some entitled douche-bag that can't feed his own horse. Plus the Empire has guns and artillery. When the world throws 600lb orks at you, your gonna want guns and artillery.

What? That's wrong. She became the patron Goddess of Bretonnia in order to bring about a new breed of demi-gods, the Grail Knights, believing the greatest and most noble of human knights to be greater guardian spirits for her new realm than the Elves. Bretonnia was not a shield or cannon fodder for the elves, they were the foundation of a new realm made up of the spirits of the grail knights and damsels, protected against the evils of chaos.

Disparaging feudalism is one thing, and certainly valid, but they wrote their feudalism based on Arthurian legend, all of which is a story about the desire for moral purity. Oops. How do you un-write that? Well, let's just make the noble lords and ladies dedicated to chivalry also abuse peasants, to ridiculous extremes, so it fits with modern narratives of class oppression. This may be a bit late and I hate to break it to you but bretonia would never stand a chance against the empire like never, and it's not because the bretonians don't have strong courageous leaders or strong relics or stuff like that, it's because of how their kingdom and mindset work, they are centuries behind the empire in everything but horseriding
As a former Bret player, I'm impressed they have all the knights (Errant, Realm, Questing and Grail) and they even worked in the Grail Reliquae.
How can you tell the difference? Is it the heraldry they wear?

Not only was the reciting of the Vows of the Knights of Bretonnia nostalgic in a strange but cool way...but the voice actor did an excellent job and that swell as well as the visual at the end were very powerfully moving. At long last, Bretonnia shall rise...honor is all, CHIVALRY IS ALL!
Is the Faye entranches and the lady the same person?
The knight in this video was at a lake and then the Faye enchrantas appeared, so I am a little confused.
I remember in the book, the fall of altdorf, mannfred and arkhan had Faye imprisoned.
Meanwhile, the lady backed stabbed lounen Leon course by allowing the green knight to become king again.
Then she sent louen and a handful of his knights on a suicide mission to fight nurgle in altdorf.
So I thought the lady and Faye were two different people because Faye was imprisoned when the lady humiliated and killed louen leocourre

At first I was disappointed that this wasn't one of the more fantastical races like the Skaven or the lizard men but you've convinced me.
They can afford to do this a a free because so many of the units are already done, the 2 you mentioned would take a lot more work and most likely very different mechanics. Also while Skaven are everywhere :) lizardmen are not really in the scope of this game (unless my memory fails me).
Robert Pettigrew technically in the southern lands, like super far south they are, but yeah not really going there so not in this game!
Bretonnia is probably THE most fantastical of the kingdoms of men, all things considered.

I think he means in terms of "High" fantasy rather than the medium to low levels elsewhere in the realms of man. I always got less of a grim or dark feeling from bretonia than other areas (unless you are a peasant of course in which case .... ) .
Bretonnia has one fantastic example of why I prefer Fantasy over 40k, and that is the fact that you can genuinely point to not just an individual, but whole groups of people who are genuinely noble, heroic, and even good. In this case, it is the Grail Knights, who have to genuinely fit the Paladin stereotype, or they couldn't become one in the first place.
Lesser undead and chaos literally shatter and crumble in the presence of a Grail Knight. I love them so much

I really love Bretonnia, honestly the Knights are just so classically cool.
Bizarrely GW's attempts to make them an asshole faction by constantly emphasizing how downtrodden the peasants are just sort of backfired for me. They went so over the top with the description of their miserable state that they ended up painting a picture of an impossible society that would collapse within a few years if it ran as described.
A system where everyone is starving to death all the time could never produce, well... anything, but much less longbowmen. The 9/10th tax rate is statistically impossible to survive on, and if most of people are inbred and nothing is being done to counteract this then all the peasants would be sterile in a few generations... but this has been this state of affairs for hundreds of years... uh huh.
Basically, the lore on peasants became so absurd that I just ignore it now, envision a realistic feudal society backing the Knights of Bretonnia, and carry on.
i think i know how it happened that it went so far:
GW Based Bretonnia on Arthurian Legends (lady of the lake, Green Knight etc.), Medieval England (longbowmen etc.) and Medieval France (knight stuff etc.)... so they more or less wanted to use it to cater to the english/british and French players with BRetonnia... and since GW themselves are english i guess there was a nice bit of national pride in it and therefore they transformed them into the "super good guys"
yet other nations with overall darker themes ended up being more popular (i think i've read that the Emperor originaly was a drunkard etc.). Stuff got revamped... Bretonnia might've ended up not as popular and good selling as expected.. and GW than went: "Ok what's missing is grimdarkness... throw a wagon load on it"... and completely overdid it...

mhm... saw that also in the (later) Gotrek and Felix Books and the Thanquol books... i see myself ever more often to bet, after more or less all Characters have been introduced, which of the newly introduced characters that are the "good guys" (for example most of the Castle Reiksguard Garrison in Zombieslayer) will survive... i normaly say: none... and i'm mostly right... it makes the books a tad boring if you know that the characters they cant kill of survive and the rest dies...
undertakernumberone1 What irritated me the most about Gotrek and Felix was that they couldn't seem to decide if they wanted Felix to be a badass or not. He starts out weak but not pathetic in Trollslayer, then steadily gets better and better until he's a bonafide hero in his own right in Deamonslayer and Beast Slayer, who can reliably kill Chaos Warriors 1v1 and ain't afraid of no bloodthirster. The dwarfs even tell him that he's an amazing fighter, with one Dwarf in Deamonslayer saying that he didn't know humans could become as strong as him. Very high words of praise from one of the elder races.
Then for no reason he starts backsliding towards mediocrity somewhere around Orcslayer. In Manslayer he is downright pathetic, struggling against common street thugs while Ulrika takes massive steaming crap after massive steaming crap all over him and his skills. Bear in mind at this point in the story this is a 45 year old man in the body of a 20 year old with more combat experience than most Dwarvish Greatbeards. He should be one of the best fighters in the Empire at this point, and hes helped kill a very powerful Vampire Lord, something Ulrika knows about, and yet she still talks to him like hes some kind weak scrub. It doesn't make any sense.
Clearly it was done because they wanted Gotrek to be the designated badass, but really you can do both. and all it really did was throw his character development out the window 😬.
It is a pity that they never went to Bretonnia.
It's telling that Orkslayer was the first book written by the second author of the series, while the original author stopped with the previous book.

Everything else aside, the more I watch this trailer the more I like it, the music combined with his speech.

I was not really that interested in Bretonnia before, (more of a vampire counts player) but right now this trailer really got me hyped up about playing the chivalrous knights of Bretonnia!

The trailer of TWW 3 is out, and it looks awesome ofc, with Kislev and the Chaos and so on... but I was instantly brought back here. This is so well done. A simple fellow human, armed with vows and fighting bravely evil foes way more powerful than him. And yet he CHARGES! Sums up 6th edition Bretonnia so well, at least the matches I played. I also kept the same vibe while playing the campaign in TWW. Hordes of knights charging. Never fleeing from battles even at the cost of certain death, because HONOR! The most memorable campaign I played in the series. I will never forget freeing the Empire, turned into a Chaos wasteland, and meeting the demons for a final epic charge.
3 will be my first total war game and I want the same with Bretonnia

It's a crime for a trailer to be this epic.
The bretonian code of a knight is very tough. Sure, most of the population are peasents and they are forced to serve and feed their lord (and his horse) and pay for his weapons and armor. On the other hand a bretonian knight is bound by code and honor to protect the peasents living on his land, even if this means to face an entire horde alone. Refusal to honor the code results in the loss of title, land and under certain circumstances even life. The empire has an army of thugs and mercenaries, the kingdom of Bretonia fights with knights and peasents. Can't wait to conquer all the realms of man with my crusader army :-D

What? That's wrong. She became the patron Goddess of Bretonnia in order to bring about a new breed of demi-gods, the Grail Knights, believing the greatest and most noble of human knights to be greater guardian spirits for her new realm than the Elves. Bretonnia was not a shield or cannon fodder for the elves, they were the foundation of a new realm made up of the spirits of the grail knights and damsels, protected against the evils of chaos.

Disparaging feudalism is one thing, and certainly valid, but they wrote their feudalism based on Arthurian legend, all of which is a story about the desire for moral purity. Oops.
